13 year old dd accused me of not being a feminist

Dd went to a party last night. She came downstairs dressed in tiny cut off shorts. She has worn these often, with thick tights underneath. Last night she did not have the tights on.
It was cold last night, but also, she was dressed like a 17 year old, not a just turned 13 year old.
My first words, without thinking were ' You aren't going out dressed like that!'

So it got me thinking, I do believe a woman should be able to dress as she wants. But she is not a woman, she is a child.
Where do I draw the line, what age should I let her choose how to dress?
And more importantly, what do I say to her when she wakes up today and is grumpy that I didn't let her wear what she wanted?

No one walks around naked Batteries. Plenty of people wear shorts.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:06

Batteries, do you feel that girls should be taught to cover up in order to prevent rape?

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:08

Women were not thinking sex at all women were thinking young teenager dressing a bit maturer than she should. Girls grow up quick enough these days they have access to the internet see the Karxaahians pouting on Instagram a 13yr old child should not be pouting on the internet or trying to emulate older women when they are children

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:09

Urgh Kardashians sorry.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:09

So should boys also be prevented from emulating men MrsJayy?

My2centsworth · 01/11/2016 21:10

Sparrow rape is caused by rapists. Children should be children not mini adults. Adults are sexual beings. Children are not.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:11

So do shorts make a child into a mini adult, a sexual being 2cents?

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:13

Yea they should be boys.not men . Do you think girls should be emulating women sparrow,

My2centsworth · 01/11/2016 21:13

Do you like child pageants Sparrow

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:14

Do you have teenager s sparrowhawk

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/11/2016 21:14

Sparrow is just using the Socratic method.

So when s/he asks "do you think girls should be taught to cover up in order to prevent rape" what s/he is really saying is "I do not believe girls should be taught to cover up in order to prevent rape."

And I could not agree more.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:16

Who else are they going to emulate MrsJayy? Who will their role models be? Are women such awful role models that we must prevent girls from mimicking us?

No I don't like child pageants 2cents as they are driven by adults?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/11/2016 21:16

Oh sorry. I did not mean to come across so pedantic.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:16

Ignore that last question mark!

My2centsworth · 01/11/2016 21:23

Sparrow was not engaging in debate she was being utterly patronising. There is no assigned Socrates in this board here to educate the rest of us.

She has stopped now and has done very interesting comments to add.

My2centsworth · 01/11/2016 21:23

Done=some

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:31

Of course women are not awful role models. I guess you think it's OK for young girls to explore their sexuality at 13 some of us are not that comfortable with it and try to guide them age appropriate behaviour . I wouldn't want my 13yr old pouting on the internet with cleavage showing just like i wouldn't a 13yr old going out with tiny shorts riding up her back side

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:32

Wearing shorts is not 'exploring sexuality'

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:37

Of course it is

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:39

The OP said her DD has no interest in boys. So in what way is she exploring her sexuality by wearing shorts?

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:40

Girls don't have to be interested in boys to start showing their bodies off

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:41

Is a ten year old in a swimming costume also 'showing her body off'?

My2centsworth · 01/11/2016 21:44

Are thigh high boots in any way sexual? Are anoraks? Are short short mini skirts? Are courdry trousers? Are stockings? Are corsets? Are polo necks?

Do women ever wear any of these clothes in any scenario to attract sexual attention?

If they wear them are they saying it is ok to rape me? Absolutely not, no never, ever. (A rhetorical question)

You are conflating early sexual behaviour and attracting unwanted male gaze/rape.

TheSparrowhawk · 01/11/2016 21:48

Clothes aren't sexual. Behaviour is sexual. A 13 year old girl isn't setting out to attract sexual attention. She may like her legs and be happy to 'showing them off' - that's not a crime.

I'm not conflating anything. Legs are just legs. The only reason to cover them is to keep warm.

MrsJayy · 01/11/2016 21:49

What age should a parent stop guiding their child . Sparrowhawk
