I’ve learned that there are some brilliant, learned and compassionate people out there, who come at this from all angles. One (purely anecdotal) observation is that the diversity of opinions within the trans-gender population is not remotely reflected in the bit of this conversation most visible at Westminster. The trans community’s opinions are not as homogenous as some reporting and discussion suggest. So here’s a tip for hacks covering this: don’t just book Paris Lees or talk about Lilly Madigan. Ask Kristina Harrison what she thinks. Or Tara Hewitt. Or lots of other people. The same goes for the ‘radical’ feminist side of this: there’s more to it than Germaine Greer. (Though for some media outlets that really should know better, having any voice from that side of the conversation at all would be an improvement.)

And has come out with some worrying Anti-Semitic stuff.

What was this and in which context?

Sorry for asking and veering a tad off-topic, it's just: this is about as loaded a subject as 'transphobia', in that, depending on whom you ask, what it includes it ranges from Jewish world conspiracy to 'but I kind of believe it might be quite nice if those poor Palestinians had somewhere to live, too ... maybe!'

No tolerance for either the former or anyone who classifies the latter as anything approaching anti-semitism here.

Terftastic · 12/02/2018 20:45

"Terfragette" is excellent though.

I agree this goes across all parties. Jennifer won't have a word said against Corbyn, and won't give the rw press the time of day. I do admire her though - she stuck her neck on the line for this - for women - and the Labour Party stamped on it.

I can't vote labour while this issue is unresolved, and self ID is still on the table.

#Terfragette

Fucking utterly wonderful!

Who can we credit with this? Hail that woman!

C19/20 essentialism: you are a woman therefore you must like X
C21 essentialism: you like X therefore you are a woman
Radical feminism: like whatever the fuck you like

TERFousBreakdown · 12/02/2018 21:13

@flapsDentata, thanks a bunch! I know where I'm at on this one now: hyperbolic, possibly in poor taste, very problematic for gentiles, bog-standard, if somewhat intentionally provocative, for Jewish critics of Zionism.

flapsDentata · 12/02/2018 21:17

Problematic enough for me.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 13/02/2018 16:16

This is being discussed on Reddit, apparently we're all bigots.

Myunicornfliessideways · 13/02/2018 16:28

Yeah, not an original thought on Reddit.

Definitely like #Terfragette though.

meddie · 13/02/2018 16:34

Who gives a fuck what reddit thinks

Agerbilatemycardigan · 13/02/2018 16:36

Posted this on another thread but may as well put it here too...

TheGoldenBough · 13/02/2018 16:37

If the trans population is 0.1-0.5% of the population, as suggested by one of those men on reddit, how come.they are so over represented in women only roles, women' sport and winning women's awards?

Is it really because people want to be seen as right on or because they think they're being supportive or because they're scared?

TheGoldenBough · 13/02/2018 16:39

That Labour boy child GrinGrinGrin

Agerbilatemycardigan · 13/02/2018 16:40

Maybe because they think that one of them is worth a thousand of us?

They're narcissistic and deluded enough.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 13/02/2018 16:40

That bit made me laugh too Golden

Lettucepray · 13/02/2018 16:45

#Terfragette.....I am going to use this everytime I engage with these numpty's!!!

RaininSummer · 13/02/2018 19:20

I presume (hope) the figures above are wrong as 0.1 or 0.5 would mean ten or fifty percent if the population was trans. Guessing it is 0.01-0.05.

RaininSummer · 13/02/2018 19:25

Apologies, I am a tit, mussed the percent sign. Phew. Thought the lunatics really had taken over the asylum.

bridgetbishop · 13/02/2018 19:27

Can someone explain what is wrong with being anti Zionist? I thought they were the people treating the Palestinians so appallingly? That's not anti-Semitism or anti Israeli. Many people in Israel don't even support them.

Is that what people mean by anti-semitism in Labour?

Destinysdaughter · 13/02/2018 19:47

Reddit thinks we have always been a “regressive pit of pearl- clutches”

Don’t fucking underestimate us!

Actually there’s a v interesting discussion on that link, worth a read, there are some pp with good views on there ( as well as the ones who think we’re all TERFS)

Lettucepray · 13/02/2018 19:48

bridgetbishop

No it's the people who USE Israel as sn excuse for anti semitism. Some people can see past the propaganda and recognise that the violence comes from BOTH sides.....nay some might say that Israel has offered MANY concessions over the years to the Palestinians which have been met with extreme violence.

GatoradeMeBitch · 13/02/2018 19:56

I cancelled my Labour membership and filled in the returning survey explaining why. It will probably be read and deleted by someone on work experience but I'm glad I sent it.
