Sadly it looks as though I won’t make it tonight because of an impending work deadline that will keep me in the office until about midnight. Good luck to all who are going!
I’ll be very interested to hear full reports. One thing I keep coming back to is how annoyed I am that we have been forced into a largely reactive position, when feminism is also about spreading a very positive (and until recently fairly uncontroversial) message about gender not defining somebody or limiting what they can do or be. I keep wondering if what is needed (alongside immediate responses to the GRA) is a high profile positive campaign that doesn’t directly deal with trans issues but focuses on getting that message out to schools and the general public. About how being born a woman doesn’t mean you can’t do everything (and feel everything) a man does, and about how being born a man doesn’t mean you can’t wear dresses and make up and enter traditionally female professions.
I don’t know - it’s not really thought through, but I just feel as though we might need that more “stealth” approach of changing attitudes alongside the more urgent awareness raising of issues like the GRA.
