This lovely person was elected to represent LGBT students. What a stunning and brave example they present.

its gone again
oddly enough, given the deletion message that cropped up I feel the need to point out I wasn't interested in discussing pronouns and transition
I was interested in discussing the acceptability of misogynistic and anti-Semitic hate speech in a situation where the speaker was perceived to have suffer a variety of intersectional oppressions
I was interested in discussing the difficulty of meeting the needs of LGBT and every other letter shoved under the umbrella of inclusivity when their needs and stances may be in direct opposition to each other

but no, twas all derailed about pronouns , personal offences and misgendering, again

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 24/08/2016 23:02

I'm not happy either. Second time today, so well done (first was mr rapist cocklodger getting his own post deleted by hq "for privacy")

AskBasil · 24/08/2016 23:02

If it's just been pulled because of derailing MN, why not just delete the derailing posts?

Why pull the whole thread?

Surely that's an invitation for MRA's and other assorted trolls, to saunter over here and de-rail anything they want as much as they can, in order to get you to pull the thread?

Is that what you're aiming for?

WTAF? What on earth is going on here? Has the Guardian been on to you or something? Hmm

ThatStewie · 24/08/2016 23:03

Ada is no different than any number of transactivists as seen in TERF is a Slur websitete. It's an absolute fucking disgrace that Ada's been allowed to do so for so long. However, I also expect that someone has had a word with Edinburgh University's legal team about the lawsuit they had opened themselves up to allowing Ada to harass and abuse students under the guise of EUSA. Cuts to legal aid will impact students ability to access legal redress but there comes a point when this level of misogynistic abuse is dealt with - Nottingham Polices recognition of misogyny as a hate crime certainly opens up possibilities.

PinkyOfPie · 24/08/2016 23:04

Hopefully I won't get banned for this but sorry I don't see the issue with misgendering. On a forum I will call a female a female. And I will call a male a male because that's what they are. I wouldn't be so rude to do it to their face if I met them, because I'm not impolite. I'm certainly not pandering to the narcissism that is "non binary" by having to remember a whole new set of words, or use English grammar incorrectly, just for that one special snowflake and their demands.

Unless MNHQ is happy that I now wish to be addressed as Empress rather than she or her, and bans anyone who doesn't call me Empress?

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 24/08/2016 23:04

'every other letter shoved under the umbrella of inclusivity when their needs and stances may be in direct opposition to each other'
Yy!

Snowshimmer · 24/08/2016 23:04

Yes LRD god forbiiiid

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2016 23:05

Has Edinburgh released a statement yet? I know they said they were going to...

PinkyOfPie · 24/08/2016 23:05

Yes Ask why not let discussion continue and ban derailers? Pandering to the wrong group. Expected better of MN Angry

ThatStewie · 24/08/2016 23:06

And my stance on pronouns remains the same: act like an asshole and I'll treat you like one.

ClaudetteWyms · 24/08/2016 23:08

I reported the trolling on that thread, but have not had a reply. The troll is very clever in choosing words, quite hard to report!

There was no "deliberate misgendering" that I could see - posters used Ada's preferred pronoun. There was certainly no misgendering at all after the thread was re-instated. It's bullshit.

venusinscorpio · 24/08/2016 23:08

They really don't get it, do they? If you think women should just STFU and pretend untrue things are true and say that we're all the same to save trans people's feelings you are allowing this minority group to comprehensively shit all over women's rights and boundaries and to do a very effective gaslighting number on us. This thread should be in Relationships.

IfTheCapFitsWearIt · 24/08/2016 23:10

WTF! I've just come back on. What the hell happened? There was a bun fight about they? Fuck was I deleted too then?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 24/08/2016 23:10

Right, no idea if others saw it the same way as me, but in case, I wrote in Site Stuff. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2716007-Are-we-allowed-to-talk-about-women-and-or-lesbians?

ThatStewie · 24/08/2016 23:11

This appears to be Edinburgh Uni's public statement:

"Dignity and Respect Statement
The University sets out clear expectations of consideration for others in social media use.

The University is committed to building and maintaining a positive culture across campus by celebrating difference, challenging prejudice and ensuring fairness. Our Dignity and Respect Policy, which applies to all members of our community, sets out our clear expectations of consideration for others.

Thoughtless or ill-informed words and actions – particularly when magnified through the lens of social media – can have all manner of repercussions, sometimes causing great distress. This is wholly unacceptable. Fortunately such incidents are rare in our student and staff community of over 45,000 people.

We all need to remain mindful of the public nature of social media and the fact that questionable, privately expressed views often do not remain private. The University will always respond promptly and sensitively to formal complaints, and where appropriate we will take disciplinary action as set out in the relevant disciplinary policy."

Obviously they can't possibly be expected to take responsibility for allowing a student to behave like a shitstain. Angry

LyndaNotLinda · 24/08/2016 23:11

Wow - MN are bloody quick with the trigger finger when they want to be. Shame it doesn't apply to misogyny or disablism or racism ...

paddypants13 · 24/08/2016 23:12

Well, it's the same issue over and over again, women's voices silenced for daring to discuss misogyny and basic biology because we might hurt someone's feelings.

After all, our opinions and feelings don't fucking matter.

I have no problem with trans people in everyday life, I don't care how you dress or whether you call yourself Bob or Daisy. I do care about women's rights being eroded by misogynists who have hijacked trans issues and are using them as a stick to beat biological women with.

This thread should be in Relationships.

-Sad chuckle-

OlennasWimple · 24/08/2016 23:26

I'm presuming that the other thread got pulled after it was reinstated because of the troll hunting and finger pointing (which was out of order IMHO - report away to MNHQ, but don't do it on the thread)

Buunychops · 24/08/2016 23:28

So in really simple terms can someone/anyone explain to me if a person states that their preferred pronoun is 'they' and you respect that and use that pronoun; but another person states that this is 'othering' who's right?

To me using the pronoun preferred by the person is the 'right' thing, but if someone else sees using they as a pronoun is misgendering well how can you talk about well anything????

Like others I'll defend anyone's right to wear what they want etc but it's getting to the point where you can't say anything for fear of misgendering. And I hate writing this because it sounds so like the crap people I've actively campaigned against say.

You know the I'm not… but. Or the classic 'Oh you can't say anything now …pc gone mad'

I'm not trying to be disengenious (sp?) I really don't know.

brasty · 24/08/2016 23:33

I care that awful hate speech can be said against women, lesbians and jewish students by an elected representative, and nothing happens until they tweet saying the police should be killed.
Misogyny and anti semitism is on the increase.

MatildaOfTuscany · 24/08/2016 23:36

I've decided to treat trans issues the way I treat religion. If someone says they believe in God or souls, or transubstantiation, I will be polite to them. I will accept that these are their genuine beliefs. I will accord them the respect I would give anyone whose beliefs differed from mine. If they announced they had found religion I would be genuinely happy for them and hope it made their life richer and more fulfilling.

If however, they then started to proselytize, or demand that I had to share their beliefs or go to hell, or be shunned publicly for failing to profess my adherence to their faith, I would lose all respect for them. And I would not see why I had to be polite about their views when they were so very obviously not prepared to be polite about mine.

brasty · 24/08/2016 23:37

Yes Adas preferred pronoun is they. That is not misgendering.

But why is misgendering a bigger crime that hate speech against women, lesbians and jewish people?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2016 23:39

I'm not sure that it is a bigger crime, but I think many would argue that it is, in itself, hate speech.
