'Handmaidens'

I've seen this discussed before but what are thoughts on using the term 'handmaiden' to refer to non GC women?

Personally I'd like to see it join 'terf' on the banned list as I think it's equally as offensive but interested in the consensus.

OP posts:
placemats · 21/09/2018 19:00

no feminist has any intention of fucking women over.

Unless you're a T**F, a Witch or a BIGOT.

Which pretty much sums up all women according to the bible and cult that is MRA.

Handy tip. Most of the T**F's, Witches and BIGOT's I know are under the age of 35.

PeakedInThePeaks · 21/09/2018 21:29

Ffs. I ASKED if you were a man or a handmaiden because your views do not centre women. I did not call you a handmaiden. But if the cap fits....

FermatsTheorem says it perfectly.

And you never did answer the questions put to you on my thread Hmm

FloralBunting · 21/09/2018 21:30

Aaaand I rather suspect they're not going to either.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/09/2018 21:39

Thank you Datun.

PeakedInThePeaks · 21/09/2018 21:40

Im sat here quite amused that OP was offended enough to start a whole new thread about something I asked on my own thread because everyone got pissed off with the OP's lack of answers to questions on my own thread and the fact that OP does not have the rights of women front and centre.

Juells · 21/09/2018 23:05

OP does not have the rights of women front and centre.

They're not even on the horizon

Melanippe · 21/09/2018 23:31

Given that OP can't even define women except in a circular fashion, they can't possibly have women front and centre. They can move goalposts around like a champ though.

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2018 00:18

I hadn't realised that "having a friend" means "I agree with everything that they say and do". I thought we left that sort of thing behind in the playground

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2018 00:25

Believing that other women are free to hold their own opinions doesn't mean I have to respect those opinions at all. That's not how discourse works. We don't all state our opinions in a circle, nod and smile at each other and share some cake

Wait what?! I'm only here for the cake!

AspieAndProud · 22/09/2018 01:58

The difference between 'handmaiden' and the t-word is that you never see people proudly posting 'Die handmaiden scum' on Twitter.

You don't see people threatening to punch handmaidens and then calling the police on anyone who says they'll punch back.

You don't see public exhibitions of weapons used against handmaidens.

The t-word is backed up by threats and actual violence wielded by people capable of killing with their bare hands.

FermatsTheorem · 22/09/2018 04:40

Re. link above:

The Bolsolindas come across to me as prime examples of handmaidenry in action.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/09/2018 07:36

I'm a bit bored with this, so, for deepwater re climbing, have you heard of this young woman? I've seen a lot of climbers saying that if she's not the best in the world yet she soon will be.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/09/2018 07:42

(Different sort of climbing, I know, but still, a young woman doing amazing things, and thus vastly more relevant to the feminism boards than whatever this thread was meant to achieve.)

deepwatersolo · 22/09/2018 08:21

No, I had not heard about her, but she sounds amazing!!! And has the same hero as me, Lynn Hill Smile
Actually I do WAY more of the type of climbing Asha does (by FAR not as hard, though, there are worlds between us), because deep water soloing options are very, very limited for me. But it fascinates me so much, because you need no rope and still survive if you fall - into the water. Smile

deepwatersolo · 22/09/2018 08:32

Talking of climbing and lived feminism - look into Lynn Hill ( Angry, you may know this, but I‘ll say it for whoever reads this): Lynn Hill freed the Nose in Yosemite (climbing it all without technical aid) when all the Big Boys said, it cannot be done.

Iran has also some cool women climbers btw. Once read an article about them, and how they go to the mountains - harassing security checks no matter - to do their thing.

FermatsTheorem · 22/09/2018 09:37

Lynn Hill is awesome! One of my (many) climbing books has a length interview with her. One of my heroes.

Do you have any links to the articles on Iranian women climbers, Deepwater? (Or were they all in the print versions?) I'd love to read about them.

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/09/2018 11:18

This has nothing to do with anything but came up under rock climbing videos. JB is adorable.

BettyDuMonde · 22/09/2018 11:46

Oh god. That’s cute but the moving stuff around would drive me nuts!
We recently adopted an 18 month old failed racing greyhound who had never lived in a house or been called by a name and he is really similar to JB. Carries stuff all over the house, chews it, gets in an awful pickle (yesterday he chewed a brand new toothpaste, still the box. Took me ages to get it out of his fur).

I’m hoping the dog will grow out of it, but clearly JB won’t, it’s his thing!

FermatsTheorem · 22/09/2018 11:54

JB is adorable, but my goodness the damage to the house.

(I so want to stroke him though, he looks adorably fluffy).

PeakedInThePeaks · 22/09/2018 12:33

Beautiful derailment SmileI love climbing but haven't done any since my uni days.

deepwatersolo · 22/09/2018 15:07

Fermat, I tried to find the particular article, but could not find it. I very specifically remember a pic of a climbing woman with head scarf in cool scenery, and women describing how there are regular controls when going to the mountains by car, where they are reprimanded if the clothes/veil are off or if a man is with them, it is checked whether it is a relative. And that they (and I believe even some of the controllers) have come to see it as empty threat, a ritual... I must have read it maybe 10 years ago, no idea where.

But researching it, I have seen many rather recent articles, with women without veil climbing, and one very successful climber. I may post her interview later (I don‘t know how to do it by phone). It very much looks like these women have managed to conquer more freedom (and respect, as they are apparently successful in tournaments, too) in Iranian society. Smile

deepwatersolo · 22/09/2018 15:10

The beaver is adorable!!! ( but how on Earth is it listed under rock climbing?!?!)

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/09/2018 22:27

The beaver is adorable!!! ( but how on Earth is it listed under rock climbing?!?!)

It was just YouTube reccommending things to me. I searched for the climbers mentioned on this thread and underneath them was the list of videos I might like - cute furry animals and animal rescue stories with a happy ending feature a lot.

Bolloxio · 22/09/2018 23:17

But handmaiden applies to women who knowingly adopt views to the detriment of other women. The sort who, when someone discusses sexual violence as a phenomenon with a clear difference in prevalence of offender between the two sexes, says "but women do it too" as if the 98%/2% split did not matter, then (and this is the crucial bit) then uses that to argue that therefore sex segregated spaces don't matter. That's the point at which she's done something that borders on traitorous - by deliberately manipulating/distorting facts in order to push a political position which will place other women at risk.

Indeed.

I have nothing to add to this thread that has not been said 1000% better than I would have put it. Have not been around much this past week so no idea whats gone on here for this thread to be started, but it seems OP has a huge grudge because they have been called a handmaiden, whilst presumably, throwing women under the bus, as they appear to me to be quite...TRA like. Which automatically puts on opposed to womens rights.
