Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

SwearyG · 15/04/2018 00:21

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

Thank you so much @JustineMumsnet Flowers

Thank you so very much for this Justine and everyone at Mumsnet.

I was at the Cardiff meeting they tried so hard to shut down. They failed there and they can't silence free speech on mumsnet either. I have been thinking how hard it must be for you all to stand firm in the face of a barrage of threats and intimidation, I really appreciate you efforts.

Thank you Justine Flowers

Trans activists can make a big noise on social media and by phone because it's easy for them to sock puppet multiple personalities, and because its a goldfish bowl where a snappy twitter lie can get lots of trigger happy virtue signalling likes and retweets, instantly made and instantly forgotten.

In contrast, out in the real world the people are real and we are having real conversations, people don't just click like and move on! We talk to each other and make decisions and we volunteer and work, raise our children and maintain our households. Our influence is big and it is solid and meaningful, it doesn't disappear off a screen after a quick skim read.

It's time all politicians and organisation leaders realise that embracing the virtual over the real commits them to an empty meaninglessness that there will be real and lasting consequences for.

I echo the thanks to Justine & everyone at MN for this discussion space. So we don't know who the 3 advertisers are? However, I'm sure Justine & colleagues must have highlighted to them our spending power vs your typical TRA's. If we do find out, let's make our feelings known to them - politely of course. I think I may do so anyway to my banks & other main beneficiaries of my spending anyway.

To keep this open, I would be happy to donate anyway if there should be a revenue shortfall.

Thank you mumsnet. I am so relieved to read this

LightofaSilveryMoon · 15/04/2018 09:53

Thank you, Mumsnet and Justine.

And good post, RosenbergW, just above!

Cwenthryth · 15/04/2018 09:54

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thankyou Justine

I tried to post a thankyou comment on the times but it is still pending 2 hours later (didn’t say anything controversial I don’t think!). Comments on other articles have been immediately posted.

@RosenbergW

Spot on.

Brilliant to see this article! Thanks so much much Justine and MNHQ FlowersFlowersFlowers

Badgerthebodger · 15/04/2018 10:09

Thank you @JustineMumsnet Flowers

This is such an incredibly important space, giving oxygen to issues which TRAs would prefer to see swept under the carpet. I can imagine only too well how much pressure MNHQ must be under from those who want debate to be stifled, so thanks again - it’s very much appreciated.

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 10:10

That is 10000 votes.
10000 decision makers.
10000 money spenders.

I reckon I know at least ten people who wanted to sign but were nervous about being targetted because of it. They still spend money and vote. They will feel more confident that 10000+ people are already stood up.

This is just the beginning!

Floisme · 15/04/2018 10:10

Thank you so much Justine Flowers This is so important. I also would like to know the names of any advertisers that endorse bullying women.

I do think we need to stick even harder to TGLWGH because I don't think this is just about numbers - advertisers will be more worried about being associated with bigotry. And please can we lay off blue hair - I like it.

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 10:18

And bad dressers! I happily admit I don't care at all about clothing for myself, I'll wear any old thing.
I still buy clothes for three kids. And toys. And games, movies, music, nappies, makeup, mobile phone credit.. all things I don't need or want for myself. Three kids learning from me about where to go for the things they want, and who to be loyal to.

Hope these companies can chew on that thought for a bit.

Brava Justine and Mumsnet

I have been despondent about recent Mumsnet policy. Thanks for restoring my faith in the wonderfulness that is Mumsnet. I have learned so much on this site, on all manner of subjects.

Thanks for defending free speech.

Mumsnet is one of the few websites I have whitelisted, so that I can see the adverts.

I will go the extra step and consider buying from those advertisers

Freshlylaidterf · 15/04/2018 10:22

I was threatened this week via my business about my GC views and had spoken to MNHQ about getting my account deleted but this makes me feel like I shouldn’t back down
Thats awful circle

Freshlylaidterf · 15/04/2018 10:24

Oh and thanks Justine

RogerAllamsFangirl · 15/04/2018 10:26

I've started a thread in AIBU about brands I've bought because of Mumsnet. Might want to pile over there and collate everyone's in the same place.

Political parties, especially Labour as Owen Jones informs us they like to troll women.
