Social Media Attacks on WPUK
womansplaceuk.org/social-media-attacks-on-wpuk/

"It is now clear somebody created a fake FB account using a photograph of a woman without her permission and made posts implying she was a ticketholder to our #WPUK event in Brighton. After the event they posted, as if from her, that she had spat at a protestor and thought it was funny. This post was screenshotted and posted on Twitter.

This was then used to attack Woman’s Place UK by impugning the attendees at Monday’s meeting and promote lies about us and our supporters. The account has been reported and removed but, as we know, a lie is often half way round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

These are not the first such social media attacks we have been subjected to. We have had a fake twitter account set up in imitation. Our meeting hashtag #WPUK is now routinely hijacked by people posting sexual innuendo. Our posts have been routinely, and dishonestly, reported, hidden and obstructed.

We are not interested in a petty social media battle with people who oppose our aims. We are a campaign established to ensure that women’s voices and women’s rights are upheld in any proposed changes to a law that affects them.

This morning, our supporters are reporting that FB posts which link to our website are being removed. The reason give is that ‘they may be in breach of community standards’. They are not in breach of community standards. We would urge you to visit our website, read the posts and decide for yourself.

We have five demands. If you agree with these demands we would ask you to stand with us now and share our various posts far and wide to expose the spiteful attempt to shut us down instead of engage with our substantive demands.

We refuse to be side tracked by the vindictiveness of such campaigns. We are interested in a resolution that upholds the rights of everyone. We are not afraid of debate. We welcome it.

We call on our detractors to cease these attacks and to engage with us in serious discussion.

We are asking you to share this statement on all your social media platforms with all your followers and friends."

Appalling underhand tactics. People see through it though and see who they show themselves to be.

bigoldscaredycat · 20/07/2018 11:43

What these stupid men and their idiot handmaidens DO NOT UNDERSTAND is that every time they pull something like this - getting an event shut down, bomb threats, a social media page banned, a user banned from Twitter - they just CREATE MORE SUPPORTERS!

They are NEVER going to shut us up. Men have been trying to shut women up since forever. It won’t work.

Wanderabout · 20/07/2018 11:50

What WPUK are asking for is a debate on something which is currently the subject of a governmental consultation. That this can be suppressed by major media outlets in this way should frighten those way beyond the group of people concerned about this particular topic.

So this

dragongirlx · 20/07/2018 11:54

If you are on Facebook you can give feedback to say that they do not breach guidelines and links need to be reinstated. If you go to the 3 horizontal lines at the right side of the screen and scroll to the bottom click on report a problem and general feedback then fill the form (this is on the app).
Hopefully if Facebook get enough feedback they will reinstate

LangCleg · 20/07/2018 11:56

It's an outrage.

And it's going to make me redouble my efforts to persuade people that it is worth them completing the consultation and that their voice will count. You'd be surprised how energised people become when they are told to try to share something that they have been hitherto not bothered about one way or the other and are told by Facebook that they are not allowed.

OvaHere · 20/07/2018 11:58

Dr Adrian Harrop has publicly apologised for his part in smearing two people who's ID's were stolen and used to make fake allegations against WPUK.

Facebook has blocked all links to the A Woman's Place website.

This is Outrageous. I wonder if James Kirkup(?) would cover this?

2rebecca · 20/07/2018 12:12

In the long term this will work against the TRAs as it damages their "poor most oppressed of all flowers" narrative. Women don't try and shut down TRA meetings or websites or physically assault them. All the actual real aggression and oppression is one way.

ChattyLion · 20/07/2018 12:18

I was wondering if this media suppression of women’s voices in comments below the line on online newspaper articles, (looking at you, the Guardian) and Facebook’s suppression of linking to WPUK, and this Facebook-hosted social media fakery (which then gets passed on as fact) ..

And the media’s distortion of the reporting of crimes against women by men who identify as female where they describe the perp as also being female, and not because there is any knowledge of a GRC around that- see Jean hatchet’s change.org campaign..

.. I was wondering if this could all come under the scope of the Culture media and sport committee’s ongoing inquiry into fake news?:

www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/digital-culture-media-and-sport-committee/inquiries/parliament-2017/fake-news-17-19/

Might be worth asking them if they could take evidence in it? You can submit as an individual and WPUK and other orgs could do that too.

Given this is all rather suspiciously timed at a time when there is a government consultation open about the GRA.. feels almost as if some people wanted to stop debate? To use fakery to change opinions? To stop the use of social media by certain groups and try to censor the voices of women? While allowing despicable sexism, misogyny, racism and child abuse content to stand on social media platforms.

But you know, shut up women because, #thatneverhappens

Fienda · 20/07/2018 12:25

It should frighten anyone that the owners of social media networks can decide a topic shouldn't be discussed at all, and clamp down on it.

Ifonlyus · 20/07/2018 12:27

Yes to this

Pacers · 20/07/2018 12:28

I appreciate that this is a different context to the election funding rules which have seen Leave UK being reprimanded this week, but I don’t think it’s too far a reach to look at the manipulation of media narratives in the context of a live democratic process ChattyLion

Ereshkigal · 20/07/2018 12:34

This, with bells on. Tell everyone you know what they do.

LapdanceShoeshine · 20/07/2018 12:34

I’m puzzled that FB is blocking links to the WPUK website but leaving their FB page up - relieved of course, but it makes no sense

ChattyLion · 20/07/2018 12:38

Pacers I agree. The timing seems particularly sinister.

AnchorMum · 20/07/2018 12:46

Facebook has blocked all links to the A Woman's Place website.

Another day another outrage.

This continuing campaign of censorship against women's views and opinions has to be exposed by the mainstream press, and by all right thinking individuals who have a public voice.

Seriously, women are not going to stand for this much longer.

Wanderabout · 20/07/2018 12:52

I wonder if it is TRAs with inside knowledge of Facebook censorship policies gaming the system.

Pratchet · 20/07/2018 12:59

This is an outrage in plain sight, and nobody is reporting it.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 20/07/2018 13:13

I thought something was going on as the trolling has quietened off on here the last day or so - very reminiscent of the tech abuse most DV victims suffer from these days - these lowlife criminals obviously have something to hide apart from their disordered minds.

LapdanceShoeshine · 20/07/2018 13:22

When you get this page you can report it by clicking on the 3 bars at top R & then scrolling right down.

It’s actually for reporting technical problems but I can’t see how else to complain Hmm

Cooroo · 20/07/2018 13:30

I copied and pasted the post, explaining why I was sharing it. A woman (American) I've known online for more than 20 years just posted:

#WPUK#UKIP#BRITAINFIRST#MAGA#BATHROOMBILL#PEASINAPOD

I hate this. I've explained, been conciliatory, been reasonable and she fucking accuses me of being in Britain First. She is not a fool. How have we come to this?

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 20/07/2018 13:34

I think it just let me share to my timeline...

EvilEdna1 · 20/07/2018 14:29

I have met the woman whose photo was used in that ID theft in progressional capacity, a few times. I am shocked. She is such a kind and gentle person. I can't think of a person less likely to spot on anyone.... especially damaging given her job.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/07/2018 14:32

The hatred just drips out of these deluded people.
