This lovely person was elected to represent LGBT students. What a stunning and brave example they present.

I'm not moving my line. Bugger that.

I will not purposely use someone's 'old' gender, but I retain the right to use any linguistic gymnastics it requires to not use their new pronouns, so long as I do not use the old ones.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/08/2016 18:01

However being a guy, and wearing womens clothes..is a crossdresser, not trans? I wonder sometimes if some of this recent 'trend' to be trans is people feeling ashamed to admit they like to crossdress

I think being a male cross dresser must be extremely hard except for the few flamboyant types like Grayson Perry, Andrew O'Neill and in his heyday Boy George (bless his little cotton socks)

I recall a thread when I first joined MN which was generally pretty unsympathetic (although to be fair the man in question sounded a nightmare no matter what he was wearing) and other threads not particularly sympathetic. (Except of course, small boys in Disney dresses)

I've also noticed a move towards being far more accommodating and sympathetic to cross dressing men.

HermioneWeasley · 25/08/2016 20:21

horny it is now transphobic to say that a person who is obviously male is a man.

Cross dressing comes under the "trans" umbrella now and questioning that is the same as committing genocide (apparently).

Look at the plaudits heaped on Caitlyn Jenner for coming out as "trans" rather than a fetishiistic cross dresser. As a cross dresser you don't get access to women's spaces, you can't insist that women indulge your delusion that you're a better woman than they are. Be trans - you get awards for your bravery and get to impose yourself on women who don't want you.

I don't know any women who wear denim vests? I mean I'm sure they exist, but I've never met them. And I'm 'in' the metal scene which is, like the only place denim vests are okay outside of 1991.

CancellyMcChequeface · 25/08/2016 21:31

In case anyone on this thread isn't following the discussion in Site Stuff, you might want to check out the Spartacus thread:

Yeah, I'm a Metalhead too, and it's not something you see. I think I remember Lita Ford wearing one in Kerrang circa 1983, but that's about it.

Interestingly, I just got this from the university. It's a bit far for me to travel for a focus group, but in view of this thread and the one that was deleted, if any alumni who are local to Edinburgh are interested in how the university communicates to alumni (or not), maybe you should consider signing up.

Ahh yes...Alex "beard" "women can fix cars too you know" Drummond. Who is "widening the bandwith of what it means to be a woman"

Yes, thanks for that Alex. Women can and do indeed fix cars. We never needed a bloke with a beard who dressed as a woman (who should actually be making videos about widening the bandwith of what it means to be a man, and step off the coat tails of women) to mansplain what it means to be a woman. And women who can fix cars already know they can fix cars, thanks.

GenderCriticalDad · 26/08/2016 16:03

I am Sparticus.

The vicious, nasty scumbag is a man.

Brandnewiggi · 26/08/2016 18:54

Seneca, I followed your link for the alumni thing. (Thanks) On the last page I was asked if my gender was male, female, non-binary or other.
Hmm

StrangeLookingParasite · 27/08/2016 23:26

I've decided to treat trans issues the way I treat religion. If someone says they believe in God or souls, or transubstantiation, I will be polite to them. I will accept that these are their genuine beliefs. I will accord them the respect I would give anyone whose beliefs differed from mine. If they announced they had found religion I would be genuinely happy for them and hope it made their life richer and more fulfilling. If however, they then started to proselytize, or demand that I had to share their beliefs or go to hell, or be shunned publicly for failing to profess my adherence to their faith, I would lose all respect for them. And I would not see why I had to be polite about their views when they were so very obviously not prepared to be polite about mine.

I completely agree with this.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/08/2016 11:25

Very well said, Selkie. That analogy covers a lot of how I see it. There's no need to be rude about someone's beliefs, however absurd I think them, but as soon as it becomes clear that I'm being forced to comply with them then blunt dissent may be appropriate I do not respect many, probably any, transgender positions because they make no sense, logically, factually and in my life experience. For example, the gender identity business assumes we all have one. I don't and I've now read numerous posts from other women saying the same.

Elendon · 30/08/2016 20:12

At last a man in a dress and a wig is called out for being just that.

posted too bloody soon!

If they turn out to ID as trans

WankingMonkey · 30/08/2016 20:31

Bet if any prison sentence is given when he is found, it will be asked to take into account that said obvious man in a dress is actually a woman.

Its fucking pathetic that anyone is expected to play along with this.

Elendon · 30/08/2016 20:44

Armed robbery is taken seriously. I doubt very much he will get away with the trans card. It's traumatic for those who are threatened.

WankingMonkey · 30/08/2016 20:51

If its allowed in cases of rape...and child offenses....

cadnowyllt · 30/08/2016 21:11

Transsexualism is successful mitigation in rape sentencing ? You have examples of such cases ?

baringan · 30/08/2016 21:13

I would dissuade my dd from applying to Edinburgh because of Ada Wells, he is a truly nasty human being.

I know he prefers being called they, I prefer not to be called cuntscum, so we are even.

TallulahTheTiger · 30/08/2016 21:16

seneca brand also Edinburgher Alum- still in Scotland, I may consider this- if they allow me to bring baby DC!

OlennasWimple · 30/08/2016 21:19

MNHQ have just posted on the "Spartacus" thread, BTW...

Elendon · 30/08/2016 21:23

You cannot change sex, it is a physical impossibility. You can change gender. Gender being a social construct.

WankingMonkey · 30/08/2016 21:49

WankingMonkey · 30/08/2016 21:54

Sorry that posted before I was ready and that is not what I meant lol

My point wasn't really about mitigation, but the general knowledge that womens prisons are 'easier' than male ones.
There was a case linked in the other thread about someone who raped as a man, now identifies as a woman and the judge was lenient and confused as they said there wasn't a rehabilition course for female rape offenders so he didn't know waht to do...pretty sure the course was just dropped entirely based on the offender 'identifying' as a woman now
