Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Has anyone else just discovered that they are a RadFem?

I'd always thought of myself as a liberal feminist... yup, feminist to the core and ready to fight for women and girls where appropriate but not that knowledgeable - and happy to enjoy the fun of being a women (summer dresses, sexy flirting, beautiful bodies) while acknowledging the horrors (FGM, rape, systemic inequality)....

But who knew it.... It just takes the words Transwomen are men ... so very obvious to me on so many levels.... to turn me into a RadFem....

And I've moved from being happy to encounter the occasional Transwomen in the Ladies (in well-populated, chatty scenarios like clubs) ... treating us with respect and being treated with respect... to not wanting a Penis in any sex-segregated arena...to feel threatened by the incursion of men on "our" spaces....

to sleeping badly and wondering what kind of world we are developing for our DC where playing with the boundaries of gender stereotypes (like Boy George) is less acceptable and the blue/pink divide has become so much more entrenched and the almost automatic reaction to any gender dissatisfaction in the young is to explore whether they are trans, rather than their just questioning and exploring society and their role within it....

i was on twitter, looking at someones page who i know talks about TERFs and she reposted this

Shon Faye demonstrating the wit and maturity and empathy with women's lives we've all come to expect.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2018 22:38

I don't clash myself as a rad fem, but boy did my bullshit detector just do a lot of bleeping.

Given that alt right are quite into controlling women's reproduction and white male supremecy, I think the annual rad fem / alt right Christmas party would be a right barrel of laughs to be a fly on the wall at.

moofolk · 10/05/2018 22:41

@Loud. you are rad. own it. Flowers

TalkingintheDark · 10/05/2018 23:20

Thanks for that background info LaSqrrl. I didn’t know most of that. Adds a few layers to my understanding of it. Bit more peak trans, really.

UpstartCrow · 10/05/2018 23:21

RadFems are traditionally associated with Socialism. That seems to put a lot of people off for some reason.
RedFems, if you will.

SmG will be calling us Feminazis like the creepy misogynist right wing supremacist who invented the term any minute now, when they know perfectly well we prefer Feminazgûl.

polkadotwellies · 10/05/2018 23:39

I thought I was a radfem but now just class myself as a feminist.

SupermatchGame · 11/05/2018 00:02

Lol. Yes because radical feminism is exactly like the far right.

Well you would think so reading the: 'The slogan ‘Trans women are women’ is a lie. This is my sincerely held belief.' thread.

Is it a fair assumption? Marxism/ socialism was mentioned early in the thread.

UpstartCrow · 11/05/2018 00:28

It was a joke Lass, to counter the heavy handed accusations that radical feminists are somehow right wing.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 00:31

Replace Capitalism with Patriarchy. Bourgeois = men. Proletariat = women. Means of production = womb. Suprlass value = offspring.

I am new to this whole malarkey, is that right? Does Karl Marx's personal financier and best mate Frederick Engles get to be a Radical Feminist even though he has a penis. He's dead so technically he's not a male, he's a corpse. No male privilege there..

He said that the family was the first class structure which was established when we started farming, rather than being hunter gatherers.....
www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/download/pdf/origin_family.pdf

Isn't that pretty close to radical feminism?

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/05/2018 00:36

Well joke or not Upstart DJ posted this earlier.

but I think that the similarity between rad fem ideology and socialist ideology make this group open to conversion. Men can be feminists too. They can't join rad fem organisation but IMO we can build a co-aoltion. If we can't convert our closet allies how can we change the world? We can't just kill the men...

LightofaSilveryMoon · 11/05/2018 00:42

Right wing, left wing - they're all against women being women, and all for men being women, no debate. Arseholes.

I don't trust any male centric political party.

UpstartCrow · 11/05/2018 00:42

Lass, I made a pun, which I have explained to you. I have no idea why you leap on so many of my utterances and feel the need to start a thread about them, but its tedious.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 00:44

This is why I am so upset with the labour party. It's basic Marxism and their inability to understand women's position is an class based analysis is quite frankly baffling...

Left wing doesn't always equate with pro-woman. My socialist dad never saw anything wrong with behaving like an old school patriarch, abusing my mother whilst raving about what a good feminist he was.

Is it just a small minority in Bromentum cheering on the AWS issue or a sign of systemic misogyny? Sometimes I think that left wing 'virtue signalling' politics can be a way to avoid examining your own internalised prejudice and privilege.

IfNot · 11/05/2018 01:08

I'm not sure I am one.

All I know is that since about age 14 I was enraged at the unfairness of being female.
I had a period of complacency in my twenties when I used my fake power (being pretty) to buy minor advantages. I still would have called myself a feminist at the time, but I despised men for being so easy to manipulate if I'm honest.
Becoming a mother clarified my thoughts and made me think about other women instead of just myself. Hitting 40..I'm back to bring enraged again!
It's not because of the trans thing though. It's sexual assault, FGM, women being shafted at work, lack of political representation, objectification in the media, the hatred of old women, the failure of men to step up domestically, the vilification of single mothers, and the systematic assault on working class women by the cuts. The Internet has also opened my eyes to just how deep the fear and loathing of women goes in some men. Too many men really, and I find that both terrifying and very sad.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 01:14

Yes. I think many women (especially younger ones) are in a bit of a Stockholm Syndrome situation. They see so much evidence of how much men hate women, and it's easier to play along with it rather than be targeted for abuse. It's also easier to blame the women it happens to for being TERF or SWERF or right wing or whatever so they brought it on themselves. And to shut it out as if not they would have to try to do something about it.

What are you on about? I got your pun. I was asking a question if there was a connection bewteen radical feminism and socialism- given Lippy had made that point early on the thread.

How do you manage to interpret that as "leaping on your utterances"?

Is there a connection? Lippy seems to think so. If there is then radical feminisn is not an ideology I could support.

Datun · 11/05/2018 02:00

LaSqrrl

I was reading an account of transactivists targeting a sweet shop in Vancouver. Their crime was to put up a poster giving details of the Vancouver rape refuge.

The sweetshop owner was bombarded by negative reviews and intimidation.

VRR is still being bullied. Transactivists will never forgive them for not allowing a misogynistic man to become a counsellor of abused women. Or anyone who supports them.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 11/05/2018 02:09

It happened gradually for me. I was definitely all about the liberal feminism and freedom of choice and so on.

When you realise that there is so little freedom of choice for most women, it's eye-opening. Yay, I have the freedom to wear lipstick or to not, how incredibly thrilling!!

The trans madness was the final nail in the coffin.

Vancouver is a war zone on a rather low simmering but constant war on women. The transgender identified male advocates vandalized the Vancouver Women's Library within days of it opening.

The enabling of the TIM and his flying monkeys to stalk and harass, over years, the Vancouver rape refuge and their supporters, is rule by mob - since when was that legal?

Re Canada - Trudeau does a great job of covering his tracks with his "woke-bro" cover.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 04:12

I hate that dude-bro so much now! Peoplekind ffs Trudeau. If you want to see something genuinely hilarious check out this video. I laughed so hard I did a little wee when I saw it - damn my cis-privilege!

Coyoacan · 11/05/2018 04:16

I've always been a feminist but never got into the theory of it all. I don't know if I am a radical feminist, but everything indicates I am, for the critique of transgenderism and not less importantly for the stance of prostitution and pornography. One thing for certain I am not and never have been a liberal feminist
