i never post here but I'm watching Germaine Greer on newsnight
Crazy, the woman is not allowed to discuss feminist issues without being forced to discuss transgender issues
Disclaimer- I really like GG
Am I reading this correctly? Why does she have to fight for a different groups issues

OP posts:

Yes! Loads of people.

And then various feminists and other people wrote a letter complaining about her and Julie Bindel being no platformed and were harassed online by trans activists.

It was a massive big deal and extensively discussed on here. Some of the people who signed even came on to MN and discussed the problems of trans activism.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/10/2015 17:32

I agree nothing is going to shut GG up and thank fuck for that

ask people to name a living feminist and most would probably name her first her work is amazing no one has to agree with all that she has said but no one can deny the changes that she has helped to come about and the awareness of how women are silenced

its the same old thing a woman speaks about women/girls issues and is questioned about other issues, she replies well actually I just want to talk about women/girls issues no no what about .......

Ok I'll link

What a shame Germaine Greer's proposed lecture about feminism has become yet another debate about men.

But how very predictable.

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 17:35

Then why don't you just say that rather than asking leading questions? You're not Socrates.

The same people who complain about no platforming over Trans issues complained about nomplatforming of Kate S.

Peter Tatchell on the letter about both:

here

limitedperiodonly · 24/10/2015 17:42

As a journalist I would never 'no platform' people.

It used to be called 'denying them the oxygen of publicity.'

Those tactics allow people to claim they are being oppressed, now more than ever.

I would ask that the journalist interviewing them was briefed and could test their views. It's not a journalist's job to make an argument.

limitedperiodonly · 24/10/2015 17:47

I have this sneaking suspicion that there might be people on here who are unhappy with Germaine Greer being no platformed because of her views on trans people - but are more than happy to see other people no platformed because they express views they don't agree with.

I'm sure you're right about some people on this thread but I've just explained that with me, and presumably others, you aren't.

I'm unhappy with Germaine Greer being no platformed because I only agree with no platform ing of those who incite hatred, and Greer is not doing that. And also because...she's GERMAINE GREER! The students should feel privileged to be able to listen to her speak.

No it isn't surprising. It was a feminist officer that defended no platforming of Julie Bindel at Manchester recently.

Trans activists consistently challenge feminists over trans issues rather than other groups. It is pretty much impossible to go into any feminist space now without trans activists wanting it to be about them. Hence to be elected as a women's officer you have to be very into trans activism or you would stand little chance of election.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 24/10/2015 18:21

It was also a 'feminist' society that no platformed Kate Smurthwaite for her views on prostituted women at Goldsmiths. University 'feminist' societies don't really seem to be anymore. They seem to be more about centering men. Poor men, no one centres them enough. /sarcasm

SoftDriftedSnow · 24/10/2015 18:27

It is an absolute privilege for any woman to hear Dr Greer speak - there aren't many women speaking publicly and graphically about the reality of being a women and to hear or read someone being so beautifully outspoken is refreshing. Like Dworkin, she's a treasure.

One might not agree with everything she says, however she needs to be heard, because God knows the self proclaimed feminists like the one trying to get her no platformed are doing the square root of fuck all.

I am fed up to the back teeth of trans stuff invading Feminism. Greer must wonder why on earth she spent so much of her energy on women, when so many are unappreciative and have failed to pick up the baton. What a waste. I'm always surprised that she is relatively quiet, actually. I would be livid if I were her. Actually, I am livid.

QueenLaBeefah · 24/10/2015 18:32

Completely agree with being fed up to the back teeth at feminists endlessly being forced to discuss trans issues. It is so bloody boring.

I would love it if Mumsnet had a trans section and then the feminist section wouldn't be bombarded with this crap.

howtorebuild · 24/10/2015 18:32

I think you are right, she must be feeling rubbish.

I would like many more feminist issues platforms. For example there are studies showing Women having a heart attack or in pain are treated far more slowly than Men with the same symptoms or treated as if they have a primary mental health condition instead, wtf is that all about?

Elendon · 24/10/2015 18:37

Ego, move on from the women's officer seeking to no platform. That has been explained.

Personally, I hate that Ukip have a political voice, even hate that someone like George Osborne is in such a position of power. As for the likes of Fathers 4 Justice!!!!! But they all have a legitimate right to speak.

I've been into Gerry Adams constituency office in Dundalk! (In a tourist capacity) - there are gorgeous painting supply shops along the street.

Germaine Greer rocks!

whatdoIget · 24/10/2015 18:37

QueenLaBeefah - brilliant idea! A trans section, like the Christmas section. And if trans stuff was posted in feminism it could be moved and I could hide trans

FreshwaterSelkie · 24/10/2015 18:46

Teh Patriarchy must be laughing its socks off. I'm not surprised Greer is fed up and can't be bothered with it all, she must be wondering what the fuck actually happened to feminism.

FreshwaterSelkie · 24/10/2015 18:47

I know I am.

grimbletart · 24/10/2015 18:49

I would love it if Mumsnet had a trans section and then the feminist section wouldn't be bombarded with this crap

Yes.

It is shameful that GG is being no-platformed for expressing a personal opinion. She isn't say transitioning is wrong, she isn't saying we shouldn't use the personal pronouns a transgender wishes, she is merely giving a personal opinion.

But there has always been a section of students/academics through the decades that believe it's their way or the highway, often with all the arrogance of youth who think they have uncovered some eternal truth that the rest of the population is ignorant of.
