Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

SwearyG · 15/04/2018 00:21

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

Ffs, how many TRAs are there? Surely we outnumber them?
By spending power alone I would think judging by their crying poverty all the time!
What is actually going on here? Am I being a tin foil hatter?

And yes, thank you Justine Flowers

SexMatters · 15/04/2018 00:28

Flowers Thank you @JustineMumsnet
Free speech is precious and this forum is needed and greatly appreciated.

bluescreen · 15/04/2018 00:28

We are many, they are few.

I think they make a disproportionate amount of noise, how by piling on venues and advertisers. Just looking at the Jam Jar Facebook pages (where the We Need to Talk Bristol event is being held) this week was horrid. Multiple 1* reviews because they’re hosting a debate. That plus phone calls and emails might be quite intimidating.

But yes we outnumber them, and we don’t stoop to their tactics. Hopefully advertisers are reading and seeing this.

Thanks Your stance is much appreciated Justine. Smile

Oh my giddy aunt.

Anyone with a share token please link!

@JustineMumsnet thank you.

If you stand for free speech then I stand with you.

And for any advertiser who stands for the same, I support you too.

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 15/04/2018 00:32

Thank you Justine. Your strength is much appreciated. I would certainly hope that most big brand advertisers know which side their bread is buttered.

LadyGrey18 · 15/04/2018 00:32

I was just coming here to mention this article. Really pleased to see this and thank-you to Mumsnet.

I wouldn't have been educated on this issue if it wasn't for Mumsnet. Even though I was seeing some of the effects of this IRL, it took women on here explaining it to help me make sense of what was going on and also to see what the effects were for women in other situations.

It must be really difficult dealing with the onslaught from transactivists so thank-you for continuing to allow women to discuss this issue. Flowers

As the previous article in The Times said, Mumsnet have not taken a side on self-ID - they are just permitting women to discuss it. Discussing proposed changes to the law and how it will affect us should not be controversial.

Well bring it on advertisers! Boycott Mumsnet for allowing women free speech and providing support at their most vulnerable time, whether it be dealing with a newborn or divorce, or infidelity, or seeing your rights dwindle. Give us the names of these women-hating companies, so that we may boycott them too. Let's start with Mercure hotels who refused to host a group of women discussing legal changes and posted diffamatory tweets against them. We are plenty and we hold the purse. We will not allow attacks on free speech and women's rights. Justine and Mumsnet staff, we are so grateful for your hard work Flowers

Justine Flowers

I'm bloody sure women spend more money in women's clothing departments than men do

So keep men out of our changing rooms - or I will spend my money elsewhere

Thanks

THANK YOU @JustineMumsnet! Massive FlowersGinCakeFlowersGinCake[beer][bacon] for everybody at @MNHQ who has worked so hard to allow this debate to happen.

I stand with you.

TheXXFactor · 15/04/2018 00:43

Yay for Justine and all at MNHQ who defend women's right to free speech Flowers

Make it clear to any advertiser who threatens to pull out that you will name and shame them. They would be fools to throw away millions of MNetter customers to please a few TRAs.

Hackedoffwoman · 15/04/2018 00:46

Brava Justine! FlowersGin

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/04/2018 00:47

Thank you @JustineMumsnet and @MNHQ

Roberts said: “A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

BingBongSong · 15/04/2018 00:49

Thank you so much to @JustineMumsnet and all at MNHQ. Keeping this space open for us must be really difficult, you must be facing huge pressure.

I have learned so much about so much in the years I've been on MN. Long may it continue Flowers Gin.
