i never post here but I'm watching Germaine Greer on newsnight
Crazy, the woman is not allowed to discuss feminist issues without being forced to discuss transgender issues
Disclaimer- I really like GG
Am I reading this correctly? Why does she have to fight for a different groups issues

Come on Cardiff students, what's the matter with you?!

If you disagree with her, you should turn up and debate it in person, and have the chance to let others hear your views. Simply refusing to listen to the other side is counter-productive. It will create resentment against your position, rather than strengthening it.

If what you have to say is worth saying, then be prepared to defend it. And if it cannot stand up to some robust debate, then perhaps you should rethink it!

And if you turn up and she completely fails to mention trans people, because she is there to talk about feminism, well, what's the problem exactly?!

Ego
"It's also not trans people or trans allies posting in FWR about trans issues"

I cannot believe you just posted that. Or perhaps it isn't you I see on thread after thread talking about trans issues.

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 19:01

Exactly.

Nobody said you shouldn't join in, but in your comment, you said posting, not "starting threads".

Not that this is really relevant to the discussion.

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 19:09

You are not just joining a debate though. You are consistently trying to undermine the opinions of women talking about sex, gender and misogyny.

I would love to discuss concepts of sex and gender in particular at length, without it being about the feelings of trans people. It is the central topic of feminism.

This thread is about no platforming within a University. The person who has been threatened with censorship is Germaine Greer.

limitedperiodonly · 24/10/2015 19:18

It is surprising that a women's officer would seek to no platform such a prominent feminist icon.

I don't find it the least bit surprising.

Firstly because some women subscribe to the view that MTF people are women and secondly because these days you don't have to be a born female to become a women's officer/advocate/spokesperson for women.

  1. I don't
  2. I am

I have no idea about the status of the person who is acting as Cardiff University's Women's Officer. All I would say is that she doesn't speak for me.

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 19:19

I have no idea what that means or what debate you are talking about.

So that's it then is it? All feminism is now all about trans. I feel really sad about that tbh.

Also, the redefinition of the word "woman" to include anyone who feels like a woman is a feminist issue

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 19:50

Well with groups like the BNP you are not dealing with some sort of academic argument.

We felt that often they would create situations to get publicity. They stood for deporting our black/Asian/ whatever readership. They stoked fear and resentment in our white readership.

Giving them the BNP the privilege of interviewing them makes them seem more important than they are. Why use our employees and distribution networks to spread their ideas? This is why that BNP person should never have appeared on QT.

They are not UKIP. I would happily interview any UKIP candidate and show them up.

I guess the point is that sometimes no platforming is justified when you have people promoting ideologies which are harmful to the general population, which wish harm to our society and that you have evidence that this harm is occurring.

Glamour is shit is it not? Never pick up those mags.

In a way it is appropriate that a magazine which is funded from advertisments celebrates Jenner and declares them a better woman than biological women themselves (including those who have spent their lives helping girls to get an education and escape poverty.

But those aren't Woman Of The Year because they have short hair and are stout and might even have ethnic features).

A trans person whose "femininity" is based on and constructed from by paid for, expensive, external looks (the hair and the boobs and the dresses) is an advertisers wet dream.

It corresponds with the shit mags message, that you can "buy" womanhood (ideally from the advertisers in Glamour).

Possibly, in my opinion, the feminist issue. What are women, if men can choose to be women? Who will do the work?

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 20:58

Trans women are a tiny number of people. Females will still do most of the world's work.

hedgehogsdontbite · 24/10/2015 21:19

In the Newsnight interview she said that women who share her opinion won't speak out because they're scared of the backlash. This attempt to no platform her demonstrates that perfectly.

I wonder if she feels let down by younger feminists. That thought makes me sad.

She has had her spats with younger women who are also feminists and intellectuals. I'd say that sometimes those rows were prompted by envy or spite.

But on the whole I admire her.

What makes you feel sad?
