Who is standing up for women and girls?

So far, it looks like some brave individuals, various religious organisations and the newly formed Womans Place, Transgender Trend and FairPlay for women

Where are all the established women's charities, especially those with a strong history of campaigning? Someone to answer Stonewall and others powerfully?

What is the Fawcett Society doing?

Who else is there?

Do you have any info on religious organisations who are standing up for women's rights?

loveyouradvice · 25/06/2018 23:33

Not specifically - just reading about the upcoming Scottish court case ... and knowing that the Muslim community in Glamorgan stood together... and believe I have heard glimmers of others, but my memory is sadly not good

This post relies on 3 fallacies:

  1. That transwomen are not women.
  2. That giving rights to transwomen means removing rights from non-trans women.
  3. That transpeople are the only threat to women's rights.

So to answer it accurately I would say Stonewall, GIRES, Mermaids and the Fawcett Society.

But if you want some transphobes, then the Daily Mail, the Christian Institute, the Times and Norman Tebbit.

This post relies on 3 fallacies:

One day there will be a post on here that isnt immediately leapt on to 'put the stupid woman who posted it right'.

We all know what a woman is and it is not a man.

Support should be sport.

Branleuse · 26/06/2018 08:11

Transwomen are transwomen and have full human rights, which is as it should be.
Some "rights" to enter females segregated spaces, is at direct odds with the whole concept of female only spaces, so yes it does impact, and its a big threat to the concept of male free spaces at all if we cant even bloody name a male as a male

HowWasLastnight · 26/06/2018 08:11

Not many are standing up for us. Has anyone asked organisations why they are not? Is it because they say TWAW?

What's with all the thread derailing? Is this a new tactic?

Serfisafleur · 26/06/2018 08:12

I know what you're saying, none of the expected women's orgs are standing up for women including the WEP.

I don't want to bite I really don't but
SarahAr can't seem to understand that when you blur the boundaries so that you can't even define what a woman is, then there's no such thing as woman and therefore no such thing as women's rights.

They've been around long enough but somehow can't seem to grasp this. Anyway... moving on.

LemonJello · 26/06/2018 08:13

Anybody who can’t acknowledge that trans women are not women is incapable of standing up for the sex-based rights and protections of women and girls.

There are more and more grassroots organisations springing up all the time OP and the base for the more established groups continues to grow exponentially. These organisations don’t depend on public funding to pay their salaries so are free to do the work that is necessary. Most campaign groups start small and grow. We’re in a great position Smile

Branleuse · 26/06/2018 08:33

Not many are sticking up for female people.

I dont see HOW you can centre women, if your definition of women basically means anyone

SarahAr 'Transphobes?' Even you must realise what a completely meaningless word that now is. Do you know what a phobia is? How can The Daily Mail or The Times have a phobia? They are inanimate objects. Are you Norman Tebbit's therapist? Or do you just class anyone who supports women and girls as having a mental health condition?

enoughisenoughtoday · 26/06/2018 08:41

This gives an affirming reminder of the many individual women and groups currently standing up for women. It doesn't answer the question of why other groups have so far failed to do so - but that will change as the negative impact of the #nodebate, threats, violence , bullying and intimidation hits home - which is already happening!

Yes - that video really does.

We already know our mediating class has been infected with the pomo virus. There is no point expecting any of the corporate third sector - including its feminist groups - to stand up for women until this neoliberal, individualist ideology has lost currency.

We'll just have to make do with the grassroots groups still in touch with material reality. That's ok. We'll win - not least because you can't theorise material reality out of existence.

Branleuse · 26/06/2018 09:05

Surely we can still talk about it here somewhat?

WeAreGerbil · 26/06/2018 09:13

The "mainstream" women's groups are struggling for funding already with cuts to public service budgets and more pressure on trusts and foundations, they're worried about the impact on their funding.

BettyDuMonde · 26/06/2018 09:19

Have the Soroptimists taken a position? Their wording is still very much ‘women and girls’ but I can imagine that clarifying that further would be difficult to do without attracting criticism for being anti trans.

Absolutely agree.

^1) That transwomen are not women.
2) That giving rights to transwomen means removing rights from non-trans women.^
3) That transpeople are the only threat to women's rights.

Wow two non fallacious true statements and a straw man!
