Fair Play For Women wants your ideas for GRA campaign materials

Hi everyone,
We are busy preparing guidance to help you understand the impact of GRA changes on women's rights. We are also raising funds for campaign materials (just 4 days to go!). We are making campaign films to get the message out but will also be using funds to make campaign materials for people to do their own campaigning. We want to inspire and support you, a grassroots army of women, to get the message out. So please give us your ideas on this thread about what materials would help you.

(I can' give post the link to the fund raiser because it breaks Mumsnet rules. But you can find more information about who we are on our website home page).

Yes Helmet, I was trying to explain to my 75 yr old father and he said "of course this is what happened with homosexuals 50 odd years ago"

He didn't seem to get it...

Helmetbymidnight · 15/07/2018 21:15

It’s complicated for sure.

ChattyLion · 16/07/2018 06:29

Thank you FPFW what a great job you are doing.

Conscious of how much our threads are watched but...

As with anything important to segment the audience as to the issues that they are interested in.

Re formats pls use videos too that can be shared. Young people especially expect these in any kind of campaign.

I also think in these videos we need gender critical identifiable relatable actual spokespeople.
I know that’s hard to do and women are risking a lot speaking out but Man Fridayers and PeachYogurt on YouTube are doing a fucking great job so far. Magdalen Berns’ videos.

A talking heads interview with Linda Bellos, about being interviewed by the police, Anne Ruyzlo about being hounded out of her Labour position and Helen steel’s experiences as a veteran campaigner all being violently threatened or harassed simply for having opinions and a vagina at the same time: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3076773-Helen-Steels-statement-about-being-assaulted-on-Saturday

I’d suggest something factual collecting up links about the violent misogynistic authoritarianism side of it. Links to media reports in credible broadcasters and papers. Don’t just take our word for it, type of thing- this has all been covered in major newspapers and is in no way fake news

Videos covering Maria Mac, speakers corners, TRAs and handmaidens chanting burn it down etc, judge forcing Maria to use pronouns, kill TERFs and those websites. Bristol and other events with screaming picketers. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3228462-To-be-shocked-that-this-is-happening-in-Britain-in-2018

I’d suggest that we need to have a new petition to link to, because there isn’t a topical call to action to offer at the moment- the Parliamentary petition is awesome but less immediate now that there actually IS a consultation going on. I’d suggest something about the violent and threatening and sexist abuse that women (‘TERFs!’) get thrown at them online for being gender critical and how this needs to be dealt with by the social media platforms, whereas the language and tone of gender critical woman themselves is constantly policed :

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3198232-Can-we-have-a-thread-where-we-collect-all-social-media-threats-against-rad-fems

I’m sure a lot of people could add their own things that they have been called in the comments bit of the petition and it would be really powerful.

ChattyLion · 16/07/2018 06:48

Some of the key themes that resonate with people have been discussed here:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3252492-what-will-it-really-take-the-peak-trans-the-world

Something is needed to appeal to young women and men who are heavily socialised to be nice and think they are woke and who think objecting to gender stereotypes and sexist aggression is all about hate..

Maybe think up a series of short slogans which start:

‘It’s not hateful to ask that .. ‘
‘it’s not transphobia to ask that.. ‘

Eg It is not transphobic to be concerned about the rights of girls and women.

It is misogynistic and authoritarian (and untrue!) to try to silence those concerns about girls and women’s privacy, dignity and safety, by calling anyone who voices concerns ‘transphobic’.

Maybe some kind of consistent call to action at the end of the various info sheets and messages would be good:

Women have rights. Don’t see them rolled back. (Find out more, Sign the petition at FPFW site link)

TheBiologicalWoman · 16/07/2018 07:39

Chatty Lion - links to all the damning unbiased posts and media coverage would be great.

The bias of mainstream media is shocking and this manipulates the truth. If the repeated coverage was in one place it would be clear to see that the media is setting a one sided agenda that wages war on women.

TheBiologicalWoman · 16/07/2018 07:40

And before anyone asks me how I know that, I need those darn links to evidence! If they were archived we'd see a sinister pattern. Yes you BBC, Guardian , Pink News!

StayOutOfTheForrest · 16/07/2018 08:15

I think that you have to be very very simple for a poster that the general public will see as most have no idea what is happening.
Off the top of my head;

“There is a new law being debated designed to help protect trans people. However, the law will have the unintended consequence of stopping women have access to single sex facilities.

This could mean:
A man can enter and use a female changing room
Men will be allowed in domestic violence and rape crisis centres
Parents will not be informed if their children have to share toilets / sleeping areas/ changing facilities with people of the opposite sex.
Boys will be able to compete against girls in all sport, including athletics and football.

Women who oppose these changes have been threatened and physically assaulted by a small group of activists who claim that anyone who objects to the new law is a bigot.

This is not the case. We are Mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, and wives.
We care deeply about the wellbeing of all in our society. Everyone should be free to love and live as they wish!

But we cannot stand aside and let a tiny number of individuals take away women’s hard won protections.
We want to be able to change without men being present.
We want to be able to ask for a female health professional.
We want our daughters to grow up knowing the joys of female only groups and spaces.

If you want to keep women only spaces and services go to ........ or contact .......

Bingpot · 16/07/2018 10:24

I definitely agree with PP that an informative video would be really helpful.

Particularly some sort of graphic one that could clearly refute each of the TRA arguments and put forward the gender critical stance in response to it.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 16/07/2018 11:49

I think we need different approaches and different messages targeting different groups of the population.

My mum and her friends quickly understood the concerns about self-ID once they became aware of it. They grew up in an age before many of the women's rights we took take for granted today. And, having been around the block a few times, their views weren't clouded by idealism.

However, for that group the biggest issue could be making them aware. Often they aren't active on SM, don't go out to clubs or the sort of places they might see (and take notice of) stickers and posters (of course, I recognise that NAOPALT - not all older people are like that - and some will have a more active social life than I do).

loveyouradvice · 16/07/2018 12:43

Suggestions: Make sure it has a clear call to action Make sure it says where to go for further info Make sure it shows clearly why this will impact women

Agree with stickers. Short, snappy. funny would be great. and call to action.

Agree with both of above - the important thing is to know what you want people to do having read it..... do you just want them to think about it or take action?

AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get some copywriters involved - FairPlay is a brilliant organisation but with a tendency to be too wordy, thinking that you need to give everyone the full story.... rather than enable them to EASILY understand what is going on and why it should matter to them... at the moment too much of your information is a bit "worthy" (and this is speaking as someone who adores and applauds what you are doing and has contributed three times so far)

Successul ad campaigns are short and snappy! And that's what we need....

This may be too much... but a sticker saying
"Do you want a penis in here? If not, go to...."
would certainly attract people's attention and enable them to understand what is going on...

Talking about same-sex spaces is boring and people have to think too much about what you're saying... you need to be reaching people who HAVEN'T thought about the issues and whose automatic reaction is to think not relevant to me/I can't do anything to make a difference....

GOOD LUCK and you are brilliant to be doing what you are doing! Looking forward to using your materials....

loveyouradvice · 16/07/2018 12:49

I love something along these lines... you need to shock people into action before it is too late....

AND WOW do we need to get some good tweets out there which may be VERY difficult....

And is there any chance of getting a major (soft) campaign going with one of the newspapers - e.g. Daily Mail... meeting editorial team and talking through issues, helping them get what they need to run series of articles around different aspects and why it is important to fill in the consultation.... as well as interviewing their readers about what they think...

*What about a picture of the hairy handed trucker Dave?

Full beard, looking very stereotypically male. Maybe a camera and even some porn mags visible. Looking lika a creepy voyeur.

‚‘this is Dave

If self ID goes ahead the way the government wants

He will be allowed to call himself a woman. No surgery, he won’t even have to shave that beard.

And then he can come into your hospital ward, your changing room, your smear test, your mums nursing home room, and daughters guide pack sleepover.

And YOU will be prosecuted for questioning this

Protect women AND Transwomen

Say NO TO SELF ID.‘*

loveyouradvice · 16/07/2018 13:02

a variety of info and materials... but also a catchy slogan which can unite us like Stonewall have... Their "Get over it" campaign has been very successful....

Perhaps included something along these lines as others have highlighted... for the "right on" brigade (i.e. me before I peaked!) not the general population ...This isn't right but think something short focussed on this might be helpful

Most transgender "women" keep their male genitalia... It is NOT transphobic to say you want single SEX spaces

TeenTimesTwo · 16/07/2018 13:06

Some simple stuff aimed at men too.
Even if via the women in their life.

Turph · 16/07/2018 14:02

Ex-lurker. Idea: four pictures, Ian Huntley, Danielle Muscato, Jeremiah Byrne and Miranda Yardley. Title: "odd one out".
Each picture to be captioned with a fact or quote. Text at bottom: "only Miranda is opposed to men taking over women's spaces. What does this mean for you and your family? Contact xxxxxxxxxx"

RabbitsAreTasty · 16/07/2018 14:25

I'd like to see material that shows up the transactivism for the homophobic misogynistic regressive nastiness that it is. Woke people need to be backing away from it like it were eugenics.

Don't force us to call Dave a woman just because he likes wearing dresses. Let trans be trans.

Let Mary turn her back on high heels and makeup without people telling her she must be a man. Let trans be trans.

Birth certificates and sports peak trans people fast. Memes are needed.

It is a social media age. Memes like those showing the girls who have just been beaten in the race, men winning women's prizes, basketball, Alex Riley clips etc. These are needed to help the woke realise they've been tricked.

The woke need a new idea to cling to so they feel virtuous again, hence needing something that separates being trans from actually being a man or a woman.

Like when a man says he is a woman because he is trans then this is a sign that society has fucked over that man, we should be ashamed of ourselves and we should help him to live his life as a man who presents as a woman without being horrible to him but without going along with the lie that he is a woman.

Surely we have some awesome MNers who know how to get that kind of message across?

honestmushroom · 16/07/2018 14:34

Catchy slogans are all very well but I think it would be really important to get some solid legal advice. At the moment, it's not clear to me whether reforms to the GRA mean watering down the Equalities Act re exclusions. This leaflet suggests yes: sages.org.uk/publications/sages-factsheet.html

It's a tricky one, and you will want to anticipate push-back, so whatever you do, use focus groups to test your publicity material.

I've been unaware of this whole debate until very recently and to my mind, the scientific studies with actual figures (disproportionately high numbers of female children referred to gender identity services; the figures suggesting male patters of offending are the same for biological men, whether identifying as women or men [not intending to offend anyone here, just trying to be accurate]; what it actually means to be 'trans' under the 'trans umbrella') are the most convincing.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 16/07/2018 14:43

This is the very, very rough draft a guy in the pub and I drew up the other day (he peak transed a lot of people who had no idea that any of this was happening with the things we drafted). He wanted to get it made into posters.

COULD YOU BE BREAKING THE LAW?
DID YOU KNOW?
In Canada it is considered a hate crime to say that a man with a functioning penis is not a woman.

DID YOU KNOW?
Men who merely put on a dress or say they are women (80% of transwomen - a man who says he is a woman - retain their penis) are taking women’s spaces on female sports teams and using female spaces like rape crisis centres, loos, hospital wards, school changing rooms and the Brownies etc.

DID YOU KNOW?
Men with a penis are now calling themselves lesbians and insisting any lesbian with a vagina who doesn’t want to sleep with them is prejudiced.

THIS IS HAPPENING NOW
Powerful lobby groups want the law to change in the U.K. too. Soon it will be illegal for you to challenge ANY man who is in the ladies loos.

The law WILL change unless we contact our MPs and tell them why this is a bad idea.

Or follow @“

UglyCathKidstonBag · 16/07/2018 14:47

Oh and the majority of people in the pub think a transwoman is a woman who wants to be a man.

Wanderabout · 16/07/2018 15:03

Stayout that's great wording

anotherpersona · 16/07/2018 15:29

I like the idea that someone else started a couple of days ago

A ladybird is not a bird
Transwomen are not women - % still have full male genitalia

Dave the trucker is a strong image and you could do images of him in all the different settings eg in guide tent, Youth Hostel bunk room, hospital ward.

Furx · 16/07/2018 17:52

Yes, the whole point about Dave the Trucker is that he is NOT what anyone woUld think of as a transwoman.

One of the oppositions strawmen is that feminists think all trans are perverts.

Dave should be used to hammer home the message that we don’t think that for a second. Trans people are almost certainly all lovely and fluffy and misunderstood.

But if the law changes then Dave WILL pretend to be trans exploit that to his advantage. Which will ultimately create a backlash against that lovely transwoman you know.

TransplantsArePlants · 19/07/2018 17:33

I have put this on another thread, but I think the single thing most significant people don't know is that most transwomen have a penis

So a sticker with that (quoting the figures) would be my suggestion.

TheBiologicalWoman · 19/07/2018 17:36

I didn't realise that either before I became more familiar with this.
I didn't know why c** was used either and why so many found it offensive.

TransplantsArePlants · 19/07/2018 17:41

Sorry. I was so excited, I posted this before I RTFT Blush

Great ideas everyone!

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 19/07/2018 19:49
