Women’s Aid considers employing self-declared transwomen [i.e. men] in women's shelters

The review of women’s refuges, which is not dependent on any government reform, was agreed last week by the board of the charity Women’s Aid, a federation that oversees more than 300 shelters.

Mary Mason, the board’s interim co-chairwoman, said: “We have agreed to start a review of our whole transgender policy, including the possibility of employment for self-declared transgender women without a gender recognition certificate.”

Describing it as “an extraordinarily difficult discussion,” Mason said the review, by Women’s Aid’s director of services, Nicki Norman, would take three to four months. Another board member, Sarah Forster, confirmed the move.

Where did the impetus come from? It shows yet another institution "getting ahead of the law", as a Labour MP would phrase it.

Amber Rudd just on Andrew Marr made some positive comments about the importance of women's safe spaces and the Equality Act allowing them.

I thought most of what she said was worrying - "Let's see how the Women's Aid review goes" - completely ignoring the anti-woman politicised and pressurised environment they're working in.

But she did unequivocally say that the Tories won't be removing the single sex exemptions in the Equality Act, which Maria Miller's report recommended. That's important. Vital, even. Because even if orgs like Women's Aid fold now, the exemptions still exist. Women will still be able to organise female-only spaces going forward - so we can make new services if we need to.

The Tories genuinely are beginning to move on this. Labour, I'm afraid, is a lost cause.

SquareDot · 04/02/2018 10:14

So what's to stop male abusers self-declaring themselves as women to get a free ticket into refuges so they continue the abuse? Confused

This is a load of bollocks!

Geronimoleapinglizards · 04/02/2018 10:16

This has really, really shocked me.

I am so takwn aback there's nothing else I can add right now.

I'm horrified

cromeyellow0 · 04/02/2018 10:19

In case it's of interest, I'm reposting this survey which shows the generational divide between women on this issue.

This is the future, ladies. We've lost.

The Scottish Greens loathe women, their top priority is the trans. When questioned, their odious leader said that his trans friendly policies have the backing of Scottish Women's Aid, Rape Crisis, Zero Tolerance and other women's groups.

I believe him. This is actual reality now. Men in skirts must be prioritised.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/02/2018 10:24

Men are not allowed in refuges. But if they put on a dress they are?

AdaColeman · 04/02/2018 10:24

Just when you think that it can't possibly get any worse.....
It suddenly does.

GirlScout72 · 04/02/2018 10:24

I confess this shit keeps me awake at night, the scale of the misogyny actually terrifies me, but WE HAVE NOT LOST. It ain't over til it's over.

However, we do need to ACT. In secret if necessary, but act we must.

PlonitbatPlonit · 04/02/2018 10:25

Woman's Place UK are holding meetings in Bristol (8 Feb) and Edinburgh (14 Feb) and two more planned. I am sure this will be a massive issue at those meetings and that there will be actions planned.

RunningWild12 · 04/02/2018 10:31

MorrisZapp Agree completely. I’m in Scotland too. Finding all this faux progressive virtue signalling from e erywhere quite oppressive. But there are many women against it. See the Women’s Place Uk event in Edinburgh on 14th Feb. Yes, I think we’ve lost the self id battle, but we can still fight for sex as a protected characteristic to mean something in the form of whatever exemptions we can get.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 04/02/2018 10:32

I don't want to link as the author will trace it back but in Scotland there's a website called 1000 flowers (word rather than digits) and their latest post is about taking up refuge workers' time hassling them about trans inclusion.
I think partly because criticism of self declaration centres around women's shelters (as women there are so vulnerable) tras then focus hugely on refuges and pressure them.

RunningWild12 · 04/02/2018 10:35

LangCleg Agree 100%. People with gender studies qualifications on government funded salaries calling themselves professional feminists. Have no understanding of the activism of women which brought these services into being. Now they’re just part of the corporate charity sector. I’m sure they all meet and congratulate each other on their progressiveness at various conferences and dinners. Back to grassroots activism to make real change.

NaturalWoman · 04/02/2018 10:39

cromeyellow0 I think the issue with things like this is that there is no clear definition on what 'part of a process to become a woman' means.

I'd imagine that the majority of people will assume it means they are receiving psychiatric interventions/support and are part way through a process of physically/hormonally transitioning. That they are talking about troubled people who have committed their lives to 'living as a woman' (whatever that means to them).

We read it and we know that it includes men who might not even bother having a shave and putting on a dress and who sits on his sofa in the evening, cock in hand, wanking to heterosexual porn. And worse.

Also, those figures are from 2016. I'd be interesting to see what a study conducted tomorrow would find.

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 10:41

With the benefit of hindsight you can trace the rot beginning to set in back when women's studies segued into gender studies in Higher Ed. I'll admit I never gave it much thought years back but here we are.

Myunicornfliessideways · 04/02/2018 10:48

their latest post is about taking up refuge workers' time hassling them about trans inclusion.

Utter disrespect for the service those people are providing. Utter disrespect for the women in need of those services. No, disrupt the service because it's not focused on TRAs, and unless it is its worthless. Pathological.

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 04/02/2018 10:50

Remember we may lose this battle, but the war for women’s rights is ages old and ongoing, and we won’t stop fighting that. We keep speaking up. We keep organising. We will never be bullied into silence.

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 10:51

One of my first peak trans moments years back was this person who kept Vancouver Rape Relief in litigation for years

CandyMelts · 04/02/2018 10:57

Oh ffs, I too will be stopping my regular donation and telling them why. Will look at alternatives to fund

This. Exactly.

Time to go local, fellow women. Find small, women-only orgs and charities in your local area. Support them. Make it clear WHY they are getting your cash. Volunteer if you can.

PracticallyTerfectInEveryWay · 04/02/2018 11:12

No, no, no. This is awful. I'm writing directly to them with a copy of the article about the sex offender in the Canadian refuge. I'll write to my MP again too.

They have the Equalities Act 2010 on their side. They must centre women's needs not the insane demands of a bunch of transcult bullies. NO PENISES IN WOMEN'S REFUGES.

The sky will not fall in if you say no to these utter wankers.

The law, honesty, and decent people support sex segregation in women's refuges!!

I am wondering if this is about MONEY. It usually is. I'm wondering if this funding led. Didn't something similar happen in Wearside and all four shelters closed because they said no?

GuardianLions · 04/02/2018 11:18

I am still reeling so haven't rtft.

But it is such a huge premeditated stitch-up.

Taking over Women's Studies in universities and making it Gender Studies
Filling a generation of minds with pomo bullshit and making entitled males feel like 'victims' of feminism.
Releasing these brainwashed fantasists into the world to undo every feminist achievement from the inside.

Mwaahahaha

I now have actual hate in my heart for all these brainwashed 'right on' idiots and their 'trans' antifeminist soldiers. I feel sick.
