Gender ID bill - Gender Critical To Do List

BetsyM00 · 02/08/2017 16:48

There seems to be quite a few of us with concerns about the proposed bill and who want to take some steps to voice opposition to it. I've pulled together some pertinent info and compiled a To Do List from threads on here, and elsewhere.

Please join in with any other suggestions.

I wrote to my MP about 4 weeks ago and haven't received a response. Is it likely to be because parliament is in recess - or am I being ignored?

cromeyellow0 · 30/08/2017 19:44

My MP (Anneliese Dodds, Labour) sent a reasonable response. I also wrote to Justine Greening, but she has yet to reply.

I'm so glad this thread has popped back up, I was going to make time to get stuck in to following the links and doing what I can, now I can jump straight in. Thankyou.

Got a reply today from my local MP. Didn't address any concerns or questions I raised in my letter. Obviously didnt even read it. Enclosed was a LBGTI manifesto and letter ended by directing me to the national LBGT survey. Im so angry I cant even articulate it.

Lots of MP letters seem to have this stock phrase:

"Attaining quick accessible and transparent legal gender recognitions helps transgender people live more comfortably and free from stigma and discrimination."

But how? How would having a GRC help someone live free from stigma and discrimination? No one offended by gender non-conforming is going to ask for a certificate and then say oh, that's ok then, now I won't judge you for your lifestyle choices.

The MN names to contact for joining the Facebook group are no longer admins for the group, so please do not contact them. I'll try to get new contact details.

Great thread! Thank you. I've only just seen it.

I've posted this on more recent threads, but this one seems to be becoming a collation of these documents, so here's my letter from Nick Gibb via my MP, Maria Caulfield.

@Lemonjello looks like you have a good MP there 👏

I'll be interested to see Nicola's response.

MacaroonMama · 15/09/2017 13:18

I wrote to my MP back in early July and have heard nothing yet, so have just rewritten asking to attend one of his surgeries as I understand he must be incredibly busy Wink

I am nervous! He is both Conservative and conservative; I wonder if either will work in my favour?

Hope so.

Does anyone know when the first reading etc will take place or has it already? I tried the bill tracker thing on the official website but it seems to be referring to the pre-General Election version.

Yes, Maria Miller's private bill was not progressed due to the General Election. The new proposals are vaguely given here. The LGBT consultation is due to close on 15 Oct and I'm sure I read on one of the MP reply letters that there will be a further, wider consultation, before any legislation changes are detailed.

I think we just have to wait and see, but it is important that our MPs are aware of our concerns and asking questions, and that law changes are not going to be as easy as some may hope.

Ah thanks BetsyM00
I will certainly go and see my MP then. I have also filled in the LGBT survey. I really do hope there are further consultations made. I know there was a lot of discussion on here that because the questioning on the survey was about gender vs sex, and lots of us are gender-critical, we felt we could answer it, but I would think lots of people not in the know will see LGBT and think it is not for them.

BetsyM00 · 15/09/2017 13:46

Excellent, Lemonjello thank you!

Just to clarify the details from that letter: To request being added to the mailing list for the consultation on reforming gender recognition law in Scotland, phone 0131 244 4955 or email [email protected]

I filled out the LGBT survey too MacaroonMama - after all, the trans umbrella includes any gender non-conforming people ie. nearly everyone. If nothing else, it sends a clear message that even the word transgender requires to be objectively defined in order to identify a material reality for a group of people to be covered by law. Good luck with that!

I'm just placemarking...

ghome1971 · 16/09/2017 10:26

Thanks for all the information and links.

SporadicSpartacus · 16/09/2017 17:41

This is a brilliant resource - thank you.

I've written to my MP (Barry Sheerman) today.

I've also filled out the LGBT survey - I'm apparently able to participate on 2 counts (as an actual LGB person, I'm bi, and also as one of those 'trans if you extend word definitions until they define precisely nothing any more' gender non conforming people). I am so eligible.

Beingrippedoff · 16/09/2017 18:22

Wow what a lot of information. Thanks betsy and others for all the links. I've emailed to be part of the consultation in Scotland and will also email my MP and MSP.
Scotland has a lot of gay/lesbian MSPs and MPs so I would hope they might give some more thought to it all than your average white, male middle class MP.
I'm not sure if this is a devolved issue -presume because there is a Scottish consultation going on then it is? Does anyone know?

Have asked the BBC why they aren't covering women's concerns and the no platforming of debate.
