TRANS HEALTH MANIFESTO

I'm choking on my porridge. This Trans Health manifesto is...just...gosh.

I've only skim read it but they don't seem to have included Female Genital Mutilation on their list of bad things done to bodies. Interesting!

I would be prepared to declare myself a man in return for free waxing under anaesthetic.

IKR? I think you'd need to have a woman gender identity rather than man though after all women are totally hairless above the neck!? I think some people have a strange idea of what women's bodies are actually like. I'm hairier than some men I know.

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 11:43

That Edinburgh chapter tumblr is depressing. Apparently everything is socially constructed. Literally everything.

JassyRadlett · 21/09/2017 11:46

Literally everything.

Even leg hair, then? That's the only logical answer if other biology is a construct. In that case, why the free waxing?

I think you'd need to have a woman gender identity rather than man though after all women are totally hairless above the neck!?

They don't get to tell me what kind of man I want to be!!

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 11:47

And 'socially constructed' appears to mean something akin to 'a matter of personal choice' as opposed to being about structures within society.

So apparently rocks don't actually exist, we just choose to think that they do. Or some other utterly solipsistic nonsense.

Datun · 21/09/2017 11:49

So they're actually erasing themselves?

I don't get it.

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 11:49

clearly rules of logic are just a matter of choice too.

Tinycitrus · 21/09/2017 11:50

I want to be the kind of man who gets free leg waxing so he can wear sheer tights to work. (Sorry I'm being flippant -will stop derailing Grin)

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 11:50

I don't think it's possible to get it. Reading that tumblr is very difficult, because it's so full of enormous paradoxes.

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 11:54

I suspect that there are a few Edinburgh university students with too much time on their hands armed with big words they don't actually understand and an inability/unwillingness to recognise a coherent position behind that chapter's tumblr.

nauticant · 21/09/2017 12:02

The whole point is that you're not supposed to get it. The harder it is to get, the harder it is to argue against.

Tinycitrus · 21/09/2017 12:06

The harder it is to get, the harder it is to argue against.

Yy to that.

whoputthecatout · 21/09/2017 12:08

Jeez. Someone was really have a bad hair day.

whoputthecatout · 21/09/2017 12:09

having

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 21/09/2017 12:10

A quick scan down the central ATH twitter feed shows them supporting a protest outside the home office with views represented in the manifesto about prisons and prisoners, which suggests these are widespread and not limited to the Edinburgh chapter.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/09/2017 12:15

Are we really really sure the Edinburgh branch isn't someone having a laugh / false flag?

I just can't believe anyone could take that manifesto seriously, or believe what they were writing as they were writing with it. It is the stream of consciousness of an unwell person if it is real.

QueSera · 21/09/2017 12:20

It sounds totally deranged.

Found the lady penis on another thread

SentimentalLentil · 21/09/2017 12:27

This is what third wave intersectionalism does to your brain.
You start thinking EVERYTHING is about you.
They've probably seen a documentary about private prisons in America and got confused.
Because when everything has to relate to everything else you end up diluting everything down to nothing.

Zoloh · 21/09/2017 12:33

Well this is what happens when you apply lit-crit to politics. You kid yourself that everything is a story and all readings are valid. All you need to do is believe it into life. Derrida (and The Neverending Story :P) have a lot to answer for.

Of course we may interpret reality however we like. It's certainly true. One may believe whatever one likes about gravity, after all. However some interpretations may have a self-limiting quality...

ArbitraryName · 21/09/2017 12:37

And lots of things in the world will just go on existing - and affecting you - whether you choose to acknowledge their existence or not. Gravity is a very good example of something that affects your life whether you believe in it or not.

Poppyred85 · 21/09/2017 12:39

I've only just seen the thread, am still on the first page and only about halfway down the 'manifesto' but I had to stop to comment on:
"We are already taking hormones in this way, so this demand is simply that the danger of doing so is effectively mitigated."
Firstly, that would not mitigate the dangers. Secondly, this sounds a lot like the people who tell me that I should prescribe them Diazepam/Morphine/other addictive drug because either if I don't they'll have to buy it and if they come to harm it'll be my fault or that I should want to prescribe it for them to keep them safe. The answer to them, and to this is no. Just no.

Esker · 21/09/2017 12:53

'We need free, universal access to safe hormones & blockers at any age, the opportunity to decide our own doses'

I think there's a bit of a contradiction between 'safe' and 'decide our own doses' Confused No one is supposed to 'decide their own dose' of anything. Even over the counter stuff like paracetamol has dosing instructions which must not be exceeded!

SentimentalLentil · 21/09/2017 12:55

I blame Judith Butler for saying that sex is performative too.

Because obviously I just perform my periods.

Ttbb · 21/09/2017 13:00

I'm sorry, I couldn't get past the 'virginity tests in a Asian communities during the 70s was actually about us' bit. Come on. Yes trans people and the trans community has been on the receiving end or a lot of hate, abuse and discrimination but you don't have to make all of the worlds problems about you.

Lancelottie · 21/09/2017 13:02

Wish we could damn well stop performing periods. I've just dropped a weeping DD1 back to school after another fruitless GP appointment about her quite severe period pain (to which the attitude from school and GP seems to be 'you're a teenage girl, what do you expect?').
