The term "men in dresses"

Trans-excluders like to say that they're absolutely fine with boys who don't fit in with gender stereotypes. And I, not one of you, am fine with children not fitting gender stereotypes. But I don't think that is true of all of you. Why is "man in a dress" used as an insult by so many of you?

Stunning in the traditional sense

The only time I can think of that "man in a dress" would edge towards being offensive, is when the "dress" is in fact another non-bifurcated garment that has its own name. (Eg the thawb)

And then it's cultural ignorance and at worst racism, rather than twansphobia

womanintrousers · 12/09/2018 10:34

The Rock is technically wearing a skirt in this clip, not a dress but no one seems to mind a bit. 1 min in...

BettyDuMonde · 12/09/2018 10:35

I realise that some people do indeed ‘slay’ in a sartorial sense, but is that really under the umbrella of literal violence now?

I can’t keep up with these rule changes.

HotRocker · 12/09/2018 10:38

I would posit that wearing dresses, or women’s clothing in general is the only outlet available for men to express femininity. There is no other socially recognisable way to express femininity other than outward presentation. Being a woman isn’t a thing you do, it’s a thing you are, and people of both sexes can be similar in personality or very different, and anything in between, of course the whole thing falls down because a dress does not a woman make, and in any given room full of women who are free to choose their attire, very few will be wearing dresses at any one time. As usual the idea that a man wearing a dress = Woman comes from a male centric idea of gendered dress code. They seem to have not noticed, or don’t care, that while a room full of men will probably not contain anyone wearing a dress, the same applies to women. Sometimes I wonder whether men ever notice who women are at all.

Bit of classic Vivienne Westwood- she’s been doing skirts for men since I were a nipper...

(Can we get the collective ‘mumsnet handbag’ upgraded from SF’s nasty tote to something classic from Great Auntie Vivi, please?)

I really resent having my post deleted because I asked someone wtf they were thinking putting honey on an avocado. I engaged in the OP debate but come on, you have to reply to the avocado stuff, you can’t let that slide.

Man in a dress isnt an insult anymore than man in a suit is.

Loads of men seem to like to wear these stereotypical feminine clothes. Its pretty common. Its not a problem in my opinion. Completely seperate to what sex they are

BettyDuMonde · 12/09/2018 10:41

Marc Jacob’s panto pirate shoes are a step too far.
🤢

Worse than honey in an avocado, I reckon.

I just can't get on board with the suit jacket with kilt look. The jacket completely overpowers the kilt and the length is all wrong, but I can't see how making it shorter would be an improvement either. Much prefer the look of the jumper (incl. where it cuts off) in Betty's Vivienne Westwood look. Can Scottish men not just wear very nice jumpers with their kilts, or something?

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 12/09/2018 10:42

One more man in a dress for the collection: Mick Jagger

Full on Monica from Friends ~1995.

Am I the only person who thinks all the men in the pictures look a bit silly?

Obviously I will defend almost to the death their right to wear dresses. But....... honestly? People really think Bowie looks better in a dress than a suit?

Datun · 12/09/2018 10:43

Where is the OP?

Because I don't think their opening gambit

"Trans-excluders like to say that they're absolutely fine with boys who don't fit in with gender stereotypes...But I don't think that is true of all of you."

Isn't really holding up.

GulagMilkMonitor · 12/09/2018 10:44

Some transactivists are furious when men wear dresses but say they're not trans.

Apparently it interferes with their uniform and the signal that they are women.

FFS? This is maddening.

DixieFlatline · 12/09/2018 10:44

I thought the Bowie dress was a bad choice in terms of length, too. I'd advise a woman of the same stature not to wear that + those boots.

Bigmamma5764 · 12/09/2018 10:44

can i speak to the man in charge plz (silly woman)

BettyDuMonde · 12/09/2018 10:45

I’ve got a massive to do list today but I am really looking forward to the possibility of a nice long GNC men thread on my return.

Can we add some chaps in eyeliner?

Datun · 12/09/2018 10:45

Bert

I've just spent quite few minutes admiring Jaden Smith in his skirts. Honestly, looks good.

Bigmamma5764 · 12/09/2018 10:46

bet your kid has problems

Flatpackjackie · 12/09/2018 10:46

Why has so much on this thread been deleted? I can't follow it at all!

Fairenuff · 12/09/2018 10:46

HQ should not have deleted the breakfast posts. OP starts a goady thread using the term trans excluders and immediately abandons it.

Posters should therefore be allowed to discuss whatever they like as long as it doesn't breach guidelines until OP deigns to return. IMO.

I do love a menswear catwalk show.
