Justine stands up for FWR in The Times

Justine is quoted in The Times today saying that TRAs are pressuring advertisers to withdraw from the site but they’re willing to take the hit to keep the discussion open. It’s very heartening after the threads of the last few days re FWR being hidden and the worries about this space being censored.

Flowers to @JustineMumsnet - thank you.

It raises an interesting question. Do advertisers want to give up millions of women who are customers for the sake of a few hundred transgender identified males, and their supporters who may or may not be customers, who oppose the women's right to discuss a change in law that directly affects women.
We are reminded once again that transgender advocates view women's rights as anti trans.

LittlePaintBox · 15/04/2018 01:03

Thank you @JustineMumsnet, what a fantastic defence of our right to free speech.

As women we don't only buy the food and clothes for our families, we choose insurance companies, fuel providers, phone and internet providers, who we bank with and who we buy mortgages from. We buy the pet food, choose the caterers and venues for family and works' events. We book the holidays, choose care packages and care homes for our elderly relatives. Because women are responsible for making so many of the bloody decisions about where money is spent, whether we want to or not it falls to us.

So, come on in and try to damage Mumsnet's advertising revenue if you want. As we're mostly left with all the drudgery of managing the finances of families I think we have more power than most groups of people. We'll see . . .

AnitaLovesVictor · 15/04/2018 01:04

Justine - THANK YOU.

And I love you. And Mumsnet. And Mumsnet feminists. Thanks Cake Gin

I'm glad to hear no advertisers have actually pulled out - hopefully they won't.

Here's to women speaking freely. Wine

Writersblock2 · 15/04/2018 01:05

Brilliant! This is excellent news!!

Datun · 15/04/2018 01:05

Roberts said: “A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Bloody hell, Justine !!!

That is awesome.

Datun · 15/04/2018 01:11

According to Venice, the Mecure hotel has backtracked, saying that tweet was unauthorised.

She thinks it is in light of the conviction of the violent transactivist, Wood.

Presumably the Mercure wants to avoid aligning themselves with such behaviour.

Maybe Mumsnet advertisers, too, are beginning to see through the bullying, violent tactics of transactivists.

BarrackerBarmer · 15/04/2018 01:11

Everything WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe said.

Plus

We vote too.

R0wantrees · 15/04/2018 01:14

The threats are the latest move in a campaign by transgender activists to inhibit discussion of potential legal changes that would allow people born male to self-identify as women.

Thank you for for standing firm!

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 15/04/2018 01:29

Thank you Barracker

Thank you Justine.

As a group of people, us women, regardless of how much money we have, are usually left with the choosing of goods and services. So I haven't bought Nestle products for 30 years, haven't bought from amazon/starbucks et al for donkey's years. We have principles. Doesn't matter how small or big an impact it might have on the organisation selling. We hold the purse strings. MN has huge audience of people who listen and think. We'll see.

AnitaLovesVictor · 15/04/2018 01:33

I spend hundreds of pounds a month in Tesco - feeding family of 5 plus pets.

I also spend a lot of money in various other MN advertisers - I buy birdseye fishfingers (far too lazy to make my own!), M&S, Boots, loads.

Hopefully the advertisers will know who spends the most money with them. Very glad to hear they haven't lost any advertisers.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 15/04/2018 01:49

Go 'ed Justine 🙌🙌🙌🙌

TurningWood · 15/04/2018 01:49

A dozen women in my family and two friends along with one friends mum are boycotting M&S clothing because they let men in the women and girls changing rooms.

I am slowly working my way through women I know to keep them safe. Give it up M&S, there are more of us. Put back the sex exemptions in female changing rooms.

WombOfOnesOwn · 15/04/2018 01:56

THANK YOU, Justine. It means the world to hear this.

DarthArts · 15/04/2018 02:19

I posted on the thread AIBU (given its in active conversations unlike us here in the sin bin Wink) but I want to say again a huge thank you.

I really appreciate the effort MN has gone to to keep this debate open.

I did wonder if something might be brewing after Janice Turner's article wrt (I paraphrase) MN having no policy on the matter other than to allow freedom of discussion.

It's a great point to make your stand on, especially given recent events.

The Mecure Hotel tweets were out of line, but it took them 2 days to remove them.

That said it's a good reminder that the reason why they had to back down was the respectful and reasoned approach WPUK has always taken.

WTGLWGH absolutely worked here and we should keep that in mind.

AnitaLovesVictor · 15/04/2018 02:23

Absolutely - WTGLWGH all the way.

Mumsnet has always been absolutely clear that we have to follow respectful talk guidelines.

Now pease put us (FWR) back in Active @MNHQ !! Would really appreciate it. Thanks

womanhuman · 15/04/2018 02:25

Justine FlowersBrew

DarthArts · 15/04/2018 02:25

In the meantime post on the AIBU thread Grin

Respectfully of course.

AnitaLovesVictor · 15/04/2018 02:30

MNetters on twitter might want to post their support respectfully on @mumsnettowers too.

This is a great thing Justine has done for the free speech of women.

Trousersdontmakemeaman · 15/04/2018 02:36

Where is the @crispbuttyfan when we need a friend to celebrate?

TerfinUSA · 15/04/2018 03:42

The idea of a boycott by TRAs is rather amusing. On the one hand you have a key advertising demographic making family purchasing decisions, on the other you have the likes of Tara Wolf, violent unemployed criminal. I mean it doesn't really compute, does it.

thebewilderness · 15/04/2018 03:49

I think it is the gender fluid police officers that give them pause more than the wolf.

LiquoriceTea · 15/04/2018 04:43

For those that want to be women there is so much anger and threatening behaviour towards women. Coming onto a predominantly women's website and threatening sponsors just because they want the ability to talk. Its so wrong .

Thankyou Justine.

FlaviaAlbia · 15/04/2018 05:07

This is the best news for ages. Its amazing to see Justine make a public stance on this Flowers

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 15/04/2018 05:19

Thank you Justine! ThanksThanks

It is so amazing that you are prepared to take a stand for women and our rights.

Advertisers really need to think about who their core demographic is!
