She's taking a Twitter break for her mental health because of the level of abuse she's receiving. She's a teenage girl, FFS - and even if you think she's a teenage boy, in what world does a 19 year old deserve this amount of bullying?

I hope you're all fucking happy now.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace - did Jack Monroe comment on Lily Madigan? I haven't seen it, is it still online? Or did it get taken down?

catgirl1976 · 05/12/2017 14:43

Yup - It's like an episode of Black Mirror MrG

53rdWay · 05/12/2017 14:44

Didn't Lilly bully the previous jobholder out of her position with a campaign?

No - the woman Lily & pals bullied out of her role was Women’s Officer too, but in a different CLP.

SummatFishyEre · 05/12/2017 14:44

This poor girl might end up harming herself.

Lily is not a girl

Yellowrose87 · 05/12/2017 14:46

There's scrutiny and then there's bullying.

I don't know about the rape jokes. If she has behaved badly in the past can we not just focus on that? People don't have to be perfect to deserve our respect, and let's face it, most people would still be attacking her anyway no matter what she may or may not have done.

catgirl1976 · 05/12/2017 14:47

If your definition of behaving badly in the past includes threatening women yesterday afternoon Yellowrose then it's broader than mine. I put that in the category of behaving badly now.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/12/2017 14:47

Lily Madigan is a politically active adult, in a position of public office. The public have a right, indeed a duty, to question her appointment and performance.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 05/12/2017 14:48

I do have some sympathy for Lily because I think they are vulnerable and are being used to promote an agenda. I also think that if Lily does fail to cope with the role all their supporters will magically melt away leaving them very isolated.

However, due to that vulnerability I do not think Lily is suited to a political role. Politicians have to be able to cope when people disagree with them, it's part of the job. Lily has demonstrated a lack of aptitude for that.

Datun · 05/12/2017 14:49

Women are constantly threatened with violence, doxxing and rape. They are stalked, and physically attacked.

For pointing out biology.

Telling Lily he is a man and has no place representing women is not an attack.

nauticant · 05/12/2017 14:51

Like catgirl1976 says, I also think Lily is a vulnerable teenager. In this discussion I think the gender critical side will make more progress by stepping around anything that looks like abuse and makes sure it gets its fact straight. The facts speak for themselves, they are appalling enough.

This is a horrible situation that the grown ups in the Labour Party need to get involved with.

catgirl1976 Your post should be a manifesto for GC women.

Yellowrose87 · 05/12/2017 14:57

I meant the crap she's getting generally, not just that phrase, I picked that out because I was shocked someone would say that in 2017...

ArcheryAnnie · 05/12/2017 14:59

I'm shocked that in 2017 a teenage male who makes rape jokes and threats against women is lauded as a women's officer, while actual women are attacked and slandered, but that's 2017 for you.

catgirl1976 · 05/12/2017 15:00

Blush Harry

It's only what we are all thinking. And saying.

I just wish we were being heard.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 05/12/2017 15:01

Hi everyone,
As you know we are keen to let conversation flow as much as possible here on MN, so in order to facilitate that we have stepped in to remove a description that we felt went just a bit too far. Unfortunately, that means we also had to remove the many posts quoting the phrase and expressing their feelings about its use. We're sorry for the various conversational holes, they are a definite down side of quoting other people's posts, even to disagree with that has been said.

hipsterfun · 05/12/2017 15:01

If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that we’re all free to define and categorise whatever, however.

Sentimentallentil · 05/12/2017 15:03

I agree that I think Lily’s vulnerable, I also think they’ve never had to deal with robust criticism, they can’t handle it and should step down

hipsterfun · 05/12/2017 15:04

Hey, Annie, 2017, eh? Wine (There’s no champagne, can we make do with wine?)

Datun · 05/12/2017 15:05

Yellowrose87

People aren’t saying things like that on Twitter, to Lily.

I think what you have to remember is that women are being goaded beyond endurance.

What’s quite insane in 2017, is that a 19-year-old twit of a boy who makes misogynistic jokes and has shamefully abusive men as friends and supporters, is in a position where they represent women! On the basis of the fact that they say they are one.

It’s so much worse than a regular man representing women.

A man claiming all his misogyny and sexism are female traits because he has changed sex to that of a woman, is lunacy.

Sentimentallentil · 05/12/2017 15:05

Oooh my very first deletion, how naughty of me!

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 05/12/2017 15:06

I think there’s little doubt this person is profoundly unstable but as others have suggested, the solution is for the grown ups to get involved and remove him from the situation, not for others to refrain from pointing out the myriad respects in which his behaviour is offensive, damaging and dangerous.

SuburbanRhonda · 05/12/2017 15:07

Lily's friends, if they are true friends, should be advising them to step away from social media, lock down their accounts and concentrate on their mental health and their studies.

If my 19-year-old wasn’t able to work this out for himself I’d consider I’d done a pretty shit job of parenting him.

53rdWay · 05/12/2017 15:10

I don’t think Lily is able to distinguish between threats/bullying and disagreement. This to me would explain why Lily feels it appropriate to bully another Labour women’s officer out of her post, and to threaten gender critical Labour women on Facebook with revealing/using(?) their personal details - Lily sees it all as bullying and threats that need to be fought against.

This is I’m sure genuinely felt, but it’s also an illustration of why Lily should really not be in that position. Such a mindset is entirely inappropriate in that situation, and plus makes Lily feel constantly distressed and attacked every time someone disagrees. Not good for anybody, Lily included.

Yellowrose87 · 05/12/2017 15:11

Believe me, I know how far we still need to go for true equality but trans women are not our enemies. This is such a stupid thing to be tearing ourselves apart over.

I don't how this is worse than being represented by a "regular man"? The Jo Cox foundation are fine with it, they issued a statement.
