'Handmaidens'

I've seen this discussed before but what are thoughts on using the term 'handmaiden' to refer to non GC women?

Personally I'd like to see it join 'terf' on the banned list as I think it's equally as offensive but interested in the consensus.

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 21/09/2018 13:42

I can see your concern for other women radiating from every post.

Ereshkigal · 21/09/2018 13:43

Very good point hackmum.

As others have also said it is the anger of the oppressed class at other members who collaborate with the oppressor class to fuck over the rest of the oppressed class. It's not powerful, quite the reverse.

Ereshkigal · 21/09/2018 13:44

always will be.

Sure about that?

deepwatersolo · 21/09/2018 13:45

Try shouting out "handmaiden" and see how forceful that feels.

Astutely observed.

That is why the people who actually do all the shouting, do not shout 'you transexlusionary radical feminist!' but the acronym.

BettyDuMonde · 21/09/2018 13:47

Yes. Double hard consonant, single syllable words are the best purgatives to shout in the street.

I like ‘Cock’ personally, but I would only use it as a retort to a man harassing me. I never start those interactions.

BettyDuMonde · 21/09/2018 13:48

PERJORATIVE. Crikey, Betty. Drink more coffee.

VickyEadie · 21/09/2018 13:49

Dakinis

Oh, Huntley was part of the context. But here is what you said:

I know the prison system isn't perfect but sex offenders are never housed with women. That won't change with a GRA reform.

Which evidence in the public domain proves to be a false assertion.

I won't "change the record" because you're the one playing games with truth.

BertrandRussell · 21/09/2018 13:50

It all comes back to the bizarre idea that being gender critical means you cannot also be friends with transpeople- and actually, you must hate them.

CottonTailRabbit · 21/09/2018 13:50

I have been shouted at rather a lot in the street. More when younger. Almost always by men. None of it was feminist-theory based. None.

LangCleg · 21/09/2018 13:50

I think purgative is a bloody brilliant typo!

I still think, rather than increasing Orwellian lists of banned words, we should just liberate TERF and TIM and cis. But y'know. I wasn't part of the useless wokeazoid campaign to ban them from FWR in the first bloody place.

Dakinis · 21/09/2018 13:51

BettyDuMonde thanks for sharing you find cock to be the best purgative. Slightly TMI!

OP posts:
deepwatersolo · 21/09/2018 13:51

you correct your spelling errors on this board, Betty? that's bragging. Wink

('cause only people who hardly ever misspell can afford to do it).

UpstartCrow · 21/09/2018 13:56

It all comes back to the bizarre idea that being gender critical means you cannot also be friends with transpeople- and actually, you must hate them.

It feels very similar to the claim that to be a feminist you must also hate men.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/09/2018 13:57

I wasn't asking you that question Lass

What ? What question? I quoted a couple of posts by posters and commented on them. Am I supposed to say "this is replying to..."

Again you take what I write out of context. It almost feels like you are doing this on purpose and making it personal

I disagree with a post and that makes it personal? All I said was it was a false analogy.

If you feel it's a false analogy, expand upon the reason why you think it is so. It's not difficult

The Handmaid's Tale is a work of fiction referring to a very particular dystopian, fictitious future. Why would anyone want to ban the use of the book title? What point would there be?

In any case (a) it isn't even the same word and (b) the point of "handmaiden" is to denigrate women who are considered to be willingly complicit with "the patriarchy" - which the handmaids are not.

OppressionOlympics · 21/09/2018 13:58

Things I’ve seen written precisely nowhere
Punch a handmaiden, handmaiden Nazi scum, die in a fire handmaiden scum, I want to go and fuck up some handmaidens...

Dakinis · 21/09/2018 14:02

I consider 'punch a terf' and 'you're a pathetic handmaiden' to be on an equal par.

Saying that I would assume both people were too think to formulate a coherent argument.

OP posts:
FermatsTheorem · 21/09/2018 14:05

You'd really think they were on a par?

Threatening actual, real world physical violence (as opposed to "literal" misgendering violence) - and remember some of these people have carried through on those threats - T. Wolf, the bomb threat to the women's meeting.

Versus

Calling someone "pathetic" (which is the insult of choice of 10 to 12 year olds, and any sane adult being confronted with a child whinging about being on the receiving end of said insult would presumably be better placed to teach them some resilience).

Dakinis · 21/09/2018 14:05

Is OppressionOlympics a man? Or just a handmaiden?

OP posts:
Dakinis · 21/09/2018 14:05

That is the context it is used on here...

OP posts:
CottonTailRabbit · 21/09/2018 14:06

You think threats of violence are equivalent to slightly mean words like pathetic?

Are you actually serious? How does your logic work on that?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/09/2018 14:06

hoo boy

yeah, let's ban more words

'cos that's going really well

and isn't pointless and stupid at all

Dakinis · 21/09/2018 14:08

FermatsTheorem 'terf' is an arbitrary group of people.

The handmaiden accusations are personal to a single poster.

OP posts:
Pandamodium · 21/09/2018 14:08

"The posters who are happy to use it... would you be happy for a teenage girl walking down the street with a transgender friend to be called a handmaiden?"

This wouldn't happen though.

It's not GC feminists attacking and/or shouting abuse in the streets to people with a differentiating viewpoint.

LangCleg · 21/09/2018 14:09

Well, that didn't take long, did it? Less than a dozen posts from more more more, I want more words banned in case uppity women use them to this is because words are literal violence, exactly the same as punching someone.

Colour me shocked.

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 21/09/2018 14:09

More on the qualities of the word handmaiden and it's lack of plosives.

The foot - one accented followed by two un-stressed syllables actually has a calming quality that reminds me of patting down a bedsheet after tucking the corners in. It is perfect for a woman auto pilot carrying out her handmaiden of the Patriarchy duties.
