Relevant section:

Meanwhile, a woman who criticised a transgender charity on Twitter has been questioned under caution by police and told she will be arrested if she tries to leave the country. Kellie-Jay Keen- Minshull accused the group Mermaids of “suppressing free speech”.

She had accused Mermaids, which calls for children to be allowed irreversible sex-change treatment the NHS currently prohibits, of “prey[ing]” on gay teenagers and of “mass child abuse”. Mermaids declined to comment.

Izzy I was just thinking pretty much the same. I was trying to think when I last saw a copper on the streets. It was just under a year ago, and that was in Manchester just after the Arena bombing. I never see police, but they can find the resources for this

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2018 11:46

The CPS decide the likelihood of a conviction and whether it is in the public interest to pursue.

Anyone think that this is going to get very far in the courts?

After the courts already have legal precedent to look at re: mermaids.

The law is about reason not feelings. It favours anyone with a rational argument.

The barrier here is the lack of money to take things to court by feminists in more cases. The threat of the law and the cost of the legal process is the weapon. Not the actual law. Not yet at least.

In terms of freedom of speech, there is LOTS of money behind defending that in the UK. Politically its a sore point for the right with regard to universities.

When it comes to it, if pitched right, the money to defend WILL appear.

Yes feminists will be used by male chauvinist elites for their own agenda and thats the bitter pill, but the force of the right pulls the political debate from the far left towards the centre. And that is how it needs to be viewed.

I'm sure this will end up in a dead end. Its no consolidation for posie who is facing it, but at the same time we do need to go through this process.

HairyBallTheorem · 11/03/2018 11:51

Many years ago, when I was a student, one of my friends was raped. She should have been the "perfect victim" from a prosecutor's point of view - stranger rape, pulled off her bike on the way home from lectures dressed in a below-the-knee tweed skirt and winter coat, no sexual history. The police "no-crimed" her report (I sat in on the interview in which they did this) on the grounds that they thought she was so upset she wouldn't stand up to cross-examination.

Yet South Yorkshire Police think they have grounds to persecute Posie in this way?

The world has truly gone mad.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/03/2018 11:52

Orwellian dreamscape is what it is all right.

I will also donate. I have never been to any sort of demonstration in my very long life but if this gets to court, I will be outside demonstrating and I hope that other mumsnetters will too.

Enough now. This has to stop before it's too late.

Can someone tweet A Gilligan to bring to his attention what has been revealed here re WYPs Hate Crime Officer being besties with SGs son, please?

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 11:56

If I took my daughter abroad for FGM I would rightly be arrested for abuse in this country.

If Itake my son abroad and get im breast implants and have penis cut off and inverted, I'm what? A fucking inspiration?

They do advocate wide spread abuse and that woman has abused her own child and should be in jail for doing so. And I say that knowing full well that MN have to give up names if asked to do so Happy to start a Spartacus thread saying so too.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/03/2018 11:59

more balls than Millwall

Love this

posie Thanks

HairyBallTheorem · 11/03/2018 12:00

For those who are interested here is Andrew Gilligan's twitter feed

I recommend searching the page for "I see Mesmac's @PhilMitchell83 is denying having been warned by the police. Perhaps this might jog his memory..." then following the thread of tweets upwards from there.

I've copied and pasted Gilligan's tweets from 4th March below. Basically, SYP seem loath to spend their time on pursuing child abusers, but are happy to harass women exercising their right to free speech:

Accusations of sexual misconduct at the sexual health charity which allowed its staff to have sex with service users they met through work

The Charity Commission is in "ongoing engagement" with Mesmac after one of its former trustees was recently convicted of multiple counts of child sex abuse

Leeds council has referred two cases involving Mesmac to West Yorkshire police for investigation...police have not pursued the complaints but refused to tell me what investigation they did or whether they even contacted the complainants. WY Police work with and have funded Mesmac

In October, Mesmac's chief executive told me he was unaware of any case where a staff member had sex with a client. Yesterday, Mesmac admitted that there was at least one case.

As early as 2009 at least three Mesmac trustees, including the then chair, resigned "en bloc" because of their concern about its "unaccaptable" conduct policy and lack of professionalism, one of those who resigned says. (Mesmac denies they resigned over the conduct policy.)

Brian Mynott, a local therapist who works with abuse victims, says he has spoken to a further three people who claimed to have been sexually harassed or asked for sex by Mesmac staff when they went there for help.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 11/03/2018 12:01

Minger that's an interesting comparison with FGM - really, what is the difference? Both are based on beliefs rather than hard fact and done to a child before they reach an age at which they can legally decide for themselves.

SuitedandBooted · 11/03/2018 12:02

Slight derail.

I'm a Swim Team Manager, so I get sent off on various Safe Guarding courses etc, so lots of advice about how I should be wary about being alone in a room with a child etc - but apparently I can now send the girls into a changing room with blokes!!

Have a look at the recent advice from Swim England, (and Stonewall) here;
www.swimming.org/swimengland/guide-engaging-trans-people-swimming/

Can anyone with good knowledge of the Equality Act point me towards the relevant parts that challenge this advice?

I'm sure I read somewhere that organisations have to carry out an impact assessment ie -consider how changes will affect the users of the service. Women from certain cultural background can NEVER share with men, so they are effectively being discriminated against. Similarly, many other women will not be comfortable, and they will no longer swim or do other sports. There is also the matter of physical advantage in races, and sport generally - will this put girls off?

I am aiming to get up in the next meeting and address the room, Shock so I want to be sure of my legal ground. I think pushing the legal/discrimination angle is a better way forward in this instance, and shuts down the TERF slurs (a little!)

hackmum · 11/03/2018 12:03

I will also donate, though I'd really hope there's a lawyer who's prepared to take on the case pro bono.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 11/03/2018 12:05

And posie Flowers I just can't believe this could happen in this country.

Catabogus · 11/03/2018 12:09

Good luck Posie. This is shocking.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 11/03/2018 12:26

Poise Flowers 🙏🏻 thank you

HairyBallTheorem · 11/03/2018 12:27

Sorry - apologies - it's WYP involved (or not involved) in the Mesmac case, not SYP.

But the fact remains that there seem to be police officers more interested in harassing women than actually doing their jobs.

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 12:28

@suitedandbooted there have been two very interesting threads regarding swim ENgland's guidlines if you are a regular on MN? I'll find them for you

Fairyflaps · 11/03/2018 12:34

@Suitedandbooted also have a look at Datun's post about how the equality act exemptions can be used in these situations.

TheChampagneGalop · 11/03/2018 12:55

Completely dystopian Shock Bloody hell, Posie, best of luck!!
Love the More balls than Millwall slogan though Grin
MN women are awesome Flowers

TheRollingCrone · 11/03/2018 12:58

So shocked Posie - def in for a crowd funder & support at court if it comes to that.

I went and gave a very bad talk for a group who are fielding an independent candidate at May's council elections. They are formalising their 'stance' but they were concerned at what I had to say (I don't do things like this -I'm a middle aged, not well educated, low waged, single mum of 1 - I don't do things like this!) they've asked me to write a letter outlining the issues.

What has happened to Posie give me pause for thought. But I will not let women and kids be thrown under a bus without standing up.

You all and the women on twitter have taught me all I know Flowers
I always wanted a sister - feel like I, ve got 1000's now.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/03/2018 13:00

It's utterly shocking Posie, but we have your back.

Let us know if you need funding

Flowers
LangCleg · 11/03/2018 13:02

I don’t wish the stress and pressure on anyone but I must admit I believe we need court cases. We need this ideology to enter the cold light of day.

I also think this. And, because family court proceedings are, quite rightly, private, it's going to have to be over things like this.

DaisyDrip · 11/03/2018 13:05

I wasn't going to post on here again as I felt/feel so unwelcome due to my political views. However, sometimes you have to put things aside and this is one of those times. Posie I will keep reading and if I see you need help with legal fees and set up a crowdfunder, you can count on my full support.
