Can we show our support for Jenni? I think she will be in for a kicking tomorrow

Thanks Jenni, for your bravery in speaking the truth

Hazey, I love your DDs!!

I, too, am JM and so is my (otherwise overly opinionated and usually wrong) DP!

htdef · 11/03/2017 15:27

I don't normally comment, I am trans FtM, and being trans is exactly what I am. Biologically I am female, I have the need to look male as literally every single time I see myself and I look female I get horrific jolts of shock. I don't see myself as a man, I don't feel like a man, I don't have any idea what that means to be honest. Also, in reality the issues I face in life are totally different to a man, lumping me in with them as though there is no difference is actually more harmful for me in my opinion.

I didn't read the whole of Jenni Murray's article, but I can't see what she said wrong. Trans people are trans, that isn't a bad thing, it's just the way it is surely?

booox · 11/03/2017 15:38

I agree ht. I think it's actually important to define as trans, as a trans person will have experiences that I have not experienced nor can wholly understand, as my life experience is so different.

Thank you for your perspective too.

Datun · 11/03/2017 15:42

htdef

That's what most people are saying. Transpeople have a distinct and separate identity to men and women. And completely different needs.

Unfortunately, a lot of transwomen vehemently disagree. Claiming to be actual women, and therefore not only changing the meaning of the word woman, but undermining or disregarding women's real lived experience.

And on top of that, deciding it is exclusionary or cissexist for women to talk about things that affect their biology as 'some women don't have that'.

It's male entitlement through and through.

booox · 11/03/2017 15:44

Regarding JM's impartiality, Cathy Newman has tweeted about Chimamamda Ngozi Adichie, that she could have "listened to her for hours" and that Chimamanda "gives JM backing on the trans politics row".

Surely she's partial? How is this ok and JM isn't? Or is it because it's C4?

KindDogsTail · 11/03/2017 15:44

Thank you for your perspective htdef

KatherinaMinola · 11/03/2017 16:04

C4 is basically a commercial broadcaster now, so can say what it likes (I think it still gets a little bit of public funding), whereas BBC is the public sector broadcaster, so bound by various clauses and memoranda.

htdef · 11/03/2017 16:15

I absolutely agree Datun, I also think the whole no platforming is disgusting. You can't resolve issues without discussion. I hate the behaviour. Some things are female only issues, it's just the way it is, and they need to be addressed, it is sexist not to. I also can't understand how people can't see that transitioning children and self-identification will actually be incredibly dangerous for trans people, but that's for another thread!

Thank you for contributing htdef

Here's Victoria Coren saying the BBC are hypocrites for trying to police what Jenni Murray had to say, and that she doesn't dare breathe a word against transgenderism herself otherwise she'll never work again....

Lulooo · 12/03/2017 04:35

Another one in support of Jenni Murray to. I am her.

RonaldMcDonald · 12/03/2017 04:52

I had a stern "warning" from the feminist board I am a member of today for hitting like on this.
This is apparently hate speech
I have never felt as bullied as I do to accept trans individuals a women without any question and to call myself ' cis'

Bambambini · 12/03/2017 07:37

Ronald - Don't they realise how facist (trying to think of a less OTT word) they are coming actoss as?

I was following the hoohaar surrounding the Toronto Uni Prof Jordan Peterson who has faced warnings from the uni, a torrent of abuse, has some students out protesting and shutting him down - for his stance on a new law forcing people to use a persons chosen pronoun or they could face being convicted of hate speech. There have been lots of articles, interviews on it and a really interesting debate where he was against 2 pro trans speakers.

NauticalDisaster · 12/03/2017 08:12

Did anyone ever receive a reply from the BBC re giving Libby Purves a warning for speaking out on a controversial subject? I sent a complaint but never heard back. I don't think the BBC applies their rules equally.

I have such a woman crush on Victoria Coren. I don't agree with everything she says, but this is spot on.

BigGreenOlives · 12/03/2017 09:48

From today's Sunday Times Roland White's Atticus column, p23. I'll post this on the other thread as well

Only the other day, I tried to tell my commissioning editor that I was considering a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway, but he ran screaming from the room before I got to the end of the sentence.

Smile This has me chuckling over my muesli.

BakeOffBiscuits · 12/03/2017 10:14

Rachel Johnson has done a fab piece in the DM, about the "madness" of "A "woman" being charged with rape and the courts not being allowed to know he is actually a man. She also mentions the "woman" on the run for rape but the description put out not mentioning the fact he is transgender. The proposed new "gender" law is also mentioned.

It's a real shame Rachel doesn't mention Jenni at all but apart from that it's a fab piece about how utterly ridiculous this is all becoming and how woman's rights and spaces are being invaded.

booox · 12/03/2017 10:16

Oh yes so there is Big.

I found this tweet hilarious:

"The hashtag #IStandwithJenni is actually really #twinsphobic. Seriously. Think about it
#WeStandwthJenni"

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2017 10:21

The letters in the ST start - under headline 'troubled by JMs trans attack' - with a man (judging by the names) from the 'Gender Research and Education Institute' (you can imagine, and very nasty dig at the end), then one from a female psychotherapist who agrees with JM, one from a bloke who can't understand how her reasonable views could be considered offensive and one from an 'occasional transvestite' saying that having experienced both sides, both genders have privileges.

I haven't heard back from the BBC on my second complaint either. My first complaint was met with a stock response "yes we gave her a warning to stay impartial on controversial issues". My second follow up complaint asked if the BBC now considers facts to be controversial. I await their response with interest.

Elendon · 12/03/2017 10:48

Posted Jazz.

IndominusRex · 12/03/2017 11:14

Jeremy Vine has tweeted the Rachel Johnson article, wonder if he'll get told off by the beeb like Jenni did?
