Break it down for me?

TortiousTortoise · 20/01/2018 22:16

Hi all, I am fairly new to the discussion on the impact that transwomen are having on women generally and I want to more fully understand the issues (been trying to talk to my husband about it and am struggling to articulate it).

I feel so awkward writing about this as I definitely don't want to come across as sounding horrible about transpeople, I just want to understand.

Also there are a lot of acronyms being thrown about. Can anyone help me out?

The government consultation on the GRA is live and accepting submissions from the public.

Fair Play for Women have produced some excellent guidance on the consultation, here:

What an excellent thread. Datun, the thebewilderness, both on fire, as were many others.

Over two hundred comments of women talking, without interruption from the supporters of male supremacy. Delicious!

I've had a quick look and I don't think this has been linked.

So on another forum someone told me fairplayforwomen has links to a right wing group. Is this a common accusation?

heresyandwitchcraft · 14/08/2018 18:40

There are multiple accusations thrown at gender-critical groups. In this debate it is worth carefully considering all sorts of sources/voices/evidence and making your own mind up.

It’s almost as though they would do anything to discredit women.
Before you nail your colours to the mast with anything it is always worth researching who the big names are.

It’s well worth looking into how big pharma funds certain movements.

GColdtimer · 14/08/2018 19:38

I don't believe they have by the way. I just wondered if someone would say "oh yes that old chestnut, her is something that disproves it".

This fascinating article has some very interesting info about how lobby groups work.

This is a very good explanation of issues around the GRC.

I do wish I'd seen this forum when I first got into this. The fight is so furious on Twitter that a newby doesn't always feel like they can take up time asking the obvious!

Funny to think that I intended to stay a few weeks until Labour got the message and caved in re. AWL. They didn't .
Then I realised no one in power seems to be listening. And that the media seem to have either a TRA bias or a shut down of any debate.

I heard about children coming home from school bored that all they got told was gender, gender, gender! Or asking their mum if she ever thought she might be in the wrong body ?

Next things to crop up; Girl Guides and their complete disregard for safety at night, plus the advice that the parents don't need to know!

So many layers in this debate but the final thing to keep me here is the amount of abuse women get for stating biological fact. Actually for just the slightest dissent. Yes, some tweets are so vitriolic I feel sick we keep going because we are right.

We are fighting this together as women and never have I felt such conviction that the cause is just.

Yes, you drink more than is healthy and you sleep less but the victories when they come are glorious!

This article where a barrister breaks down the legal implications of the Gender Recognition Act and self-ID on women's spaces is fantastic:

manfridayuk.org/2018/08/22/is-everyone-really-wrong/

Sample passages:
It would be my strong contention that there is no misconception, and that the explanation given above demonstrates how acquisition of a legal sex under the GRA permits access to single sex spaces permitted within the EA. Indeed, Stephanie’s proposition (with which I agree) that “there is unlikely to ever be a scenario when a service provider could seek to enforce the single sex exemptions of the “EA” in respect of a “GRC” holder” rather contradicts her conclusion that the GRA does not permit access to such areas.

She also falls into the trap of assuming that feminists think with one mind on this topic. This is wrong; it is one of the most fragmented topics of the day.

She then makes the rather startling assertion that “hardly any of [the feminists] can cite credible research supporting their theory that humans can never change sex.” She will no doubt, as a lawyer, be familiar with the maxim “it is for he who asserts to prove.” If one is to assert that human beings can change sex, it is for that person to provide the credible research. A GRC supporting a legal fiction no more changes a person’s biological sex than a pilot’s licence permits them to actually fly; I note by way of remark that I have never seen cited any credible research that humans cannot fly.
