Friends have written a letter saying "we demand that her identity as a woman is returned to her immediately".

Women in women's prisons don't get fucking straighteners or epilators either you ginormous self obsessed plonker.

Surely the Guardian have done the equivalent of correcting the chip wrappers though? I mean that article is yesterday's news now right? No one who had already read it is going to trawl through it again and notice the mealy mouthed attempt at actually including the facts. The Guardian need to draw attention to the changes and additions otherwise they are worthless.

An apology for their woeful journalistic standards might be good too.

BlindYeo · 28/01/2018 00:03

I've just been reading about Jenny Swift, one of the trans suicides linked to in the article. A quick search reveals this report:

It reports it as a crack cocaine fuelled attack which paramedic Darren Matthews described 'the worst stabbing I've seen during my time with the ambulance service'.

boatyardblues · 28/01/2018 00:11

This also from the article above about Swift’s attack on Flanagan:

During Mr Flanagan's inquest at Doncaster Coroners' Court, the court was told how Jennifer Swift, who was legally known as Jonathan Swift, stabbed dad-of-two, Eric Flanagan, numerous times to the face, chest and right arm before attacking him with a shovel some time between 5.30pm and 6pm on November 15.

That’s pretty dark, the use of the shovel after the frenzied stabbing.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/01/2018 00:19

You know, there must be some trans women in jail for theft, or prostitution, or some other crime that doesn't involve horrifying levels of violence, so it's interesting that TRAs only pick up on and defend the ones who're in the "obvious danger to society that should be in prison forever or they'll inevitably harm more people" category. Is it some sort of compulsion, to see how far they can push the public's willingness to swallow their shit and pretend it's delicious?

BlindYeo · 28/01/2018 00:26

I honestly just cannot understand the mentality of anyone that can't or won't see the risks of any change to the law that would allow each and every one of these dangerous criminals to self-ID their way into a women's prison.

Here's another one: Martin Eatough:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/transgender-woman-found-dead-cell-11266405
www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/hyndburn/oswaldtwistle/701502.Knifepoint_rapist_gets_life_sentence/

He raped a 15 year old girl. From the Lancashire Telegraph: "Simon Mintz, prosecuting, said the defendant grabbed her from behind, held a knife to her throat and marched her to wasteland near Sumner Street. He forced her to remove her clothes, performed a sex act on her, then raped her."

Two hours previously he'd attacked a 19 year old but she fought him off. Psychiatric report pinned him as being a serious risk to offend again.

Can you imagine, as a woman, being incarcerated with this character?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/01/2018 00:30

If they keep pushing forward with this at some point some desperate woman will kill herself in prison because it's the only way to get away from her terrifying cellmate, and that will be "transphobia" too.

BlindYeo · 28/01/2018 00:35

I wonder which way round it works, Angry. I'm no expert on prison but maybe if the worse your crime the more you are at risk from other prisoners working you over, perhaps you are more motivated to pretend to be transgender and get yourself moved. Also if you have committed a more violent crime you are going to be incarcerated with other more violent people. Maybe those who commit lesser crimes are in a low security prison with other less/non-violent criminals so feel safer even if they do consider themselves to be in the 'wrong' prison and so don't campaign to be moved.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/01/2018 00:41

I think it's more that there's a strong connection between fetishistic crossdressing and having violent tendencies. Something's wired wrong in these guys in a way that has nothing to do with "identity". There will be some opportunistic chancers taking advantage of the possibility of transfer if this continues, but if you look at the cases above they all had a crossdressing fetish long before they got to prison.

DarthArts · 28/01/2018 00:41

Does anyone know if an application to be in a women's prison by a POP (person of penis as I like to call them) has been successful?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/01/2018 00:47

The dude who knocked the bartender's teeth out, Tara whatsisname, was transferred, wasn't he?

boatyardblues · 28/01/2018 00:48

This sex offender was moved to a women’s prison and then had to be segregated after harrassing female inmates: www.google.co.uk/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4856268/amp/Transgender-rapist-moved-women-jail-segregated.html

BlindYeo · 28/01/2018 00:50

Well in an article here www.ibtimes.co.uk/transgender-prisoner-died-after-pulling-out-mass-trans-suicide-pact-1652291 about Swift's death, there is mention of a fellow trans prisoner called Paris Clarke (another Paris) "who is now an inmate at the female prison HMP New Hall in West Yorkshire" according to the article.

DarthArts · 28/01/2018 00:58

And people say we are being "hysterical" and scaremongering....wow.

BlindYeo · 28/01/2018 01:08

Well quite darth. These are the crimes as reported, not our hysteria.

Yes boat the shovel, utterly deranged.

Angry yes Tara was transferred to a women's prison after a week.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/01/2018 01:24

Public's patience may be starting to run out.

www.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/7tfodp/transgender_woman_in_male_prison_nightmare_on/

Which, again, why choose these particular guys? Why not champion someone more sympathetic?

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2018 01:33

This is what distresses me. Because politicians are unwilling to listen and TRAs are determined to have no debate, then whipping this up and exposing all the dirty corners and nasty stuff is the only way to make the point about why this is dangerous.

In doing so it really does put anyone trans, whether they be a TRA or trans who is anti-self id at risk.

The alternative is also putting them at risk through the GRA amendments anyway, but this really isn't at all necessary.

The backlash will be painful. No one 'wins'.

GuardianLions · 28/01/2018 01:40

Ha ha ha

"Yes lets just send paedophiles who claim to have age dysphoria to young offenders institutions"

flapsDentata · 28/01/2018 01:53

I’ve been tweeting about this media Transwashing of violent sexual criminals. This is appalling stuff. This is absolutely a disgusting betrayal. Im so shocked. The Guardian is utterly shameless. There’s a great piece in the Times today, about a teacher who won an appeal against accusations of “Transphobia” you dudes will love it.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/01/2018 08:04

I hope that the fact that this person's crimes specifically pertained to gaining access to women's safe spaces and violating that safety is not lost on anyone reviewing his request to be moved to a women's prison.

ALittleBitOfButter · 28/01/2018 08:04

That reddit thread is sickening.

Geronimoleapinglizards · 28/01/2018 08:50

I feel chilled reading about those crimes. They're abhorrent. I feel so betrayed by the Guardian for whipping up sympatgy for these people. I used to be an avid reader. I'm honestly not giving them a penny more of my money

LangCleg · 28/01/2018 09:50

Oh, I think the original showed plenty of skill, it's just that it was skill being put to nefarious purposes. The fact that the Guardian is consistently putting this spin on trans related stories isn't an accident, they know exactly what they're doing.

I'm also sure they know what they're doing as.

The original article was nothing less than a campaigning piece for this offender to be accommodated with the most vulnerable women in the country. The particular journalist has specific form with whitewashing trans offender articles and so does the Guardian generally (Lauren Jeska is another example).

The Guardian regularly minimises or misleads about the serious of crimes committed by trans perpetrators. And they barely ever mention the victims of the crimes committed by trans perpetrators. When do newspaper articles about criminals ever leave out the victims like this? FFS. It has to be deliberate.

I think that, if any of us have the time and patience, we should comb through all such Guardian articles going forwards and post here and on social media when they are inaccurate (as I'm sure all of them will be). It's the only way to stop it.

HairyBallTheorem · 28/01/2018 10:51

There is already an @peakguardian account and a #peakguardian hashtag, but they don't seem to be specific to trans issues, just more general Guardian nonsense.

Elsie2791 · 28/01/2018 13:59

The Guardian have now updated their report with the following.

"Dean has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and serving an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) after being convicted of more than 30 offences including repeated burglary and voyeurism. Her crimes included breaking into several homes and filming herself wearing underwear belonging to teenage girls. The judge at her trial said she engaged in “behaviour that anyone is bound to find chilling”."

I think the pressure Mark Townsend was under on Twitter, inc from Janice Turner is probably the reason.

What really makes me laugh is the comparison with Bobby Sands. Whatever you think of the IRA/Sinn Fein, Sands didn't starve himself to death for hair straighteners. And I reckon Dean will start eating soon, when the penny drops no one really cares.

Greensmurfterf · 28/01/2018 14:25

It's a pity you can't comment on the petition site. What are people thinking when signing it? I'm contacting my Labour MP tomorrow to tell here I'll never vote Labour again.
