BBC article: 'Transgender inmate admits Wakefield jail sex offences'
"A transgender prisoner has admitted sexually assaulting inmates at a women's jail.

Karen White, 51, who was born male but now identifies as a woman, has pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual touching at New Hall Prison, Wakefield.

The offences took place between September and November last year. She has since been moved to a male prison.

Details emerged when White appeared at Leeds Crown Court to admit to a rape committed before she was jailed.

She previously admitted two further rape charges, which also happened outside prison.

White will be sentenced for all offences on 11 October."

Not sure I'm going to be calling him Karen either. Rapist scum.

James Kirkup: Why was a transgender rapist put in a women's prison

If you were deciding where to house a convicted sex offender accused of repeatedly raping a woman, where’s the last place on earth you would put that person? How about a building full of vulnerable women, many of whom had previously suffered sexual assault and abuse? A building locked and secured so that those women could not get out and could not get away from that convicted sex offender?

James has previously asked us not to copy the full text - he needs the clicks. Maybe report and ask mnhq to edit?

GirlScout72 · 07/09/2018 12:01

Ah sorry, OK will do.

MonotonousSeagull · 07/09/2018 12:02

Listen to me, all ‘James’, like we're mates. 😂

GirlScout72 · 07/09/2018 12:06

He's about the only 'mate' with any serious influence in the corridors of power we've got. I've actually subscribed to the Speccy just for him, I reckon he should be able to say to his bosses, look, see? sales.

Popchyk · 07/09/2018 12:09

Great article again by James.

arranfan · 07/09/2018 12:20

To this day I am shocked that BBC Reality Check did that. However, given there are fact-checking conferences, I'd really like to know if this is an issue they're discussing? If not internationally, at least at a national level with their C4 colleagues, Full Fact etc.

How do you fact-check and provide objective summaries when there is a political zeitgeist or climate of fear like this that makes reporting facts next door to a thought crime?

VickyEadie · 07/09/2018 12:29

Excellent piece. Have we had any word from Madigan yet? Or is Lily still peddling the 'I'm just a young student, me, stop asking me about stuff I'm supposed to comment on" line?

Popchyk · 07/09/2018 12:36

Transgender Assessment Boards are only available in male prisons and they are set up to assess the risk of moving existing male prisoners to women's prisons.

KW bypassed all that by never being put in a male prison for these current offences. KW was transferred directly from court on remand to a women's prison.

That's what I'm guessing has happened. Could be wrong of course.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/09/2018 12:47

Madigan's Twitter feed is surely just one long whine for compliments, validation or sympathy (and money) interspersed with witless comments about being "cute" and legally illiterate ones (like how trans people can't get married without self id - um, what?).

So short answer, Vicky, when I tried to wade through it earlier obviously LM hadn't retracted / apologised. I may have missed it as I could feel my brain cells shrivelling.

I did notice - concerningly but off-topic (sorry) - Madigan set up a thread for young trans people to ask for money for surgery especially if they were estranged from parents. I wanted to weep as a string of healthy teenagers popped up to beg for funds for damaging drugs and surgery. Is this really what a women's officer should do?

Back on topic - another great article.

Popchyk · 07/09/2018 12:54

Gosh, what could possibly go wrong with vulnerable teenagers asking for money online from what we know is going to be older men?

I wonder what the motivation of these older men could be?

I'm sure these older men wouldn't want anything in return though. Of course not.

GirlScout72 · 07/09/2018 12:54

Popchyk

No, you are exactly right, that is precisely what happened.

BettyDuMonde · 07/09/2018 13:05

James K is definitely on a whole heap of women’s Xmas card lists this year.

Metaphorical ones, obviously. Who has time for writing Xmas cards while the patriarchy needs smashing?

BettyDuMonde · 07/09/2018 13:08

This will be a test case, no doubt. Heating set for ‘late september’

He certainly is. Love you, James. You’re a diamond.

WarmWishes · 07/09/2018 13:14

No comment from Madigan on the White rapes as yet. Madigan has instead tweeted her intention to upload shots of her growing breasts to Instagram once Madigan commences hrt.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/09/2018 13:42

Popchyk I know! I'm sure they'll just be generous philanthropic grandfather types. I actually feel sick that someone who is supposed to represent women would do this (along with breast thing - that's so weird). Also that no-one in the local labour group has asked what the merry hell LM thinks they're playing at.

Betty, I suppose - trying to be charitable - cases like this are why the MoJ may feel they are between a rock and a hard place. I don't know this persons background but I suppose it all argues for better individual assessment and proper psychological evaluation of anyone before undergoing a course of hormones and surgery which would be considered in this assessment. Which all comes back to the importance of medical gatekeeping.

Popchyk · 07/09/2018 13:49

Sun link

"To be legally recognised as a transgender woman, a person must have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and lived as a woman for two years.

Friends said White was never diagnosed. They claim she was a drag artist in Manchester not transgender.

She has an ex wife and a son, it is said. About four years ago she moved to Hebden Bridge, West Yorks.

She received help from a transgender support group in Manchester and was referred to a gender identity clinic in Sheffield.

But she failed to attend three appointments. White, now at Armley men’s jail, will be sentenced at Leeds crown court on October 11."

OlennasWimple · 07/09/2018 14:51

The fact that this rapist was put in a women's prison with either no risk assessment or a patently flawed risk assessment shows the problem with an assumption that a transwoman would be placed in a female prison.

If the starting point was that a transwoman would be held in the male estate, with a discussion on individual circumstances about whether special facilities were appropriate (including in the female estate), then this situation would never have arisen because the burden would have been to demonstrate that he wasn't a danger to other prisoners and clearly that would have been impossible

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/09/2018 14:51

Sorry, just read my last - in hurry - and should have been clearer in second para that I was talking about Hudson!

MoJ are clearly feeling heat in the case of Tara Hudson in Betty's link who didn't have GRC but had started on hormones and surgery and was placed in a man's prison. Threats from individuals like this of legal action and the "public outcry" and petition mentioned may have put pressure on them to be more accommodating.

From that article, it appears the sentence wasn't long and due to a head-butt in a bar. There may be more to this person which means that they shouldn't have been housed in a women's prison, but article seems sympathetic to their PoV so not sure.

Karen White should never have been anywhere near women and I don't think there is any real excuse but I wondered whether a panic over threatened legal cases caused them overreact on subsequent cases.

The whole thing is a mess:
Hudson has boobs and some glam photos, so the public got worked up about someone that feminine looking being placed with dangerous lags. But the fact is that neither Hudson nor White had a GRC so how are we supposed to differentiate? And the answer isn't to let anyone who wants one get it because they'd both have had one in that case.

Which was supposed to come back to my point about how it highlights the importance of proper psychological evaluation.

'I’m literally a young person about to start university. Stop holding me to weird standard

I know this was from a few pages ago and the discussion has moved on but what on earth is this supposed to mean? What difference does it make that Lily is a) young and b) about to start university? What sort of weird standard does Lily imagine they are being held to?

And I am so unbelievably effing angry about this story. It should be on the front page of every newspaper. The Guardian hasn't even reported it.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/09/2018 14:52

Oh, and I ready hope Hudson's case fails or we are back at transwomen being in women's estate based solely on say-so

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 07/09/2018 15:05

Hackmum

The weird thing about the standard Lily is being held to is that there doesn't seem to be one!

Any other person this age who wanted to hold a post like this would be expected to actually do something - and a young woman most of all. Lily just moans about meanies and gets fawning photo shoots about young activists while the brain dead followers tell Lily that they're an inspiration etc.

There are so many young people working on really worthwhile causes - physically and mentally - and not making a song and dance. The weird standard is that Lily gets more adulation than a doctor working in a war zone, a first responder after a terror attack or one of the marines who rescued the boys trapped in that cave just for suggesting they will flash hormone enhanced breasts on Twitter.

So actually, yes, really weird. Only not how Lily thinks.
