Relevant section:

Meanwhile, a woman who criticised a transgender charity on Twitter has been questioned under caution by police and told she will be arrested if she tries to leave the country. Kellie-Jay Keen- Minshull accused the group Mermaids of “suppressing free speech”.

She had accused Mermaids, which calls for children to be allowed irreversible sex-change treatment the NHS currently prohibits, of “prey[ing]” on gay teenagers and of “mass child abuse”. Mermaids declined to comment.

It all reminds me a bit of Camila Batmanghelidjh and Kids Company. People had concerns for years that were ignored and shut down before proper investigations were eventually done.

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2018 08:26

The more Mermaids wail the quicker this sees the light of day imho.

SeaRabbit · 11/03/2018 08:28

I've just read the Times article so popped in here to post just how scary it all is, knowing there would be a thread.

Patodp · 11/03/2018 08:30

Someone will take Mermaids to court. It's a ticking time bomb, the amount of childen they've damaged with their total affirmation approach.

Time is on our side. Mermaids will collapse into ruin, trans activism will go out of fashion.
Women will rise.

JennyHolzersGhost · 11/03/2018 08:31

I don’t understand why the police would tell someone not to leave the country. Can someone explain that bit to me please?

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2018 08:35

Is it formal procedure for any police caution?

OvaHere · 11/03/2018 08:36

I suppose if you are a person of interest in any investigation for any reason it might be standard to be asked to not leave the country. Just a guess.

Fairyflaps · 11/03/2018 08:38

RedToothBrush even if Kellie-Jay’s comments about Mermaids had been defamatory, libel is AFAIK a civil matter in England, so that does not explain or justify the police interviewing her under caution.

Iminthecclubnow · 11/03/2018 08:40

The same Mermaids who produced this?

Nope, nothing here to be critical of at all....

How can anyone be accused of accusing someone of 'suppressing free speech'. Surely the act of accusing them, suppresses free speech? Thus proving that they are suppressing free speech?

Kokeshi123 · 11/03/2018 08:45

Which police force is this? Does anyone know?

I just googled the name "Kellie-Jay Keen" but could not find out.

pisacake · 11/03/2018 08:46

"Has she phrased in a way which libels? "

The police have no jurisdiction, not one single shred over libel.

They will have gone for 'threatening communication' or similar. There are a few offences they can use, it's quite broad really.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:50

Hello.

It's me.

Yes, I was interviewed under caution. 40 minute interview.

QueenLaBeefah · 11/03/2018 08:51

Have you got good legal representation.

I'm shocked at this because surely it's a civil matter.

Fairyflaps · 11/03/2018 08:52

therealposieparker under what grounds? Have you been charged?

Datun · 11/03/2018 08:52

Oh dear Lord. That gender spectrum!

As if you need any more confirmation that this is ALL about stereotypes.

What is wrong with them?

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:52

The officer in our second call was asked what "wanted" meant.

He said "if you try to leave the country you'll be arrested, if you are caught speeding you'll be arrested and blah blah.... if we send local enforcement to your home to arrest you then you'll have to wait in the cells until we can come down and interview you"

Terfmore · 11/03/2018 08:53

One of the aims of Mermaids is to bring court cases against people who they see as transphobic. Probably not a good idea to directly accuse them of child abuse.
The basic facts about them are concerning enough and although in the public domain not really reported on.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:53

I haven't been charged, I'm waiting for the CPS to charge me or not.
Malicious comms
Nuisance
Public order
and a little hate crime for calling Janet Mock "Mr".

Datun · 11/03/2018 08:53

Come down from where? Is this not your local police force?

AskBasil · 11/03/2018 08:54

I hope Kellie-Jay makes a complaint to the IPCC when the CPS throw the case back at South Yorkshire Police with a "WTF" response.

South Yorkshire police who were a total fuck up with Hillsborough, who failed to bother to look for the Yorkshire ripper because they didn't give a shit that abused, prostituted women were being horribly murdered, who fabricated witness statements about the battle of Orgreave, who allowed grooming gangs to flourish in Rochdale because their attitudes to working class girls were not a million miles from the attitudes of the grooming gangs themselves.

And yet the fuckers have time to try and intimidate women into silence about an organisation which is clearly dysfunctional and should be shut down. Who was responsible for the decision to spend public money on pursuing a political agenda on behalf of Mermaids? What is the relationship between SYP and the lunatic who runs Mermaids? It's quite clear what the aim is here from Mermaids' POV: it's to get a woman to be cautioned for saying something most sane people agree with on Twitter, in order to stop anyone else saying it. What's less clear, is whether the SYP are colluding in this aim or are just allowing themselves to be used by a dodgy political lobby. Whichever it is, I hope there's a thorough investigation.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:54

I think convincing children that they should start a course of action that directly leads to sterilisation is abuse.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:55

The two police officers could have referred the interview to local officers but chose not to, then spent a night in a hotel before the interview.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 08:56

The police force are West Yorkshire... those of "who gives a shit about trafficked girls" fame.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 11/03/2018 08:57

Why are the transactivists (including Mermaids) too dim to realise that the more they try to shut down discussion on this, the more people are going to talk about it? That the best way for an idea to flourish is to drive it underground?
