I think India's protection of men is instinctive, because on one level India knows she's a man. (It's really, really hard not to write 'she.' I think I was far too easily moulded into being nice by society, what with being female.) She's simply protecting her tribe without stopping to consciously remember that, oops, they aren't her tribe.
That or she's attempting to be a handmaiden because it makes her feel more female to be a low-status, submissive person who considers men's feelings above hers at all costs.
I have to say, I went on Shon Faye's twitter. I know very little about Shon Faye but it struck me that Shon at least had tweeted things about how just because trans issues mattered to her, it didn't mean she and other women shouldn't shut up about all the other girls and women around the world living with other awful types oppression. I was quite shocked by the lack of narcissism and the consideration, tbh. I've gotten used to reading such awful things on there by TRA's.
