This is wrong right?

If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

I'm hoping it will make Marketing Week!

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 20:42

Agree Charlie. What does it even mean?

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 20:48

From buzzfeed

NeckBeard:
Does anybody know if male students also got this box? The article doesn't mention it.

Womanbeingmansplainedto:
Who cares? It's in all-around bad taste no matter who you give it to.

Neckbeard:
Sinead Buckley It's kinda important when it's being labelled as 'sexist.' The alternitive is that the people complaining are sex-negative and slut-shaming.

For the record, I don't think women are sluts, Neckbeard. I do think you're a fucking idiot though. Sex positive means women wanting to have sex when they want it, not when they feel forced by external pressure from their university that they spent £9,000 to attend. It also doesn't mean that all women want to suck cock all day. Ooh how heteronormitive of you.

Also only 3 people have done it.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 21:05

I want Neckbeard™ to explain if it is more or less sexist if men also got it, and the way he came to that conclusion.

Last comment on the Buzzfeed post - hire more female creatives.
This would work, so why don’t they?

Oh I know, because then another pillar of the patriarchy will crash to the ground and the ad bros aren’t having that.

stillathing · 20/09/2018 21:12

I thought slut shaming was trying to make a woman feel bad for having sex /wanting to have sex? What's that got to do with sexist marketing?

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 21:15

I feel a bit stupid that - due to a lack of experience - I just thought that would be toothpaste mixed with spit. Disgusting looking but normal. But ... somehow the article linked in disturbs me. On the one hand the user wants to fight sexism, on the other the user seems openly transphobic against a trans FEMALE. Should only cis ladies be protected? He/She wants to raise awareness for women’s problems in real life and takes away people’s rights to BE a woman? Sad. Especially when that hurts the cause, as those ads ARE sexist.

Another clever poster, referring to this thread. I don't want to take away the right to be a woman. No one has a right to it. You either are one or you aren't.

No. Just put them on your social media team and let them clean you mess. Because you're basically a drunken monkey throwing your own poop.

God knows, maybe that woman really enjoys expressing her sexuality through explicit beer mats.

Is that sarcasm

Its just that im multitasking and may have missed something

disorganisedXX · 20/09/2018 21:21

the right to be a woman. No one has a right to it. You either are one or you aren't.

Indeed in spades. This is about women. This is a female abuse issue and any men trying to co opt it into something else are clearly not getting the message.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 21:26

"clever" was sarcastic yes! I wanted to explain he was talking about this thread as he calls it an "article" which to most Buzzfeed/Gawkermedia readers this may well seem to be. Thought that might confuse people. There aren't any gender critical article also being written about the story, though the link is attached to one Twitter who is being used in some of the stories.

Anyone done an ASA complaint yet?
It might - just might - be worth it this time as they have finally added ‘gender’ as a category that they can assess an ad on.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 21:29

I did one

OP posts:
Elephantinacravat · 20/09/2018 21:29

The alternitive is that the people complaining are sex-negative and slut-shaming.

I was wondering when the 'don't be sex negative now will you' brigade would come out of the woodwork...

Also hilarious is the idea that being a woman or a man is a right? What the fuck? You either are, or you aren't? Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

BabyTeeth · 20/09/2018 21:30

Me too

Movablefeast · 20/09/2018 21:30

This as is just a classic example of misogyny and how men and women think differently, to men it’s just amusing and funny and if women have a problem it’s because we must be repressed or someone is “slut-shaming” us. It is just incredible that in the 21st century so many ad agencies can be so absolutely clueless as to call this thing a “good idea”, manufacture it and distribute it.

BiologyMatters · 20/09/2018 21:31

How fucking disappointing that a thread about sexism (against women!!!) has been very effectively derailed by a TRA. Not everything has to be all about trans issues all the fucking time!

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 21:31

The Otley Run is a famous university pub crawl in Leeds.

BabyTeeth · 20/09/2018 21:32

I mean me too I did an ASA thing not I agree to the sex negative rights stuff.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 21:33

The stupid hurts.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 21:35

I reported quite a similarly sexist lairy ad to the ASA once. It was a government one! They informed me and my friend who also reported it that other people had also done so but they weren't going to do anything because reasons. I can't even remember the lame excuse.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 21:38

What was the gov one about?!

I'm sorry but I like to think I'm quite an intelligent woman but I have no idea WTF that means.
