Oh you know what, we're all "attention seeking" - we're here on MN giving our tuppence, most MNers are on social media too, sharing pics and and witty comments etc.

I have noticed however, that men in the public eye don't get the "attention seeker" nearly as much as women who are doing comparable things

So how about we all stop calling other women "attention seekers"

because actually, there's nothing wrong with attenion seeking anyway…why shouldn't we have some attention and be heard?

hands up I'm an attention seeker, I don't wanna go through live meaning nothing to anyone, I'ld like to be at least in small ways noticed and memorable

"I have noticed however, that men in the public eye don't get the "attention seeker" nearly as much as women who are doing comparable things"

Good point.

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 27/01/2017 21:31

Yep, very good point.

MotherTeresasCat · 19/04/2017 18:09

Well I struggle with being so unsisterly but really, I have come to the conclusion that Jack Monroe is but a painfully self obsessed narcissist.

I follow her on Twitter - always thought she was one of those women I should like, what with her poverty campaigning and general 'right-on-ness'.

But she's awful. Me me me me me me me me. And then some more me. And look at me drawing attention to myself with this photo of me in just my bra. But enough about me. What do you think of me?

She claims membership of just about every marginalised group she can lay her hands on - now claims she was a sex worker at one point. She might have been I suppose, I can't say she wasn't because I don't know. But she now claims to be a transgender woman. Transgender women are biologically male for pitys sake.

I think she is a very confused woman. A very unhealthy woman.

She never said she was a transgender woman. She said she was transgender, and a woman. (No I don't understand that either) she clarified many times that she missed the comma between transgender and woman.

user1487175389 · 19/04/2017 19:27

Thanks Mumsnet. It took a while but she got there in the end.

MotherTeresasCat · 19/04/2017 20:00

Ok apologies. I hadn't read through the entire thread and seen her comma clarifications (or the fact that she'd contributed at all). But if you're transgender, and a woman, then surely you're a transman aren't you?

Anyway, everything else I've said stands. Certainly her claim to have been a sex worker is something she's reiterated on Twitter today. I think she just really lacks self awareness and doesn't realise how utterly self involved she seems, as though she views her life story as this impossibly tragic, romantic tale. Actually many women have shared her experiences and most of us aren't famous, selling shed loads of cook books, and endlessly gazing at our navels in awe at how very special we are.

She almost never tweets about anything other than herself.

PokemonWanker · 19/04/2017 20:08

I like Jack but totally agree with you about her Twitter, Mother. I've followed her for a while and don't remember her tweets always being like this.

That said, it's her account so she can tweet what she likes.

Butterymuffin · 19/04/2017 20:11

Hey Jack. Good to see you here. I don't agree with everything you say but I do with quite a few. You are open to having conversations about difficult issues, which not everyone is. And you clearly love your son very much and he knows it. Happy to share with you the challenging but also wonderful experience of being a woman. Good luck with the future.

MotherTeresasCat · 19/04/2017 20:11

That's true. I'm being unkind, I know. Don't know why it bothers me so much.

MercyMyJewels · 19/04/2017 20:24

She's young and she is honest and she is conflicted. So fucking hard for young women now.

I think she's great and admire her courage

Yes I do like her honesty. It makes a change from the PR run accounts on social media, I'm presuming she could have easily gone down that route after she became well known.

MotherTeresasCat · 19/04/2017 20:39

She's putting herself forward as a candidate for the forthcoming general election now.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/04/2017 21:53

As a Green ?

YogaAndRum · 19/04/2017 21:59

Welcome back Jack!

MotherTeresasCat · 20/04/2017 10:42

I'm not sure for what party. But the civic mindedness I can get behind at least.

aginghippy · 20/04/2017 11:03

It's on the BBC election blog.

Writer, journalist and activist Jack Monroe will stand in the next general election, saying she has "earned [her] political stripes" though life experience.

Mx Munroe has not named a party, but pledges she will "do the best for the most people", with priorities including healthcare, services for people with disabilities, living standards, jobs and decent homes.

TitaniasCloset · 20/04/2017 11:48

Hiya Jack! You have gotten a really hard time of it lately on social media, even on here.

I just wanted to say that I think you are brave and amazing. Please ignore all the negative comments. None of these people know you in RL and some people just love a good bitch about anyone.

Cake cake for you.

Xenophile · 20/04/2017 12:03

I've completely changed my opinion of her since I started reading her twitter feed, I think that whatever she does she gets damned for it, poor kid.

She is a bit self obsessed, but that appears to be youth culture, and she was encouraged to be so by people who loved the blog, which got her out of a really shitty living situation.

She posts stuff that I feel is inadvisable, given that she has so many people who just seem to want to tear her down, but, as long as she has supportive friends, then good luck to her.

DJBaggySmalls · 20/04/2017 13:01

Women who stick their head up above the parapet are going to become a target for hate for one fatuous reason or another.

user1487175389 · 20/04/2017 13:09

Personally, I think we should enter Jack for the title of 'World's Most Beautiful Transwoman'. (if such a contest exists). - See how they like them apples. Grin

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 20/04/2017 14:37

I find her immensely annoying. I saw her on TV banging on about being trans in a short and frustrating debate with Julia Long. Jack was acting like her "masculine" presentation led to people thinking she was a man, whereas to me she looked like a gender confirming, very pretty woman. I can't imagine anyone was ever confused as to her sex.
