Welcome to the sisterhood.

You have focussed my mind with your love and your hate.

How bitterly disappointing Sad.

I wonder why she backtracked like that? She’s obviously an intelligent woman and knew what she was signing. Do you think it’s just because she’s worried it will affect her record sales? If so, that’s truly disgraceful.

TheMythicalChicken · 05/10/2018 08:28

It's plain as day she's been bullied and coerced.

Oh come on! I would have thought she had more balls than that. I feel like we deserve an explanation. The truth. But we won’t get it. I feel quite let down actually, on behalf of all women and girls.

Haworthia · 05/10/2018 08:28

I agree with you slightly Estellesylvia. It’s not the first time she’s redacted something she’s said with “silly me, but of course TWAW” and each time I’ve considered it cowardly, but I really don’t have the slightest clue about the sorts of harassment and outright threats she’s no doubt experienced. I think if I were in her shoes I’d backpedal too (see also: JKR).

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 05/10/2018 08:41

There have been lots of recent cases of harassment and doxxing of people less famous that Alison Moyet.

Putting your name on the line on this issue is an incredibly brave thing to do - and she has kids and grandchildren. To be honest, after seeing what Caroline Farrow has been putting up with this week, I'm keeping my head down and not coming out as full on AGPERF just yet (AGP rad fem. don't mind the trans folk, they probably need help accepting their bodies for what they are like anorexics do, rather than being turned into a life long patient. I mind the actual rapists who are using their fetish to access women's spaces and rape us with their penises)

heresyandwitchcraft · 05/10/2018 08:45

FWIW, I am really thankful for Alison having the courage to speak out like she did and sign that letter. I've got such love for her.
She strikes me as a sensitive, caring woman who really wants to do the right thing. I suspect she has gotten some terrible backlash. Personally, I am very glad she is taking some time off social media. That can only be good for her health. I hope she isn't feeling coerced or threatened. She should be allowed to share whatever she really thinks, including her most recent statement, even if I don't agree.
I think many gender-criticals and women will continue supporting her.
I find it scary sometimes even to post on Mumsnet. So her "coming out" as voicing even a few gender-critical concerns and calling for reasoned dialogue was amazing. Although I suspect there will be no "backpedaling" options available to her from the militant trans activist side. They won't accept any compromises.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 05/10/2018 08:50

She has been braver than me so I feel I can't criticise but I do wish she hadn't included that line about being put under pressure to sign something she didn't fully understand. That's basically thrown everyone else under the bus.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/10/2018 08:56

There have been lots of recent cases of harassment and doxxing of people less famous that Alison Moyet.

On another thread, Johnny Best has been sent a very threatening email.

Alison's statement rejects #nodebate and the part about children is good. On loos - well, I might say the same personally, I just know that many other women have good reason not to. Respect, dignity and rights for trans people - absolutely (not necessarily the 'rights' some demand).

'I take transwomen to be women' ... that's careful wording. It doesn't actually say TWAW. It's more, how she personally treats TW.

I hope it's enough for her to stay engaged on these issues and safe. I fear she'll be still get abuse from TRAs.Sad

Sarahconnor1 · 05/10/2018 09:01

Threats to jonny are awful and on his Twitter feed others have said they have recieved similar threats. If Alison has received similar in addition to the Twitter abuse I'm not surprised she has taken a step back.

I can't begin to imagine what level of harrassment and threats made such a rapid capitulation take place. She was so brave to stand up. I hope one day that she re-finds the courage that calls to courage and stands with her fellow feminists again.

In the meantime, I hope she takes care of herself and her soul until she finds that bravery again.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/10/2018 09:05

I would say 'silly Alison, she should have known to stay off Twitter for a bit after signing that letter' but the fact is we don't know what kind of threats she has been getting through other channels.
Given the email Johnny Best received, Posie's doxxing and Caroline Farrow's appalling phone harassment this week, it could be anything.

Popchyk · 05/10/2018 09:08

Yeah, she's been brave. Well done to her for even trying to have a conversation about it. So few have the courage to do that.

And they targeted her first because she's backtracked in the past.

I hope she gets her head together for a while.

AnyFucker · 05/10/2018 09:13

😨

Floisme · 05/10/2018 09:15

I have to admit I'm exasperated but, unless I have the nerve to sign that petition in my own name, then I don't think I have the right to say anything further. We couldn't ask for a better illustration of why we needed a petition in the first place

ToeToToe · 05/10/2018 09:41

God that threat to Jonny Sad

This movement is so terrifying - how can people like Stonewall, and our own MPS not see the chilling threats and abuse?

Popchyk · 05/10/2018 09:51

"This movement is so terrifying - how can people like Stonewall, and our own MPS not see the chilling threats and abuse?"

They do see it.

And they are fine with it.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/10/2018 09:58

The threat to Jonny- the government really need to step in now and actively support people being free to discuss transactivism and self id . This is all quite mad. I’m afraid to speak up on twitter or Facebook. I’m not afraid of disagreement or people not liking what I say, I’m afraid of real violence, particularly against my children. So many people are being terrorised into silence .
The totalitarianism of this is terrifying, and the implications of how easy it has been to silence dissent should worry everyone, whether they care about this issue or not.
I hadn’t heard about Caroline Farrow, can someone fill me in on what has happened ?

Sarahconnor1 · 05/10/2018 10:02

More threats

ToeToToe · 05/10/2018 10:02

This is just so sinister. It has never been clearer that this is an anti-women movement.

I wonder if Alison Moyet got stuff like this? Would explain that weird capitulating letter - which does (as a twitterer pointed out) sound like it was written at gunpoint.

numptynuts · 05/10/2018 10:03

Oh come on! I would have thought she had more balls than that. I feel like we deserve an explanation. The truth. But we won’t get it. I feel quite let down actually, on behalf of all women and girls.

Don't get me wrong I completely agree with you. She does have balls so what the hell happened?! The back pedalling is embarrassing for her, the backlash coning obvious, why would she do this? Makes no sense.

numptynuts · 05/10/2018 10:03

Coming not coning!

Sarahconnor1 · 05/10/2018 10:04

I agree but not just the gvt, all MPs need to speak out, if not on the trans issue then on the freedom of speech, freedom of assembly etc point.

LangCleg · 05/10/2018 10:07

The consultation, so far as I can see, is now completely compromised.

gendercritter · 05/10/2018 10:09

You know how if you're a human right's activist, banging a drum about a worthy cause which involves helping an oppressed and very vulnerable minority...... and you have to resort to threatening and terrifying other people to get them to accept what you're saying.

Yeah, that. Maybe your cause isn't so very noble afterall. Maybe the people you're supporting aren't so very fragile.

Maybe, actually, you're the bad guys.

FloraHiggins · 05/10/2018 10:45

Who cares about being homophobic or misogynistic? "Nonce" and "bitch" are fine but asking for debate is the most transphobic thing ever.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 05/10/2018 10:57

I have always used "nonce" to mean paedophile Shock Is that not what most people use it to mean??
