If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

Usual ASA excuse is we ran the Ad past our mainly white man panel and they said we can’t legislate for what ladies find in bad taste, sorry.

But I have just checked the current panel and they look much more representative than previous incarnations. So it may be taken seriously.

One panel member interestingly is a member of the Board of the General Dental Council and is Chair of its Remuneration Committee. Could go either way - ie he knows enough about Dentistry to see how this is the worst dental ad on the history of advertising OR he is in a dental bro network with Head Dental Advisory Bro of Brushbox who is ‘the principal and owner of one of South Wales most respected dental practices’.

Grin

Can't believe that weasly apology. Or the utter lack of brainpower that led to that stupid image in the first place. Bloody hell.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 21:55

What was the gov one about?!

It was along the lines of "don't drink too much ladz, you'll fuck a moose (the actual word) and regret it in the morning"

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/09/2018 21:57

sophocles

Ive been waiting ages for the science smack down

Honestly....ages

cinammonrollsnotgenderroles · 20/09/2018 21:57

I've just written to dig in and complained. Ffs. I thought we'd left stuff like that behind in the 70s. I feel sorry for both the male and female students being peddled this shit and who might worry that this is the norm they have to live up to. For this trash puts pressure on all of them. My heart weeps for them. I'm so glad I'm not 20 now.

RichardLongcross · 20/09/2018 21:58

That's top bantz right there Eresh, don't know what you're being so uptight about.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 22:00

While obviously the one directed at women was "don't drink too much or you'll get raped".

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/09/2018 22:01

Oh dear

This is wrong right?
IAmLurkacus · 20/09/2018 22:03

I think the government could utilise this in an anti drugs campaign. ‘Don’t snort coke while you’re working or you too may have a ‘brushbox’ idea’

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 22:04

Oh dear

You can't argue with stupid. It's my twitter maxim.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 22:07

Like OP I fear her legal career will be short lived if she thinks all you need to do to win an argument is state your opinion.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 22:09

Plus the LITERAL VIOLENCE of her mis-generationing many people on the thread!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/09/2018 22:12

oh dear

I went on mumsnet

Told them what i thought and ive now won all the arguments ...all the arguments there are , and all the arguments there will be

I rebutted the arguments...by refusing to post (cos mumsnet is really very scary)

If i were following ruth on twitter id be fairly pissed off that i read the entire thread to see her take down...and then not see any take down

They must be so disappointed

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/09/2018 22:14

I had to skim read a 75 page legal document on here the other day cos a poster had misunderstood a section

The poster was lovely to be fair...but it was a complete waste of my time

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 22:14

It was along the lines of "don't drink too much ladz, you'll fuck a moose (the actual word) and regret it in the morning"

We need a "resigned" emoji.

Quite ageist I thought. Should she not know age is a protected characteristic? She’s just committed a hate crime against hundreds of posters. Shall we call South Yorks police?

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 22:16

Told them what i thought and ive now won all the arguments ...all the arguments there are , and all the arguments there will be

It worked for trump to be fare. If she also happens to be a reality star and millionaire she might be alright.

SophoclesTheFox · 20/09/2018 22:22

They’re always ragingly fucking ageist and completely oblivious to it, aren’t they?

And frequently sexist and disablist, too.

And they think that mumsnet is full of silly old mumsy types who just don’t understand anything about the world Grin bless your wee cotton socks, Ruth. One day you too will be old and clueless like us and you will cringe yourself inside out, my love.

SunsetBeetch · 20/09/2018 22:52

So this went viral. This right here. This is the power of Mumsnet. It's why TRAs are so desperate to shut us down. Any advertisers being hassled by TRAs would do well to consider the reach Mumsnet users have and what they can achieve when they feel passionately about something.

Movablefeast · 20/09/2018 22:55

SunsetBeach I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Movablefeast · 20/09/2018 23:00

Ruth is drinking the misogyny cool-aid and thinks she is somehow different from the women on this thread and mumsnet.

Elephantinacravat · 20/09/2018 23:01

Poor Ruth. I can remember some of my own views back when I was a late teen/early twenties. How naive I was! I'm sure I would have been a real woke TRA handmaiden as well.

Luckily for me there was no social media and so it wasn't out there in the ether for all eternity. I'm sure Ruth will look back on her twitter in 10 or 20 years time and cringe very very hard.

BiologyMatters · 20/09/2018 23:11

Why are people still giving the tra airtime? This was a very valuable thread til they turned up and lots of people started engaging with them. Now half the posts for the last 10 pages are completely irrelevant to the Brushbox thing.

BabyTeeth · 20/09/2018 23:18

Bustle.
Whoever they are:
www.bustle.com/p/a-colleges-welcome-box-included-promotional-material-that-some-are-calling-sexist-11990399

What do they mean ‘some’ call sexist?

Change that to ‘most’ at once Bustle. Haven’t you seen our Great British Independent Survey?
Which inching over more towards the mumsnetter view as we speak?

This is wrong right?
