See, now, I think it is racist to outright refuse to consider a woman of colour as a partner, if you're a lesbian. Because women of colour are a subset of women.

It's different from butch/femme to me. Butch is about how you present yourself to a degree. Being a woman of colour is immutable. Like being a woman is immutable.

I just can't imagine saying 'ok only white women for me' - I'd find it bizarre. A woman of colour might be tall or short. She might be curvy or slim. She might be a feminist or not. She might be left-wing. She's not somehow on the 'undatable' list because of her melanin quotient.

I hear what you're saying Linning and this may be me being pedantic, but I'm not hearing you say that lesbians can refuse to date every transwoman on the planet, on the basis that lesbianism is same sex attraction.

This might not be what you are doing, but I have heard too many mealy mouthed people say that refusing sex with someone is fine, but the implication is that it's on an individual basis.

That's not what lesbianism is. It's discriminating against men and transwomen on the basis that they are a different sex.

This is the problem with claiming that men can be women. It fucks over every single sexual orientation, including heterosexuality.

Trans women are women. Trans women who are only attracted to other women are lesbians. Lesbians who sleep with trans women are still lesbians.

A lesbian is a female homosexual. Lesbians collectively make up a class of human beings defined by their sexual orientation. It has nothing to do with identity.

Everybody, everywhere, every time, can refuse sex with anyone they like. This is called consent. This is called preference. This is an individual thing and it is fine. But it has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Sexual orientation = preference.

If you are not a female human being whose sexual orientation is exclusive to other female human beings, you are not a lesbian. You can't appropriate a sexual orientation as an identity.

I think a lot of lesbians who don't see an issue with this are lesbians who are comfortable with a feminine identity.
I am a feminist. I see femininity as part of our oppression as women. It's important for me to live a life adopting as little of that as possible - just what's needed for me to survive.
If someone tells me my being a lesbian means I'm a feminine human who likes other feminine humans, I feel like this describes David Bowie more accurately than it describes me.
