What if we fail?

I find myself worrying about where we will be 2, 5, 10, 20 years from now if we fail to stop the tide that, just now, with the GRA reforms, threatens to redefine the meaning of the word woman, erase lesbians and damage a generation of children.

I'm not saying we should give up: anything but. In fact, I think it might be an important motivating factor to consider what else might happen if our MPs continue to enshrine lies into laws.

What will come next?

Actually, all she needs to do is wait 3 or 4 years. Right now trans IDs are apparently popular in schools. Whether they transition or not, we are going to have a big influx of trans-positive voters who want to increase protections, not decrease them. Come the next General Election a lot of first-time voters are going to be looking for a party with a trans-positive manifesto and voting record. And I bet the big parties realise that.

ShotsFired · 06/06/2018 09:39

Unfortunately young people don't vote half as much as older people do, so that theory may be a few years later in coming than you'd like. And given most people tend to become more conservative (minded, not party in this context) all those young liberal dreams may not be quite so powerful.

ScarletBegonias · 06/06/2018 09:52

What's written on birth certificates against the 'Sex' heading seems to have changed at some point. They certainly said Girl or Boy up until at least the 1960s; but by the late 1970s it had moved to Male and Female.

Pratchet · 06/06/2018 09:53

wow - shameless

Pythagonal · 06/06/2018 10:07

Sorry, I know I shouldn't give this poster any more attention but this really did make me laugh:

If you fail there's always the contingency plan (bake cookies for the kids) then clean the toilet, then tidy up after your husbands and maybe wash the car and walk the dog

Today I'm baking biscuits for the dog, and walking him. Then I'll be digging out a new border in the garden, and patching the lawn with the turf I'm removing. The rest of the jobs mentioned above? Those are DP's jobs, not mine!

LangCleg · 06/06/2018 10:09

And in 5-10 years time, when the lawsuits against blockers used for precocious puberty are joined by those where they were used for trans identities, and the lawsuits against Androgel by men are being joined by those with desisted trans identities, and the Guides are having an inquiry because of teen pregnancies and STDs occurring via mixed sex accommodation, and the Education Department has lost ministers because safeguarding was dropped and abuse rocketed....

... all those young people will be saying THIS HAPPENED TO MY FRIEND.

The tsunami building will be like all the other child abuse scandals that have gone before. And nobody will be admitting that they ever spoke in support of it.

It would just be better if TPTB would listen to feminists telling them the bloody obvious before children are harmed, not after.

I can't see many of the Tory or centrist floating voters being happy with the NHS funding cosmetic surgery mental health support with the suicidal feelings yes, and if MH support can ease the narcissism.

Sarah Vine wants a referendum on the NHS.

I don't see people being happy about this level of NHS funds being spent on cosmetic surgery, where as I can see people being more keen on therapy to help with suicidal feelings.

Pratchet · 06/06/2018 10:28

Where do people get the money for this stuff?
That's a transgender man

I don't know when it changed. So far as I am aware, there was no particular trans input which led to a change.

Why is Vancouver Rape Centre odious?

I see others also cringed at the 'girl on my birth certificate. :)

LaSqrrl · 06/06/2018 12:20

oh bugger me and the open-ended punctuation. Missing tail bracket, missing single quote...

See what happens when I get all worked up about female erasure? Broken punctuation. Luckily I am not a dude, otherwise it would have resulted in mass slaughter.

Wakame · 06/06/2018 14:26

"The comment "I have 'girl' on my birth certificate" made me cringe and wince. The word is female."

Whilst I agree that "female" would be the better word, I can assure you that the word on my birth certificate is "girl". Now, obviously, I'm not going to post my birth certificate here to prove it, but I can at least point you to some examples with "girl" (or indeed "boy") on the internet. I am including long form and short form certificates for you:

goo.gl/images/dv5Eec

goo.gl/images/oyZEcu

goo.gl/images/FmrP3d

I did find one with female though:

You might want to check your own - you might be surprised.

By the way - no need to apologise - I realise how determined you are to paint trans women in a bad light, and that can make it difficult for you to remain objective.

Wakame · 06/06/2018 14:27

"Actually you don't 'pass' at all."

OK.

Wakame · 06/06/2018 14:28

"I see others also cringed at the 'girl on my birth certificate."

See above, and then check your own - you might be surprised.

Pratchet · 06/06/2018 14:31

Difference is, they were girls

RebelRogue · 06/06/2018 17:29

@Wakame just checked DD's birth certificate. It says female. So did all the other I've seen.

Girl is not a sex, female is.

Wakame · 06/06/2018 17:35

"So did all the other I've seen."

Are you saying you didn't see the ones I linked to? They just above you.

Or do your own search if you prefer:

Do you see any UK birth certificates with "girl" instead of "female"? Come on - be honest with me.

MIdgebabe · 06/06/2018 17:54

Found this interesting ...about conversational style in men and women. May explain why some threads turn tedious rather than illuminating ( or funny) www.the-guardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/06/is-the-term-mansplaining-sexist-google-autocomplete

ToeToToe · 06/06/2018 17:59

My children's UK birth certificates say 'male' or 'female.' I've just looked.

Italiangreyhound · 06/06/2018 17:59

"GibbertyFlibbert voters may want people to be positive to trans people. But self id takes away real way of telling who is trans and who is not. I am astounded genuine trans people, who have been through a process themselves would not want to have that process and those gate keeping protections there for other trans people.

RebelRogue · 06/06/2018 18:05

@Wakame I'm looking at a recent UK birth certificate. It states female. Posting pics of some 100 years ago proves nothing.
Sending me to google.es(spain?!?) also proves nothing.

At the moment birth certificates from the uk state female.
