Lily Madigan - Twitter Update

LM has changed the name of their twitter account, deleted all previous posting history and unblocked lots of users.

Has tweeted (in response to someone else) that non-one has spoken to them about online behaviour.

LM did get in a twitter spat after comparing trans struggles to racism and slavery and got a lot of previous supporters complaining. LM did issue a twitter apology about this then took a twitter break and has resurfaced with this new "clean" account.

So not sure what's happened here.

I would hope maybe a degree of self reflection.

As ever, let's make sure any posts are not offensive please.

LM isn't employed. It's a volunteer role. Volunteer roles are very tricky when it comes to accountability.

No. Quit it with the hyperbole.

  1. Lily is not a teenager.
  2. Lily is an elected officer within the Labour Party.
  3. Reading and commenting on someone's public tweets is not remotely close to stalking. Stalking is a criminal offence and MNHQ would not tolerate it.

There's an election coming up. And there's been a big thing within the Labour Party lately about stuff on social media not looking terribly clever to other people.

All party members especially those who hold positions within the party are probably being gently reminded that this might be an issue because of the anti-semitism row.

I would suggest here, that there is an awareness that there might be one or two controversial posts.

And I do wonder if more has been said.

Just the other day I was posting about how those TRAs in political positions were aggrevating the problem in particular. And how a grown up needed to step in and defuse it.

Mn has tried to defuse today. Lily has deleted a load of stuff. I note the LGBT LD have gone awol for two days. So I wonder. Pure coincidence?

Or has something more happened behind the scenes?

Has someone stepped up to the plate and said that, this is getting out of hand?

I personally, don't tend to believe in coincidence.

I hope to god, that someone has said, calm the fuck down. Because its really not in anyone's interest the way it was going.

Agree with Gasp. I know plenty of women who had responsible positions and/or were mothers at 20. My Grandfather had been working for six years by then. My best friend was studying and caring for a terminally ill parent having lost the other two years earlier. Being carefree at 20 is fine, obv, but LM has chosen this role and with it comes accountability. You can’t behave appallingly and then plead youth.

Red - it's certainly plausible.

Deleting thousands of tweets is a pretty radical step, there must have been some catalyst for it.

I hope so. If people cab be suspended for talking basic biology then constantly comparing black women to some sub human species has to result in some kind if action.

Lily's not a teenager but is younger than my son who I still view as vulnerable and sometimes not making sensible decisions.
I'm more annoyed with the LP allowing a young man to be a woman's officer as I presume CLPs have LGBT officers and branches elect reps to the CLP (or did years ago when I was in the LP) and I'd have thought as Lily is under 26 he could also be a young socialist (if they still call it that) rep as well, so plenty of ways on to the CLP without taking a woman's place.

I was a mum at 20. Studying, working, being vocal on Twitter trying to reduce stigma around young parents. I was responsible for what I put on social media and would never dream of blaming my age if I made a discriminatory or inflammatory comment. Lily Madigan is not a teenager and if you are involved in any kind of Twitter activism, you accept the rough with the smooth.

Look at the teenagers (actual teenagers) from the school in Parkland. They respond to masses of online hate from people three or four times their age with dignity, they engage in debate, they consider what they say before they say it. They have more class and online self-awareness in their little fingers than Madigan has in an entire body.

I assume someone had a word and then the apology happened. I really respect her but I was surprised at jennifer’s response. Don’t get the fawning thing at all. This is an adult, not a child, an adult who has gloated about having access to women party members’ “pretty data “ .

I've made the decision not to engage with mean people. Lots of trans activists cross the line.

I think the anti self ID campaign just lost it's best recruiter. While I am pleased that Lily seems to be experiencing personal growth, I'm saddened to lose a source of entertainment :-)

Nah, my better self agrees strongly with @2rebecca above. Someone has clearly had a strong word and hopefully Lily will be happier for it.

I was a student age 20 and although I was sensible in some ways I made some very silly decisions re men, was more insecure, had more extreme political views and was more of a drama queen.
Most personality disorders improve as people get older, probably part of feeling emotions less intensely.

Idk if lily is experiencing personal growth. The cynic in me sees the LP as trying to clean up her act as a way for her (young privileged TIMs) and autogynephiles to be accepted by the wider population in the wake of Man Friday etc. To paint natal women as bigots. It could be nothing more than a charm offensive tbh.
