WPUK as events continue to take place across the U.K.
Save the date for Cornwall

Excellent news Smile

DistaffSide · 13/04/2018 21:49

This is brilliant news! Any announcement on speakers or is it just the date?

Bear with me for this weird analogy: but these meetings springing up everywhere makes me think of mushrooms. They pop up out of the soil but the mushroom you see is just the productive part that spreads its spores to create new mushroom colonies. What you don't see are the vast networks of tiny threads (mycelium) running through the soil that are the main part of the organism. So, you can knock down and jump on the mushrooms, but you never know when that vast underground matrix might make the next mushroom pop up out of the ground into the light!

What's the date? Smile

DistaffSide · 13/04/2018 22:08

9th June, it's on the WP UK Website.

'A Woman's Place is Fighting Back'

Writersblock2 · 13/04/2018 22:33

It’s a Save the Date, so details will follow.

Disstaffside It’s exactly like that, and not just with WPUK - since women have become more aware of the proposed changes to legislation, loads of groups have been springing up. There’s a vast network beavering away to get the job done.

Women are brilliant. :)

And I can’t believe in my excitement I left the date off here! Yes, Saturday 9 June!
Expect to see some people from across the tamar too!

Cornwall. Brilliant. Hope its not too far for me this time. Considered Cardiff but couldn't do it on a work day.

DistaffSide · 13/04/2018 23:14

I think commute is just about doable for me and I'll be getting my ticket early. Do we have a secret mn sign? A pom bear tucked discreetly in a lapel?

Writersblock2 · 14/04/2018 01:23

Haha. Can certainly have a Mumsnet signal if you want one. Would be great to see the event well attended - there isn’t much openly radfem activity down here. Maybe it will be the start.

I'll be there if I can, I'm very supportive of what WPUK are doing and how they conduct themselves.

Writersblock2 · 14/04/2018 11:03

Excellent! We should all meet up for a drink afterwards!

DistaffSide · 14/04/2018 12:35

Now that is a good idea.....

RaininSummer · 14/04/2018 12:44

Keen to make a plan to meet up before and after if possible.

Ereshkigal · 14/04/2018 13:42

Wow, a Saturday! It's not local but would make a lovely weekend break and I have family in Weymouth. Might consider going.

DistaffSide · 14/04/2018 14:42

Raininsummer good plan. Ereshkigal wow, would love to meet you, always enjoy your posts.

Ereshkigal · 14/04/2018 14:52

Thank you Distaff!

ArtemisRhodes · 14/04/2018 17:16

I wonder what TRA groups there are in Cornwall? Because the instant they hear where it is they will start harassing the venue.

I don't know if you know this but when they are done harassing one venue, they also harass every other possible venue in the immediate vicinity, warning that IF they were to accept a booking from AWP or Venice Allan, the venue will be subjected to picketing/protesting etc and also that they will tell all their friends locally never to use that venue again for anything.

And that is how they get their way.

Ereshkigal · 14/04/2018 17:18

I doubt they'll hear where it is until the last minute. The town I guess, yes. I imagine they have somewhere in mind and local desire for a meeting.

Writersblock2 · 14/04/2018 17:28

There is a reason it’s listed as Cornwall. ;) The venue will be kept secret until the last moment but we are well aware that because of the geography of Cornwall, there aren’t a huge number of appropriate places to target. There isn’t a large number of TRAs down here, we don’t think, but we’d expect there still to be harassment via media. We are formulating a contingency plan should issues occur. Our venue is also fully aware of everything surrounding these events. So fingers crossed!

And if anybody wants to meet up before/after then that would be fab. Once tickets go on sale I might open a FB group and we can discuss it. We really need to show the rest of the U.K. that Cornwall is on board with this too!

Btw Weymouth is Dorset, so still a fair bit from Cornwall

OP posts:
Ereshkigal · 14/04/2018 17:33

I know, but could break the journey there. It's just a thought Smile

Writersblock2 · 14/04/2018 17:36

Oh I see! I thought you thought it was in Cornwall, sorry! You should definitely do it. :) :)

This is very interesting. I've been living in Cornwall for the past 14 years and it is a very conservative place, If there are trans activists down here, I think they would be quite rare and not very vocal but of course I could be wrong.

I think it's great that this is happening, most people I have spoken to here haven't a clue what I'm going on about and do indeed think I have lost the plot!

Writersblock2 · 14/04/2018 21:05

lostplot That’s my impression too, so hopefully it will be fine.

Can we count you in? Grin
