This is the petition asking the government to consult with women on the proposals to enshrine gender identity in law.

We need a second thread before this one fills up!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 16/03/2018 05:12

Signed

ThirdVerseSameAsTheFirst · 16/03/2018 11:08

Just peaked my exh.

He's signing.

niceberg · 16/03/2018 11:13

Signed, and sent it on to my elderly parents. They are on their way up to the peak after discussions at the weekend so I hope they will also sign.

Another 7 have signed in the 10 mins since I did. Let's keep it moving.

TheEmperorHasNoClothesOn · 16/03/2018 12:30

Have peak transed DM, DMIL & DFIL since I signed this (they have all signed and are spreading the word).

Most people have no idea about this issue but as soon as you talk to them about it they are horrified that women's discussions & concerns are being shut down.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/03/2018 13:06

I think that's a huge part of the problem, Emperor So many people who would see this for what it is in an instant, just not having it flagged up properly?

ThirdVerseSameAsTheFirst · 16/03/2018 13:18

Yes. My exh got it straight away. He'd never heard of it and he's quite poitically inclined.

Elendon · 16/03/2018 15:00

Over half way there.

Women will not be silenced.

Elendon · 16/03/2018 15:06

This is a good post about a trans woman on self Id and the Labour Party.

It really is worth a read. I've shared on Facebook.

www.counterfire.org/articles/opinion/19538-as-a-trans-woman-this-is-the-unity-i-want-to-see

Elendon · 16/03/2018 15:08

I hope Kristina doesn't mind me quoting from the link:

One ‘right’ we don’t have is to distort or ignore biology to insist we belong to a category from which our genes and our socialisation irrevocably exclude us. I can never experience female biology or all those related issues which have been at the heart of the discrimination and struggles women face. Neither can I ever know the profound and foundational experience of girlhood socialisation which forms the mental and emotional prism through which adult women synthesise their experiences. To pretend these things don’t matter is to obliterate the biological reality of sex and undermine the unique experiences and rights of women. If you’re blind to sex, blindness to sexism follows as a recent tweet by young Labour transwoman, Lily Madigan confirms. “asking for women’s spaces free from trans women (a right enshrined in the Equality Act) is transphobic” according to her.

Orphangirl · 16/03/2018 15:49

The Scottish Govt consulted with a range of women's organisations prior to launching the consultation which closed on 1st March. Unfortunately those were all cool with the direction of travel. So not saying that this petition is a waste of time but if the Westminster govt does consult, they'll likely just go to the usual suspects who I'd argue are very far from representing the views of the mass of women. Sorry, feeling a bit depressed today...

Ereshkigal · 16/03/2018 15:56

We need to make them aware that this is not acceptable for a consultation on something which affects all women. They need to carry out focus groups, telephone surveys etc and frame the questions fairly.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 16/03/2018 17:42

After the House of Commons meeting I stayed at the Union Jack Club in Waterloo. This is a cheap hotel for current and ex members of the armed forces. There is a fantastic patio at the back for smokers where everyone has a bit of a chat. I told a couple of ex squaddies what is going on and you can guess the reactions. One really very normal guy in his 50s was saying he has two gay brothers, but no, men can't be women. They were adamant, no-one believes it.

Its a smaller bubble than people think.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/03/2018 17:55

Well, that's a ray of light in the darkness, Mouthtrousers.

KennDodd · 16/03/2018 17:58

Saw this great petition while signing as well!

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208776

Sorry, not relevant to thread though.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/03/2018 18:02

I have just signed.

I am trying to have these discussions in RL, but have to be careful. I work in charity sector and there is fear of not being seen as inclusive.

SweetGrapes · 16/03/2018 18:04

Just signed that too @KennDodd

Have signed quite a few in the last days Smile

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/03/2018 18:08

Yes, thanks for linking that, Kenn

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 16/03/2018 18:14

'It's a smaller bubble '

It is amongst adults for sure.

However, anyone under 25 that went to university or any kids at school now - have unfortunately been indoctrinated into the gender is more relevant than sex.

It really has been going on under the radar.

drinkswineoutofamug · 16/03/2018 18:57

We need another thread

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 16/03/2018 19:19

My 2 DSs who are under 25 heard that and don't believe it, and they think non binaries are just people trying to seem interesting. There are some in the Halls my youngest is in.

He had a lesbian friend who was chest binding which upset him, cos she was in so much pain.

They are not all suckered into this.

TheGoldenBough · 16/03/2018 19:46

I haven't been brave enough to share on FB but I have messaged a few people and about 5 have got back to say they've signed so far.

TheHallouminati · 17/03/2018 09:53

@yesitsadebate I can't find the follow up thread to your slef id as a man one. Could I have a link please? Tia

MrsBodger · 17/03/2018 10:15
