Lily Madigan and Aisling Musson are asking for 'screenshots and evidence of transphobic behaviour' so they can make Labour 'a truly safe space for all members regardless of their gender identity or lack thereof.' In other words, doxxing people so they can be thrown out of the party for gender-critical views.

The group write-up is:

A group formed to oppose the rising tide of Transphobia in the UK Labour Party and to seek to make the Party a truly safe space for all members regardless of their gender identity or lack thereof.

PLEASE READ THE PINNED POST

If you have screenshots and evidence of transphobic behaviour please put them in the google drive folder rather than offloading them straight into the group as it may otherwise be overwhelming and trans members should have the option to not have to look at upsetting comments.

Do not add anyone unless you are sure that they:

  1. Are a member of the Labour Party
  2. Believe the basis of gender is self-definition
  3. Think that transphobia is grounds for expulsion from the party
  4. Respect the autonomy of trans people to direct the fight against transphobia (I.e will not take decisions against the will of trans people)

If you are a trans and/or non binary person and you would like to be added to the secret group (trans/nb people only) please message lily madigan or aisling musson and we will add you.

Rules:

  • No advocacy for violence, threats of violence of other illegal acts (quite apart from the morality of it, please do not get this group shut down)
  • This is a not a discourse group. If you do not agree that transphobia is bad, that the Labour party has it and that we should fight it, this is not a group for you.
  • Be respectful. As far as possible, please always be friendly, respectful and comradely and treat others as you would wish to be treated.
-No members of other parties.
  • TERF is not a slur.

It took me a while to work out whether that link to the Labour get a grip on transphobia blog was an ironic pisstake or deadly serious.

pamish · 24/01/2018 13:06

I have seen sketched designs of a sort of reverse tampon, that fits in the neo-vagina and leaks blood.

I almost want that to be real.

@Toothbrush

It’s like a viz joke. It has made me cry with laughter. Is this not like intimidation? And this isn’t just a labour issue, the amount of women who aren’t political, or across parties, are now asking questions. What? They going to doxx every woman and man who asks questions, or says Can we not wait a minute people?

Urgh. Utter nonsense.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 24/01/2018 13:09

RedToothBrush

Period appropriation - seriously? To be honest, I've got to the stage now when I'm just laughing.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:11

There was a video on YT of a young woman showing trans women how to fake periods with tampons and all I could think was please for the love of god find a new hobby.

AbsintheFriends · 24/01/2018 13:16

Wow - those two articles. An illustration right there of the levels of intelligence on each side of this debate. (It seems the author of the transphobia one not only has a problem with women, but punctuation.)

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 24/01/2018 13:18

They can have my period anytime.

I'll happily hand over the PMS, the cramps & the nausea. They can even have the bloody (literally bloody) sheet to deal with at 2am.

ThomasRichard · 24/01/2018 13:25

I finally have my meeting date with my Labour MP: next Friday morning. I’m also going to my branch meeting tonight. I have to take the DC so hopefully it won’t get too heated but if they aren’t already aware of what’s going on, they need to be.

FannyFanakapan · 24/01/2018 13:27

Monty Python predicted this...

Deadlylampshade · 24/01/2018 13:31

As funny as that article is it’s also quite shocking to see that that’s what they believe.

This idea that not validating someone is akin so exterminating them is really worrisome.

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:32

I call it the Tinkerbell Theory.

BeyondWW · 24/01/2018 13:34

Every time someone says they don’t believe in fairies, a fairy dies. Sums it up quite well, angry

MaximumVolume · 24/01/2018 13:42

Interesting about Caroline Lucas. Amelia Womack just followed me on Twitter, I'm being gently GC on there (I prefer the very level - headed approach as I think it works better and I'm clearly identifiable so a bit nervous of attracting too much attention.)

If the Greens can get this issue sorted then I might have to swap allegiance.

DonkeySkin · 24/01/2018 13:45

Lol (in a very grim way) at that pic Hammer.

Sometimes I wonder if the more extreme statements are a deliberate widening of the Overton Window. Years ago there might have been some opposition to the idea of transwomen with GRCs standing on all-women shortlists, because of their previous male socialisation, etc. Whatever your stance on that, it doesn't even get a look-in because we're all fire-fighting self-ID.

Yes, this is absolutely true, Astraia. I don't believe that TRAs really believe that they can menstruate (although some AGP men do enact faux-menstruation as part of the fetish - I'd say google it, except, um, don't). I don't think they believe half of the stuff they say. TIMs have moved the Overton Window so far, that people now genuinely believe it is hate speech to point out that they aren't literally female. How crazy is that? An obvious point of fact which everybody knows to be true (including TIMs themselves) is now unsayable in mainstream political discourse.

Saying obviously untrue things, and more importantly, coercing others to repeat them, is a classic totalitarian tactic, of course. Because it destabilises everyone's else sense of reality, and makes it harder for them to get their bearings on the truth, or believe anything anyone says. Saying that human males can menstruate, get pregnant, etc. is such an outrageous thing to claim that just hearing it repeated makes you feel like you've moved into a parallel universe, where the laws of physics and/or truth no longer apply. The confusion and intellectual exhaustion that such obvious lies, repeated endlessly, induce in people, is useful to those who don't want a calm and clear debate on the trans issue (i.e., TRAs).

And at a more visceral level I think the claim that TIMs can menstruate is just meant to humiliate women, to show their dominance over everything we have, and demonstrate that every aspect of female reality can be subordinated to male authority. In a sense, this claim is born of the same religio-cult impulse as the patriarchal reversals in so many creation myths, which ex-propriate the abilities of the female to the male, reversing reality so that we are born from their bodies (Eve being created from Adam's rib, Athena springing from the head of Zeus).

Deadlylampshade · 24/01/2018 13:48

It also goes to prove that they are not listening to our side of the argument at all.

Has anyone at any point written a single article that actually addresses the points we are trying to make.
I feel like I haven’t read a single thing that isn’t ‘we need everything we want because we are so likely to kill ourselves and because trans sex workers in South America get murdered we need to be biological woman and anyone who has a problem with that on any level is a bigot.’

I’d love to read an article outlining why self id doesn’t harm women and why are fears are unfounded.

GuardianLions · 24/01/2018 13:54

That Monty Python scene was disturbingly prescient - down to every detail!

AngryAttackKittens · 24/01/2018 13:57

My new theory is that Eric Idle had a time machine.

Are PN the only one running the story?

NotTerfNorCis · 24/01/2018 14:01

I think so. It's only just broken.

Hammerofthetwat · 24/01/2018 14:02

For utter fucks sake. They are breaking equality laws. I’m texting a pal and explaining it to him gently, he just said if they pull this, sue. We would win. Go fund me now. Cross party. Stop this misogyny.

TheCopyist · 24/01/2018 14:03

The Pink News story doesn't really support the way it's been headlined. It says that they 'understand' that the party accepts self-id but that they haven't explicitly said.

Chchchchangeabout · 24/01/2018 14:06

Yes Copyist is right. The headline doesn't match the reporting.

BeyondWW · 24/01/2018 14:06

Reading between the lines exercise...
"confirmed that self-identifying transgender women are welcome to apply for all-women shortlists"
...try putting the emphasis on apply

(As in perhaps, self ID people are welcome to apply, but unfortunately we will need a birth certificate saying F if they go to shortlist...)
