Social Media Attacks on WPUK
womansplaceuk.org/social-media-attacks-on-wpuk/

"It is now clear somebody created a fake FB account using a photograph of a woman without her permission and made posts implying she was a ticketholder to our #WPUK event in Brighton. After the event they posted, as if from her, that she had spat at a protestor and thought it was funny. This post was screenshotted and posted on Twitter.

This was then used to attack Woman’s Place UK by impugning the attendees at Monday’s meeting and promote lies about us and our supporters. The account has been reported and removed but, as we know, a lie is often half way round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

These are not the first such social media attacks we have been subjected to. We have had a fake twitter account set up in imitation. Our meeting hashtag #WPUK is now routinely hijacked by people posting sexual innuendo. Our posts have been routinely, and dishonestly, reported, hidden and obstructed.

We are not interested in a petty social media battle with people who oppose our aims. We are a campaign established to ensure that women’s voices and women’s rights are upheld in any proposed changes to a law that affects them.

This morning, our supporters are reporting that FB posts which link to our website are being removed. The reason give is that ‘they may be in breach of community standards’. They are not in breach of community standards. We would urge you to visit our website, read the posts and decide for yourself.

We have five demands. If you agree with these demands we would ask you to stand with us now and share our various posts far and wide to expose the spiteful attempt to shut us down instead of engage with our substantive demands.

We refuse to be side tracked by the vindictiveness of such campaigns. We are interested in a resolution that upholds the rights of everyone. We are not afraid of debate. We welcome it.

We call on our detractors to cease these attacks and to engage with us in serious discussion.

We are asking you to share this statement on all your social media platforms with all your followers and friends."

I tried to share it on fb, first time it said error, second time I was told it didn't meet community standards.

I'm very cross.

IJustHadToNameChange · 20/07/2018 11:02

Yup.

Facebook has blocked all links to the A Woman's Place website.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 20/07/2018 11:04
Shock
dinodora · 20/07/2018 11:05

WTAF?

VaggieMight · 20/07/2018 11:05

This reply has been withdrawn

This has been withdrawn by MNHQ at poster's request.

AornisHades · 20/07/2018 11:06

That's outrageous Shock

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 20/07/2018 11:07

Pressed post too soon.

The actions of Facebook and Twitter lead me to the inescapable conclusion that they are guilty of structural misogyny. How can Martha Lane Fox be happy to be associated with these campaigns to silence women?

hungryhippie · 20/07/2018 11:08

What an absolute joke!
It was only in the news today that Zuckerberg isn't removing Holocaust denial accounts from Facebook because "censorship".
Not even like you can complain to Facebook directly as there is no way to contact them.

LangCleg · 20/07/2018 11:13

This is getting out of hand.

dinodora · 20/07/2018 11:14

No I tried to complain. Couldn't. I tried to edit the share to give more info. I couldn't.

Wanderabout · 20/07/2018 11:19

Twitter are still banning people for stating facts. This is even more concerning now as this is part of an open legal consultation.

A user was banned from twitter for simply stating that transwomen are men with gender dysphoria.

This is the previous report on the twitter issues:

Wanderabout · 20/07/2018 11:20

This is political censorship of women discussing their legal rights.

dinodora · 20/07/2018 11:21

Ok you can share the same statement that's on their fb page from the page (if that makes sense).

gendercritter · 20/07/2018 11:24

Tgis is ridiculous and very worrying. All of FPFW's materials are fair and tolerant and rational.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 20/07/2018 11:24

Lots of people dont seem to want any debate

God forbid that people should be allowed to discuss anything that may affect them

It was all 'this wont affect anyone you are making a fuss' to 'shut down discussions' very quickly

A bit like on here really although I appreciate the pressure MNHQ is under must make things very difficult

Areas to meet being closed off, discussion on social media being closed off

Its a concern if you are in anyway in favour of even a small degree of free speech

If you dont find it concerning? You will eventually

Wanderabout · 20/07/2018 11:27

It is telling this happened the day after a proper open debate on mainstream TV

dinodora · 20/07/2018 11:28

I've been v bust this week; what happened on tv?

IJustHadToNameChange · 20/07/2018 11:31

TRAs have been piling on all the pages I follow.

Most of them have 'back up' pages in case the 'main' one is deleted.

Sky News did a feature and were relatively balanced.

This.

This is absolutely appalling. I reported a picture apparently showing two young children who had been murdered, and likewise this was held not to violate standards.

What WPUK are asking for is a debate on something which is currently the subject of a governmental consultation. That this can be suppressed by major media outlets in this way should frighten those way beyond the group of people concerned about this particular topic.

I am used to feeling angry and horrified, but the behaviour of certain agencies or their associates to whine we should at least be able to look with trust in their impartiality is something else.
