Reading Pride

Looks like I'm going with my 15yo and her friends to Pride tomorrow. They are naive rainbow-swallowing trans-allies, and I am a gender-critical liberal (small-L). I am not going to spoil their fun or embarrass dd, I am simply there as their discreet chaperone.

But...

Should I, still discreet, do something...more?

Suggestions...?

Stickers inside the portaloos? Or wind out the loo roll in the loo a bit, write WOMEN DON'T HAVE PENISES in marker or biro on some of the sheets, then wind the loo paper back up again. You'll be well away by the time it's discovered.

Or you could write WOMEN DON'T HAVE PENISES on the back of a £5 or £10 note with a marker and then use it (QE2 face up) to pay for drinks or whatever. But as someone will doubtless pop up to tell you, you could be fined £200 for doing this — if you're caught.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 31/08/2018 12:48

Seriously? I wouldn't go. At 15 they are old enough to go by themselves. I'd tell them to watch the behaviours of various people and use their critical thinking skills to draw their own conclusions.

I was a regular marcher at Pride but not any more. When the G start supporting the L I may change my mind.

JellySlice · 31/08/2018 12:52

Grin Like the loo roll idea!

beenandgone, I know my child and her friends. They are vulnerable.

I don’t think stickering that event is a good look. It will look like harassment, and the point of the campaign is to draw the attention of oblivious members of the public to what is happening.

JellySlice · 31/08/2018 12:55

On second thoughts, I don't like the loo roll idea. Rather than give someone second thoughts, I suspect it will give some people great pleasure to wipe their bums with that statement.

How about "Lesbians are female homosexuals"?

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 31/08/2018 12:58

You can wrap leaflets in the loo roll and stick them inside the door. You can get rolls of 200 glue dots from the pound shop, and you dont need a whole one for a sticker.

WarmWishes · 31/08/2018 12:58

I wouldn't do it either. It's not the time or place. It was different for get the L out because they are lesbians and it is appropriate in a LGBT event but assuming you are straight then no.

Forgotthebins · 31/08/2018 13:24

I wouldn't do protesting stuff myself as it's not my parade, but I'd gen up on my facts so if someone says Stonewall was started by trans people I'd say "but Storme DeLarverie was a lesbian", and stuff like that.

jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 13:45

Why don't you have a racist protest at black pride while you're at it?

Or you could have a rant at wheelchair users at disability pride?

FFS let them have their day.

Gronky · 31/08/2018 13:50

Why don't you have a racist protest at black pride while you're at it?

Do you really equate this with racism?

jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 13:57

Gronky yes I do. If I was trans I would find the stickers or any other 'statement' very hostile and upsetting.

Take one of these banners or stay away OP.

Upset? Now you know how lesbians feel when they are told they have to sleep with people who have a penis.
T is not a sexual orientation, L is.

JellySlice · 31/08/2018 14:05

Oh, is Lesbians are female homosexuals upsetting you, jasminmaya?

I see that as supportive, as standing squarely behind LGB+

OP posts:
jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 14:06

Save it for your rad fem WPUK meetings it has no place at Pride.

NameChangedAgain18 · 31/08/2018 14:12

Take one of these banners or stay away OP.

Why would the OP take one of those banners? She’s not said that she’s a lesbian. So (assuming she isn’t)* she has no right to speak for lesbians and to tell them that they should accept male lesbians. I’m not sure why you’d presume she might?

*If you’re a lesbian, OP, I apologise for my assumption!

jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 14:13

Zoom in on the smaller banner behind. Assume the OP is a feminist if not a lesbian.

seafret · 31/08/2018 14:19

I think I would defintely go so you can see exactly what is going on and check the atmosphere etc. A lot of these youngsters are well meaning lovely kids but just don't see what older adults do.

NameChangedAgain18 · 31/08/2018 14:30

Zoom in on the smaller banner behind. Assume the OP is a feminist if not a lesbian

But then, again, she would be telling certain lesbians that they aren’t proper feminists. That’s surely not appropriate at such an event?

LadybirdsAreBirds · 31/08/2018 14:32

Women'S OPINIONS have no place at Pride. You heard it here

LadybirdsAreBirds · 31/08/2018 14:36

I'd go. I'd want to see if any male compere was making 'jokes' about dragging lesbians off by their saggy tits (Manchester Pride, anyone?)

jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 14:36

A lot of these youngsters are well meaning lovely kids but just don't see what older adults do.

Like these older adults that go around putting transphobic stickers up in the portaloos and writing transphobic messages on bank notes and loo rolls.

These well meaning young kids are out having fun with their well meaning friends at a well meaning event. It shouldn't be too much to ask for the adult chaperoning them to have well meaning intentions too. Or simply not to behave like a spiteful idiot.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 31/08/2018 14:37

women don't have penises = transphobic. I see. Interesting stance

UpstartCrow · 31/08/2018 14:38

I stand with my lesbian sisters.

jasminemaya · 31/08/2018 14:40

Me too UpstartCrow - regardless of their biology.
