Good news, presumably?
I want to know where that leaves a certain womens officer, surely that ruling counts for every Labour post?

I doubt Lily can desist from selfies long enough to engage purposefully with a GRC process.

ATeardropExplodes · 18/01/2018 15:07

Let's hope there isn't a move to use the £16,000 to remove Lily Madigan from their position.

They would have to surely remove him from the position, as this is the official line.

gunsandbanjos · 18/01/2018 15:08

I didn’t know that, every day is a school day in this lunacy.

But a passport is an official document? Does it not have to represent you accurately?
I can’t remember if they use sex or gender on passports.

nauticant · 18/01/2018 15:10

They would have to surely remove him from the position, as this is the official line.

I'm not expecting consistency. Especially considering the bad PR of "martyr Lily".

Datun · 18/01/2018 15:13

Unless Lily applied for a GRC on her 18th birthday she will not be eligible.

She def wasn't eligible when she took the post, because two years had not elapsed since she was 18.

If she has a GRC, she needs to say so.

There are enough people who will look for proof.

Battleax · 18/01/2018 15:15

Mine says "sex: female" guns

Battleax · 18/01/2018 15:15

Well "Sex:F" to be accurate.

Beachcomber · 18/01/2018 15:17

Has anyone else noticed how increasingly there is a shift in language from;

transwoman - a noun

to

trans woman - an adjective + a noun

That space has been creeping in over time. It's a subtle detail but an important one. It's a linguistic acknowledgement that TIMs are women. Now there are small women, big women, white women, black women, trans women....
Whereas before we had women (big, small, black, white, etc) and transwomen.

I don't know if the people who write this stuff are doing it on purpose or if they are just not paying attention but it concerns me.

Datun · 18/01/2018 15:20

It's a deliberate attempt, I agree.

We need to start using TIM. Trans identified male.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 18/01/2018 15:20

passport is sex (not gender)

nauticant · 18/01/2018 15:22

Yes, some trans people make a fuss on twitter about the compound noun transwoman. They argue that it undermines their status as "women" if the compound noun becomes normal usage.

Batteriesallgone · 18/01/2018 15:26

My autocorrect puts the space in. I usually let it slip, hadn’t thought of its importance.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 18/01/2018 15:27

But the compound noun is the normal usage - they're the ones trying to change it!

Stopmakingsense · 18/01/2018 15:29

Yes you can change the sex on your passport with a deed poll and letter from your GP stating your intention to live as the opposite gender going forward.

Datun · 18/01/2018 15:30

This QC has retweeted the go fund me message.

He could probably do with some support if anyone is on Twitter

mobile.twitter.com/JolyonMaugham?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Stopmakingsense · 18/01/2018 15:32

Let's hope they are "sending support and solidarity to all members who have been faced abuse and been targeted recently". Not just to transwomen.

BeyondWW · 18/01/2018 15:36

He's been pounced on by the short-of-thinkers. :(

BeyondWW · 18/01/2018 15:37

He hasn't just retweeted, if the name is accurate he donated £100! Good man 👍

Deadlylampshade · 18/01/2018 15:37

That twitter feed makes my head hurt, non of the replies can say anything except that it mosgenders people and that it must prove that he doesn’t think trans women are women, as though that’s literally the worst crime in the world.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 18/01/2018 15:40

I've seen him in a lot of Brexit debates and he doesn't usually scare easilly. You don't get to QC level without being able to stand by a position.

Vicxy · 18/01/2018 15:42

If this is the case for AWS, surely it must be the case across the board? I guess Labour could just change the job description to remove the 'this position must be held by a woman' part in the womans officer spec.

I do think that they have taken legal advise and been told that they will lose. Hence this statement. I wonder if they were thinking it would all go away when they released this though? No, theres still a bit further to go yet.

Personally I still do not think that transwomen with a GRC should be on AWS as they are still not female. But as this challenge was about the utterly ridiculous 'self-ID' I get that this is a total win.

BelaLugosisShed · 18/01/2018 15:45

Tbh I’m really surprised there isn’t hell up on twitter from the TRAs, I really don’t think they will be pleased at the clarification, the fact that it’s legally correct will mean nothing to them. Perhaps it hasn’t filtered down to them yet.

Popchyk · 18/01/2018 15:45

I read the one comment where someone said that the language used suggested that transwomen are not female, which is a lie used to justify violence.

Muppets. Honestly.

LangCleg · 18/01/2018 16:02

Lily Madigan's election to Women's Officer is not related to AWS.

  1. AWS relates to prospective parliamentary candidates only and are permitted on the basis of EA 2010 section 104. So Labour can't lawfully have self-ID for shortlists for electoral candidates.

  2. Whether or not Labour can have self-ID for its womens officers, who aren't elected representatives (as in democratic UK elections, not elections within Labour) is a different issue.

  3. In Labour rules, to stand for the main CLP women's officer position you must be a woman. There is an internal Labour argument to have whether this means woman/GRC-holding TIM or means self-identifying woman.

  4. It probably doesn't mean self-identifying since the Young Labour rules specifically state self-identifying and this is different to the main rules.

  5. If the Labour Party decides to pursue self-ID as the basis for all dedicated women's posts and delegate places where it is currently lawful for them to do so, this is the point at which I think I will have to leave the party.
