He got 15 years. Is it enough?

What I find interesting is that he got 15 years for paying a17yo boy for sex

Anyone think that would have happened if it had been a girl?

I'm going with not in a million years.

CrackpotsArePots · 18/09/2018 22:02

It's funny really.

MIdgebabe · 18/09/2018 22:02

No one here ever said all trans people are peodophiles though.

We already know a large proportion of men do bad things. Some are really nice people who really try to help people, like priests

FermatsTheorem · 18/09/2018 22:03

In answer to your question, OP, in my opinion, not a long enough sentence. There is a lot of evidence to suggest paedophiles have the worst recidivism rates of any criminal and are pretty much incurable, so I'm of the "lock 'em up and throw away the key" school of thought. The aim should be to warehouse them safely and securely where they can do no further damage, ever.

However, this is entirely unconnected to his stance on the bathroom bill.

DonnaBe · 18/09/2018 22:03

Surprised to see the OP here - they've just been in the Guardian comments moaning about FWR for standing up for the rights of women

Actually that wasn’t me. I’ve an evil twin sister who pretends she’s me sometimes.

I’ll have a word next time I see her!

ABit

A just gag a bit at how sweet some of them are. The phone conversation with Dan's daughter at the end was cute. Constance. Lovely name

NothingOnTellyAgain · 18/09/2018 22:04

I'm surprised but pleased he got any punishment at all.

Don't think he would have in UK.

Not sure what the point of this thread is? Loads of men are interested in sex with underage girls and to a lesser extent boys. This is hardly news to feminists!

DonnaBe · 18/09/2018 22:06

FermatsTheorem
The warehousing idea seems sensible.
I must admit my first thought was that they hand out the death penalty like sweets over there so why not for this guy?

I’m against the death penalty by the way.

I read a horrible article on the BBC news app today about a paedophile's abuse in a seafarers children's home. And yes he was a minister of the church. Horrific. They are everywhere and there needs to be good safeguarding against these predators with penii. In every position of power or authority.

No one here ever said all trans people are peodophiles though.

Really? I think you’re wrong......

Or maybe not ALL trans people are paedophiles.

OP posts:
NothingOnTellyAgain · 18/09/2018 22:09

Because he's not a black man?

Is the reason I'd offer.

CrackpotsArePots · 18/09/2018 22:10

Hilariously transparent attempt to glean screenshots for Twitter

NothingOnTellyAgain · 18/09/2018 22:11

Well transmen are highly unlikely to be paedophiles for a start.

Im not sure what you're getting at though

CrackpotsArePots · 18/09/2018 22:12

Nothing

Excellent point

DonnaBe · 18/09/2018 22:12

ABitCrapper

Yes. Positions of trust. I think it’s the DBS system that’s meant to stop that happening in the U.K. all it seems to do is catch people with previous convictions.

Any ideas how we could reform the check system to protect children?

This is the go to manual on predators. I recommend it as a grim but necessary read.
The conclusion is that predators are mostly male, and tend to look for positions of power in institutions with weak safeguarding

Thank you for this Upstart. It made me think for a moment of pheasant shooting....

Birds specailly chosen and bred to be stupid and docile and easy to kill.

There is nothing noble or hardworking or respectful about a human male hunter/predator; they want the easiest most efficient route to maximising their sick pleasures. They don't see this as lazy and unsporting. They see it as expedient. An all you can eat buffet. Fantastic.

And this is the attitude we see in trans males in women's sports I think.

Bull fighting, fox hunting, child abuse and trafficking, males in women's prisons. The easier the better.

Utterly depraved.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2018 22:14

I was interested in the sentence he got. It seems a bit lenient to me.

Some sort of plea bargain. I wouldn't disagree, but then if you compare it with e.g. the sentences some of the Rochdale groomers got, which (without knowing all the details) seems to include even worse systematic abuse of younger children ... https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/men-rochdale-grooming-tariq-jail-13035428

Thread title is goady. CBA to report.

ABitCrapper · 18/09/2018 22:15

Yes. Monitor their internet use and porn use. Violent porn or child sex abuse related content should be flagged up and position of trust taken away. And monitoring of usage might stop them taking up the position in the first place.

screenshots for twitter

Not at all. I certainly won’t be tweeting any of this. Unless someone comes up with a brilliant idea to help protect children from this sort of evil man. I’d publicise that.

OP posts:
donquixotedelamancha · 18/09/2018 22:16

Why is that relevant? This senator committed an awful series of crimes.
It isn't. Unfortunately predatory scumbags can be anyone. There is no correlation between political views and being a paedophile.

Is 15 years enough?

No details in the article, so who knows? Good that it's a long sentence.

Does his position make the crime even more odious? Position of trust etc
Yes. Hopefully that's reflected in the sentence. This underlines the need for robust safeguarding procedures.

One of the most effective tools in the safeguarding arsenal is single sex spaces. Since this is a topic which interests you there are a number of safeguarding threads on this particular forum, particularly those focused on protecting single sex spaces. You might want to join in and help out with some of the campaigns.

CrackpotsArePots · 18/09/2018 22:16

Males, in positions of power with weak safeguarding, you say?

Where have I heard that before?

UpstartCrow · 18/09/2018 22:18

Any ideas how we could reform the check system to protect children?

There are already several threads about safeguarding, start with those.

DonnaBe · 18/09/2018 22:18

pheasnt shooting

I totally agree. Pheasants aren’t the smartest of birds. And so pretty.

Shooting them Is horrible.
