Labour Against Transphobia Facebook group

Lily Madigan and Aisling Musson are asking for 'screenshots and evidence of transphobic behaviour' so they can make Labour 'a truly safe space for all members regardless of their gender identity or lack thereof.' In other words, doxxing people so they can be thrown out of the party for gender-critical views.

The group write-up is:

A group formed to oppose the rising tide of Transphobia in the UK Labour Party and to seek to make the Party a truly safe space for all members regardless of their gender identity or lack thereof.

PLEASE READ THE PINNED POST

If you have screenshots and evidence of transphobic behaviour please put them in the google drive folder rather than offloading them straight into the group as it may otherwise be overwhelming and trans members should have the option to not have to look at upsetting comments.

Do not add anyone unless you are sure that they:

  1. Are a member of the Labour Party
  2. Believe the basis of gender is self-definition
  3. Think that transphobia is grounds for expulsion from the party
  4. Respect the autonomy of trans people to direct the fight against transphobia (I.e will not take decisions against the will of trans people)

If you are a trans and/or non binary person and you would like to be added to the secret group (trans/nb people only) please message lily madigan or aisling musson and we will add you.

Rules:

  • No advocacy for violence, threats of violence of other illegal acts (quite apart from the morality of it, please do not get this group shut down)
  • This is a not a discourse group. If you do not agree that transphobia is bad, that the Labour party has it and that we should fight it, this is not a group for you.
  • Be respectful. As far as possible, please always be friendly, respectful and comradely and treat others as you would wish to be treated.
-No members of other parties.
  • TERF is not a slur.

So where does that leave us?

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:07

What is the thing about Caroline Lucas, Maximum? I must have missed that.

Battleax · 24/01/2018 14:07

Well if that's accurate, it will have to go to court.

Seems they've ignored their own lawyers?

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:09

Hammer I think we need to keep getting the wider debate out into the mainstream media and shine the light on the bits that don't make sense. And the implications of some of the arguments. Particularly the more liberal media. You are doing fantastic work on this.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 14:13

The word we're dancing around here is "propaganda". Headline designed to imply a thing that they can't technically prove but we'll bury that a bit and try to spin things to give the impression that what we'd like to be true already is...

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:13

Who has confirmed though? And why are they not confirming until March?

MaximumVolume · 24/01/2018 14:13

chchchch on a very ranty TRA blog post someone linked to earlier, it seems that the (some) TRAs have Caroline Lucas pegged as a possible TERF, along with Jess Philips.

nauticant · 24/01/2018 14:13

I don't believe that TRAs really believe that they can menstruate (although some AGP men do enact faux-menstruation as part of the fetish - I'd say google it, except, um, don't). I don't think they believe half of the stuff they say.

The reason for this came clear to me when Lily Madigan said they could get pregnant. They don't believe it. No one else believes it. But it caused a fair number of self-ID opponents to wrestle with this nonsensical notion and spend time and effort having earnest debates. It's all about deflection and turning everything into wading through treacle.

JollyJuniper · 24/01/2018 14:14

At the bottom of the story it says:

"The position was clarified that trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate are welcome and encouraged to stand in AWS, as per the legislation."

Which suggests to me that for the moment labour are continuing to abide by equality legislation and only allowing trans women with a grc to apply. Which is not what the first part of the story says.

MaximumVolume · 24/01/2018 14:15

It was Bambabini's link at 12.26

LangCleg · 24/01/2018 14:20

I agree this Penis New obfuscation. But, as I've said a couple of times already on various threads, I suspect that the Labour Party have already broken the law with regard to AWS. I'd bet a pound to a penny none of the TIMs already selected to them have been asked for a birth certificate (the legal way of proving a GRC). And that means it's quite possible that there are already non-GRC-holding TIMs on various AWS.

I want to know whether there are or there aren't. It's important to know that Labour a) haven't already broken the law and b) aren't intending to continue to break it by not checking eligibility of TIMs applying to AWS now and in future.

Is there no way of using the crowdfund to check this?

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 24/01/2018 14:21

That story doesn't make any sense - either self-id TIMs are allowed on AWS or only those with a GRC, it cannot be both.

It claims two opposing views are true simultaneously. I'm sure there's a name for that...

Datun · 24/01/2018 14:21

It is understood that the party’s approach includes not turning away self-identifying trans women from all-women shortlists, though the party has refused repeated requests to explicitly say so.
This is because party officials are working on clearing up the wording of Labour’s policy on the issue, which will be revealed at the next NEC meeting in March.

The headline is deliberately misleading. Nothing's actually changed.

TheCopyist · 24/01/2018 14:21

@JollyJuniper Yep. The article's a mess

BeyondWW · 24/01/2018 14:26

”working on clearing up the wording”

...without circular logic, including no stereotypes and including both all XX women and all transwomen...

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:26

Thanks Maximum.

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:28

Lang Cleg I wonder if a freedom of information request might work for that?

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2018 14:30

That article looks like an attempt at saying 'we won!' and selling it to the readership, when the reality is its just spin on story where someone has had to make a political climbdown as its been pointed out what they were proposing was not possible.

Odd that.

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:31

Just checked and I think no.

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:31

Sorry no to the FOI possibility, not as a reaction to any other posts.

PlectrumElectrum · 24/01/2018 14:39

Anyone following Mayday4Women on twitter? She's just posted to say someone has been charged in connection with the alleged assault see what I did there?Wink at speakers corner.

Slight tangent to topic but just thought it worth posting here.Smile

Stories like that are used to light a fire under the ladder to make it difficult for people to do their climbing down.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 24/01/2018 15:15

Yes I follow Mayday4Women, it’s great news. Apparently he was accompanied by a group of TRAs when he went to the police station, who were chanting “free the wolf” - they’ll just turn him into some form of martyr.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 15:17

How very dainty and feminine.
