That's good, SomeDyke. Has anyone seen anything from Keir Starmer on the case, BTW, given the work he did previously on prosecuting rape cases?

11122aa · 24/10/2016 17:02

As he is now shadow brexit secretary its unlikely he will comment much in public. Cabinet and shadow cabinet members tend to only comment on their policy areas.

HillaryFTW · 24/10/2016 18:22

Well done those MPs

SomeDyke · 24/10/2016 18:29

The gofundme has just gone over 23K. More messages of support, more funds raised, and more support for a change in the law.

kua · 24/10/2016 22:30

Please could someone share the link.

kua · 24/10/2016 22:32

Sorry, to the gofundme page

Here.

kua · 24/10/2016 22:53

Thanks! Done.

SomeDyke · 26/10/2016 17:20

Seems that Jean who started the gofundme page has had to suspend her twitter account due to abuse.

Meanwhile the fund is past 24k and :

"I had an email from the complainant's family to say they are all overwhelmed by this lovely gesture and she is taking great strength from seeing your lovely messages and they are reading them all in amazement at your kindness. "

Women are kind, so men get abusive....................

FreshwaterSelkie · 26/10/2016 17:24

That's great news about the complainant getting the messages. There are so many people on her side, and it's good that she can see that.

It's less good news about the twitter abuse. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Nearly 25k hoorah!

Queenoftheblues · 26/10/2016 22:15

That's looking good. The threats must have been bad for Jean to do that. She's a tough cookie and I enjoy her tweets and her retorts to the haters.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/10/2016 01:03

I'm slightly disappointed that no one well known has given publicly. It would be nice if someone influential like say JK Rowling or Andrew Neil or Germaine Greer had.

They have little in common other than they are prominent and powerful enough not to have to care about what Evans' idiot supporters say.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 27/10/2016 08:00

I would imagine that some would prefer to support Rape Crisis or Women's Aid rather than give to just one individual in this way.

But I remember reading a very sad interview with Maddy Hill in which she said that when she became an ambassador for Rape Crisis and asked why they didn't have any celebrity supporters, she was told it was because there was felt to be a stigma attached, that it was "dirty".

SomeDyke · 27/10/2016 12:51

"I would imagine that some would prefer to support Rape Crisis or Women's Aid rather than give to just one individual in this way. "
Rather sad if some people think like that.

Except the money is going to be split between the individual and a Rape Crisis Charity (sorry can't quite recall exactly which one!).

Why not do both?

As has been said on the gofundme, it's a very direct way of showing her that she is supported, the messages people leave and the message of support that being a donor gives.

Xenophile · 27/10/2016 13:15

Rape crisis.

Jean has been inundated with 700+ messages of abuse. Some of it is seriously nasty and has been passed on to the police.

If anyone tweets, we (Jean's friends) would really appreciate you retweeting the gofundme if you feel you can. It's obviously making a real impression.

scallopsrgreat · 27/10/2016 13:50

Done!

Queenoftheblues · 27/10/2016 15:10

Will do!

Milklollies · 27/10/2016 15:17

I actually support the victim. I'm a gay man and rape when drunk is still a risk to me. I would be infuriated if a defence barrister brought up my sex history to justify the defendants attack. This case applies to everyone(including me) and I have donated. I also agree about changing the law to make sure those disgusting tactics can't be used. I have nothing but contempt for The rapists supporters. How natural selection hasn't wiped out inferior humans like that - I'll never know.

cadnowyllt · 27/10/2016 15:23

I would be infuriated if a defence barrister brought up my sex history to justify the defendants attack.

That's not what happened.

How natural selection hasn't wiped out inferior humans like that - I'll never know.

maybe you've misunderstood natural selection ?

SomeDyke · 27/10/2016 15:27

"and asked why they didn't have any celebrity supporters, she was told it was because there was felt to be a stigma attached, that it was "dirty"."
Which is terrible.

But my second responses was, the gofundme is great because it is just ordinary women (and a few men). I've been watching for a while, and you can see that most donations are small (only one of 1K, a few at 500, really only a handful above £100). The average, looking at the latest figures, is around £20. So, ordinary women, who all felt the way we did about the result of this verdict and about what happened to this woman. Okay, a celebrity could bung in a few thousand and never notice it, but it's the hundreds of ordinary folk putting in £5, or a few quid and a message, that really count and that are the real message here!

Feeling quite emotional about all this................

SpeakNoWords · 27/10/2016 15:32

I donated, and I'm thrilled at how the total has risen. Jean is a star for organising it. I was totally despondent on the day of the trial verdict, whereas now I feel like there's a tiny ray of light.

scallopsrgreat · 27/10/2016 15:56

It is emotional SomeDyke.

I know what you mean SpeakNoWords.

M0stlyHet · 27/10/2016 16:16

milk - thanks! It's an issue which affects all of us, albeit with differing risks depending on demographic - but the horror of the attack is the same. (And yes, I think the defence barrister bringing up the past sex life was done for the explicit reason of excusing the defendant's behaviour - I know that there are lawyers who claim that this was not the correct interpretation, but I am aware of quite senior practicing lawyers who feel that this is exactly the correct interpretation of what the defence team were up to).

SomeDyke · 27/10/2016 18:17

"I know what you mean SpeakNoWords."

Ditto.
