I've had it with Lush

Sick of their virtue signalling. I've always admired their eco efforts and animal welfare stuff as there was an obvious connection but over the years they've got increasing more irritating and seem to be jumping on any topic which seems trendy.

I want to buy soap. Not subscribe to their politics. This for me was the last straw.

I usually by a few things in my local branch at least every couple of weeks. Not any more. I had no idea about their dubious activites with staff either. Thanks to posters for bringing this to my attention

TERFousBreakdown

There was a campaign to fund the legal aid of Guantanamo Bay detainees. I disagreed politically and was told it was non negotiable and I was welcome to resign. I didn't because I was pregnant and needed the job. They secured the release of a prisoner who was then implicated in UK terrorism. I will try and find details but it was subject to a press injunction at the time.

LUSH are very lucky that their workforce is so very young and impressionable.

PositivelyPERF · 17/02/2018 19:42

Funny how it’s always women in the window, tied up or naked. Do they make a point of only hiring women?

Terftastic · 17/02/2018 20:05

I'd never seen that 'naked' or 'kisses' thing - I'm shocked. I actually spend so much of my time being shocked at the moment, it's a surprise my jaw is ever off the floor...

That guantanamo thing too... bloody hell. They seem to be keen to dabble in politics that are way above their understanding.

My DD loves the bath bombs, and frequently gets me and her friends Lush stuff for presents.

I've wondered about the glitter in them recently - is it environmentally friendly? Or does it drain into the ocean to be eaten by fish and enter our food chain?

hipsterfun · 17/02/2018 20:13

I was told in store their glitter isn’t the microplastic type. Just looked on the website and it’s synthetic mica. No idea whether that’s any better.

megletthesecond · 17/02/2018 20:14

yy thorny. You've nailed it with the "dear leader" comment. Used to drive me up the wall, I was old enough to not be impressed.

fishdogpancakes · 17/02/2018 20:19

Thank you for the insight Thorny

Terftastic I'm with you. Just as you think that's it, it cannot become anymore bizarre there's another slap in the face.

TERFousBreakdown · 17/02/2018 20:23

I disagreed politically and was told it was non negotiable and I was welcome to resign.

That's horrible, I'm sorry that happened to you!

It's also really unprofessional! The CEO of the company I work for has some fundamentally different political views than myself. Due to my visibility as of the few token women, he's well aware. He might be wrong about politics, but - to his credit - it's never held me or any of my fellow lefties back!

This alone is shameful enough!!!

RedToothBrush · 17/02/2018 20:48

How about printing off the TrendGenderTrend cover and slipping it into their windows or just leaving it on their displays.

FlopsyMcDoodle · 17/02/2018 20:54

When I went into Lish about a year ago they were selling charity lip balms. The charity they were raising money for was trying to find alternatives to the South Devon Bypass. A road that construction started on 4 years ago and has now been open for over a year.

They have also supported an animal rights charity that actively campaigns against CRUK and CRUK at the same time.

They do a lot of virtue signalling and fuck all else. Nice solid shampoo though.

brizzledrizzle · 17/02/2018 20:59

Lush is beginning to sound like the retail equivalent of the DPRK.

OvaHere · 17/02/2018 21:02

The twitter thread is good. Lots of virtue signalling but a lot of pushback also. I hope it's given Lush pause for thought bet it hasn't

IfNot · 17/02/2018 21:03

Noooo!!! I love their "Celestial" cream! I knew nothing about them as a company though...
Bye bye Lush.

anothernetter · 17/02/2018 21:08

To be honest I've always hated their products. They stink. Someone bought me a hand treatment from there once and I used it on my hands which were very dry after having my baby - the product irritated my hands and made them sting - probably the amount of fragrance added to them. This trans bullshit is absolutely ridiculous. I hope they lose a lot of custom over it. Perhaps they ought to put more focus into treating their staff with a bit of respect instead of jumping on the latest bandwagon in their desperate attempt to appear trendy and attract young customers.

HairyBallTheorem · 17/02/2018 21:11

That Reddit thread, Upstart Shock

But it does have some brilliant comments:

"Dammit, Scotty, what's going on down there?"

"It's the brocialism, captain. It's overloading the warp core!"

colouringinagain · 17/02/2018 21:13

Seriously pissed off about this. Dd13 is a huge fan.

Have tweeted them for what it's worth Angry

TerfsUp · 17/02/2018 21:55

What about being an ally to women, protecting women’s sports & spaces?

We women are supposed to move over to make room for men and their feelz. What we need and want is of no importance.

brizzledrizzle · 17/02/2018 22:39

@colouringinagain me too, not that they will listen.

theaveragewife · 17/02/2018 23:04

Haven’t read the rest of the thread but....

Lush are the company that asked staff to turn up for work naked, to protest excess packaging

Are you kidding?? Shock they were taken to court in 2006 for not complying with packaging regulations!!!

I am sad...I loved Lush Sad looks like it’s ren and aromatherapy associates all the way from here.

loopsdefruit · 18/02/2018 00:28

I am not bothered by this at all, in fact I'll probably buy the product in support.

But I am genuinely interested, are all the people who are now going to boycott Lush planning on boycotting every company who comes out in support of the trans community? What if they all do?

This just seems like cutting of your nose to spite your face, especially if you really like some of their products. I get not buying this particular product and not having your money support that cause, but I don't think it'll be long before all companies are showing their support. Especially as Pride is coming up, and Pride includes trans people.

Everyonematters · 18/02/2018 00:28

They have also supported an animal rights charity that actively campaigns against CRUK and CRUK at the same time.

Ha ha ha. Maybe they will fund #WPUK as well as promoting trans ideology.

Everyonematters · 18/02/2018 00:32

People on this thread support women and children's rights as well as trans people loops. Have a look at woman's place for more information if you are interested.

loopsdefruit · 18/02/2018 00:38

Everyone that wasn't my question. You believe that trans rights infringe on women's rights, I do not, and I have read all the threads on here and all the links to all the websites.

Again, if you are going to boycott Lush over this single product (which is fine, I doubt they'll mind/notice) are you going to boycott every single company that supports trans rights? Will you quit your job if your employer supports trans rights? Pull your children out of school? Stop shopping in supermarkets?

Where do you draw the line? Because it just seems really silly to me to stop buying products that you like and that work well for you, just because the company also makes a product you don't want to buy.

HeyRoly · 18/02/2018 00:41

Lush have a loooong history of pig headed campaigns. I remember one when they goaded Anita Roddick for selling The Body Shop to L'Oreal? I also remember how badly they treated front line staff who complained about the shop doors always having to be open in all weathers.

Products are fab but management, HR and internal comms are shocking. They could do so much better.

I'm pretty sure that Lush do not, and have never had, a HR department. Which is shocking when you think how big they are.
