This is the petition asking the government to consult with women on the proposals to enshrine gender identity in law.

Hawk that school project.....things like that make me even more amazed this isn't being widely discussed

Mner · 15/03/2018 00:17

DH has signed.

DarthArts · 15/03/2018 01:56

It will be a slow build.

We do need to think about being more pro-active on social media though.

If the petition had been a few days before we could have followed the interview with LM on Talk radio that got a fair amount of interest on Twitter for example.

What's key is to jump on every opportunity like that and use social media in the context of people talking about this issue who have many thousands of followers.

So create a twitter account and get ready to use it when the opportunity arises. It can be anonymous and all you have to do is tweet the link to the petition. Nothing else.

Honestly SM is really key here and we need to catch up.

Agreeing hashtags would be a great start.

Darth "So create a twitter account and get ready to use it when the opportunity arises. It can be anonymous and all you have to do is tweet the link to the petition. Nothing else"

Tweet to....? If I set up an anonymous Twitter account I won't get any followers.

I really salute those of you going public but I'd lose my job for sure and reputation is everything in my line of work.

RoderickRules · 15/03/2018 07:53

@hawkeye they are gaslighting children.

This is a nightmare.
People need to wake up.

Testingnamechange1 · 15/03/2018 08:13

I posted this thread yesterday in an attempt to get a title that would be meaningful to someone who didn’t know about the issue when it comes in Active conversations. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3193716-Petition-to-ask-for-consultation-on-the-effect-on-women-and-girls-before-making-it-possible-for-a-man-to-legally-become-a-woman-just-by-signing-a-piece-of-paper

I failed on the ‘short punchy title bit’ (see the link for the criticism Grin) - could someone post a better thread in chat that we can keep ‘live’? I can’t post so much today and I was aiming for a thread that would be available for bringing people into the issue.

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 09:02

Its hard with social media though. I debated it but I have clients who might see it, not read it properly and take it the wrong way. I can't risk that in my field (discrimination expert!). If someone sends it to me I would 'like' it though (if that's the correct terminology)

I'm sharing but directly with people I think will understand the issues. So far:
Me
DH and DS1
DFil DMil
DSil
DF DM
DSis and DBil
DSis (who forwarded to 10 friends)
BF, BF's DH, BF's DM BF's DD
6 x other friends (2 have confirmed they've signed, one is looking into it but there are two children in her DD's class who are trans (aged 10!) and she's concerned about being seen to support the petition)

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 09:05

Go Calder Valley! and (who'd have thought it) Brighton!

LangCleg · 15/03/2018 09:12

I think it's quite interesting that Calder Valley (Hebden) and Brighton, two places where trans will be more prominent than in most of the country, have the most signatures.

MsMcWoodle · 15/03/2018 09:15

*cloudtree" People in Brighton understand the issue. It's my home town and I have been threatened by transwomen there. Yes in a Ladies toilet!
Calder Valley though!

totallywired · 15/03/2018 09:19

Also go Bristol West! 33 signature an the MP with the best name, Thangham Debbonaire!

I'm in Brighton, there is no way I can share my views, I may do with certain people, but in person where I can explain myself at length. Most people I know would think I am being bigoted. I took lengthy discussions to persuade my husband. He couldn't counter my arguments with logic in the end, but was stuck on I wasn't being 'nice'. I've fully persuaded him now though, I think he had never fully thought about the issues, just accepted the doctrine.

OvaHere · 15/03/2018 09:25

I believe Hebden Bridge, at least at one point, was known as the lesbian capital of the UK. I'm assuming that is one of the reasons it has a high number of signatures. I think in general it's very feminist rather than liberal iyswim.

MrsBodger · 15/03/2018 09:42

My constituency still stuck on 6. It’s v rural here and I think most people are oblivious.

I appreciate your worries, but I don't think that's necessarily true. You don't have to use it like Facebook. Looking at Twitter, there are loads of pretty ambiguous accounts that say very little about the actual owner. Lots of people just automatically follow back people who follow/tweet them just to raise their numbers.

Just go on Twitter, get another email address, start an account that's not too Radical Feminist looking, (there's no point preaching to the converted), and follow/like/retweet loads of people as quickly as possible - writers, journalists (they tend to automatically follow back), newspapers, etc all mixed in with people posting pretty pictures, food blog (anything that's just normal interest). Then start dropping in links to the Petition, some of the appalling anti-women stuff form Lily etc.

Once again, you are not obliged to be "yourself" - create a persona that does the job.

newtlover · 15/03/2018 09:52

4751
10 in my constituency

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 09:52

Doesn't anybody know anyone in North West Hampshire? I simply don't believe there are no feminist MNers or friends of MNers in NW Hampshire.

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 09:55

Lewisham is doing well too! In fact lewisham Deptford is in the lead!!

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 15/03/2018 09:55

Men really get it, once you say to them - it is ok to have an opinion. I've had males I've asked very happy to sign. Younger one was a bit more buying into gender stereotypes, but acknowledged there are genuine concerns to be fully explored - then signed.

If they can't be won over - you'd have to question their critical thinking skills - however, I am guilty if that too so know it's about finding the right key words which draw people in and open their minds to finding out bit more.

It really is easy to just hear as background noise you wish would just stop. Different people will have different words that bring them in - for me it was 'biology' that caught my attention.

The petition is good way to bring into conversation and even if they don't sign (yet) it opens their ears next time they hear it on the news and say 'oh I see a bit more what soandso was talking about'.

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 09:57

DH is bothered about bits of it and not other bits. Couldn't care less about the "cis" label (which enraged my DSis), furious about misinformation and grooming in schools.

SuitedandBooted · 15/03/2018 10:05

cloudtree

Has he signed the Petition? If he's furious about some parts he should. He doesn't get to chose which bits to stop - tell him it's not a pick and mix!

RoderickRules · 15/03/2018 10:05

Lewisham has high BME population, these women are going to be really affected by these changes for cultural/religious reasons.

Women who may be limited in their options already.

This makes me so angry.

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 10:11

He's signed and has passed on suited I was just explaining reinforcing what a pp had said about finding the bit that suddenly makes it click with people.

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 10:14

Shamelessly waffling to bump tbh

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 15/03/2018 10:14

Cloudtree: did you show your husband the link below shared on another thread? CPS

www.transgendertrend.com/cps-schools-project-the-erasure-of-sex-and-the-silencing-of-girls/

His worries are reality and here. Hope he has signed - if not, we know you'll keep working ..!

cloudtree · 15/03/2018 10:15

He's signed (bumpety bump!)
