This is the petition asking the government to consult with women on the proposals to enshrine gender identity in law.

Either that or it's akin to this...

But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.

I've written (again - got no reply last time) to my MP, and this time I have also written to the other candidate, as it's not that safe a seat. Here is my letter to the MP. The other one has some LM specific concerns in it too.

Dear

I'm a signatory to a petition that has recently been published.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/2141188_

The petition asks that women be consulted about the potential impact of the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act. The change would allow people to legally self identify as their chosen sex.

I want transgender people to live the lives they want to live, to be safe and to have a voice.

But I feel that the way this law is being positioned makes it potentially detrimental to biologically born women and girls. This is because no protection has yet been built in to prevent people from self IDing as a particular sex for reasons that have nothing to do with their gender identity.

I believe that anyone should be allowed to self identify as their chosen gender, (gender is a social construct) but I feel very cautious about people being able to self identify as a particular sex ( which is biological).

The Equality Act 2010 provides that some spaces should be segregated by sex. For example - women's refuges. I believe that these provisions should stay intact in order to protect women and girls from people who may manipulate self ID precisely in order to gain access to single-sex spaces. Other examples are: prisons, health provision, sport. I hope you share my concern that Self ID will have the impact of distorting crime data, which in turn could detrimentally influence public policy.

I am particularly concerned about the government's attitude in recent times, which seems calculatedly to promote trans rights at the expense of women's rights, through the GRA. For this reason, I am currently unable to vote Conservative.

As I have explained, I feel it is vital to promote the right of trans people to live the lives they want to live, be safe and to have their voices heard. But not where this institutionally and societally impinges on the rights, safety and voices of others.

The current trans discourse on this issue is, frankly, misogynist. I appeal to you to do some basic research on social media and witness this for yourself. It seems to me that one aspect of the GRA is to give the 'extreme trans' lobby influence which is disproportionate to the issues they face, given the current protections under the EA. Some of them also seem to have taken it as licence to abuse and silence anyone who wishes to debate the issues.

The petition I have linked above is asking that women are consulted about the proposals. That's all. If you agree that women should have their own voices in this debate - and in fact that there should even be a debate - please do let me know.

@Catmint can I use your incredibly succinct wording to email my MP please?

Catmint · 14/03/2018 18:28

I would be honoured if any MNer wanted to use the wording Wizard, I should have said, that was why I posted it.

IFancyASliceOfCake · 14/03/2018 19:12

Catmint I’ve been sitting on an email to my MP for weeks thinking how best to word it and drafting and redrafting. I may use a version of yours, if that’s OK?

My constituency is a marginal with a (dreadful) Tory as MP. He has consistently voted against anything that is pro-Women’s rights. I don’t hold out any hope that he will support this. However, I have left the Labour Party over this issue. He might be interested to know that? (Here’s hoping)

We have a decent Labour female candidate in my constituency who lost by a slither last time. I really supported her hugely last election, as she is also not a batshit Momentum-bot. But alas, she is already showing symptoms of trans-sleep-walking.

Worth a shot, though!

@truscum

I think your account will have been reported to Facebook on mass, leftists probably had an organised flagging of it. As someone on the political right (so I’m told) I can promise you that you will have to get used to this if you want to disagree with the left openly. They don’t do debate anymore, they just seek to shut their opponents down and deny them free speech. While most people would see that as a fairly despicable thing to do they will probably feel quite justified in doing what they are doing. They probably regard a petition like this as a hate crime and might lobby the government to make posting such petitions a criminal offence. But I think that was always where hate crime laws we’re going to end up - criminalising wrong think based on the subjective feelings of those with the power to decide what thoughts are ok and which are not.

"Scary mummy " on fb has just done a page about transgender kids - so so so many women posting encouragement of acceptance and letting kids choose... I'm scared how quickly this narratyive has been bought.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 14/03/2018 21:25

It's the word "choose" which is so bewildering...

HawkeyeInConfusion · 14/03/2018 21:28

A poster on the feminist board posted this link:
