WPUK as events continue to take place across the U.K.
Save the date for Cornwall

I will definitely try to make it. I just have to make sure that we don't have anyone staying, we suddenly become very popular over the summer months!

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 15/04/2018 09:35

Sigh - I'm back in the uk for a weekend at the end of June - looks like I'm going to be out of luck at making an event since they'll only just have had one... I shall continue to support from afar

Scentofwater · 15/04/2018 10:23

I’m a lurker and not usually engaged with these sorts of things but this topic concerns me, would people like me be welcome to this event?

I think there may be more TRA in Cornwall than you’d expect, mainly in the University towns. There certainly were several active TRAs when I worked there a few years ago, along with a worrying number of naive young women who supported them without question.

lostplot · 15/04/2018 11:12

Of course you would scentofwater. That's interesting about the TRAs, I live in a very rural area so I don't go to any towns on a regular basis. I'm pretty sure all the farmers around here are oblivious as to what is going on.

Writersblock2 · 15/04/2018 11:38

ScentifWater - ofc you’d be welcome. It’s not just for women who have already made their minds up, its for the respectful debate of the issue generally. At other WPUK events there have been people who (respectfully) disagree and people who have made their minds up.

Curious about where you worked now based on your comments (I’m not asking, don’t worry). I’m sure there are some TRAs down here but I’m not sure if they are organised into groups, if that makes sense. Either way, we will be prepared.

lostplot yes, I’ve been mostly rural too, though I’ve had friends in a few of the main towns etc. I’ve yet to encounter someone I know who has much idea about these issues.

Excuse my typos - on my phone!

ScentofWater of course you'd be welcome, as are all people interested in finding out more.

I went to my first meeting in Bristol and was made very welcome, I'm not part of any political scene, or any kind of expert. I'm supportive of trans people, I am only concerned that any changes to policy don't impact on women and girls. There's no 'hate' at these meetings, what ever the TRAs are saying....

Scentofwater · 15/04/2018 12:46

Thanks all, I definitely have made up my mind iyswim I just can’t be especially active in supporting it for personal reasons. I wasn’t sure if by going I’d be expected to commit to getting more involved than I can be.

I worked at one of the two unis here (you’ve got 50/50 chance of guessing!) in a support position, they have no power over me now, and knowing that much about me gives no one else any ammo either so I don’t mind saying. Though a few years ago being seen as gender critical would definitely have cost me my job.

Most of the transgender students were TIF and I felt so sorry for them, they were desperate to identify their way out of the misogyny they had encountered in life.

Writersblock2 · 15/04/2018 13:57

Attendance certainly wouldn’t commit you to anything, don’t worry. I’m not sure what we are doing after the meeting in terms of any other activism - im kinda hoping WPUK will be supporting future events about a whole myriad of topics impacting women and that it can become a more regular thing.

As Distaff said, there is no hate. We all have different political backgrounds (often none), different jobs, different life experiences etc. So you’re more than welcome, whatever your “angle” is.

I’m another lurker emerging out of the woodwork to say I’ll be saving the date!
I’ve only become aware of this issue through MN (& subsequently Twitter) but have thought I might just get away with anonymous silent cheerleading since I haven’t had to face any issues IRL & no one in my circle seems to know it exists, so I’ve been quite happy in my blissful comfort zone and feeling like I’m doing my bit by reading the forum & thinking positive thoughts! But if WPUK are making the effort to come this far then I’ll be there showing my support & hopefully learning more too about our way forward - it’s time to step up I think (as much as my natural inclination is to just go for a long sea swim and hope it all quietly goes away 😕)

DistaffSide · 17/04/2018 19:48

Ihaventgottime Fantastic that you'll be coming to the meeting and hopefully the pre-meeting and post-meeting too.... Grin

I'm looking forward to the speaker announcement. I checked today but nothing up so far.

I feel bad Disturbinglyorange, maybe there will be one, who knows. Feels like things are moving fast...

SuperDandy · 18/04/2018 14:10

Can't find it on the site - can some kind person link for me please?

LizzieSiddal · 18/04/2018 14:35

Brilliant. Unfortunately I’m no where near there but I’m glad these meetings are going ahead.

Writersblock2 · 18/04/2018 14:42

Do you know if anything is planned for Dorset in the near future or do I need to take a day off and ride down to Cornwall?

Writersblock2 · 18/04/2018 16:39

Hi Pantah630, sorry, I have no idea about Dorset. Personally, I reckon you should come on down to Cornwall. :P

WPUK are now working on trying to get the website back, thanks for alerting. Hoping it’s not nefarious!

@pickledparsnip - great!! Glad to know the word is getting out there. Happy you’re attending too!
