Can men be feminists?

Inspired by another thread!

I've just read the claim that men can never really be feminists. I disagree. Would be fascinated, and grateful, to read others' thoughts on this.

OP posts:

Or if black people aren't allowed to formally join the KKK, could black people become "KKK allies"?

AnyFucker · 07/12/2014 16:24

I think you have your analogy the wrong way round, silly person

StrumpersPlunkett · 07/12/2014 16:27

*I'd say that in any scenario at all any patient should have the absolute right to refuse treatment or care by a HCP for any reason at all and have that refusal honoured.

With care, it is generally always possible to provide an alternative option and cater for the request made.

However, when it comes to treatment it is never going to be possible to always 'cater for' those requests. For specialist treatment and procedures there may not be an equivalently qualified /expert woman. The patient still has the choice though. They have the choice to (a) refuse treatment, (b) accept treatment from the person they wouldn't normally want to provide it, or (c) go for an alternative treatment that can be provided by a person they are happy with.

What they can't do is require a HCP to perform a treatment or procedure that they do not feel qualified to carry out*

my Mil was a midwife for 35 years (now retired) and her colleague was sued by a lady who had been raped and now several years later she was due to give birth. She insisted that she only be treated by female staff.
However she also insisted on having a natural birth (a planned section could have allowed her to have female only team).
On the day the labour did not progress well and the baby had shoulder dystocia and she was rushed to theatre. she was awarded £25,000 for the trauma of having a male consultant save her and her baby's life. As you may guess from my tone it isn't a decision I agree with.

right anyway back to OP..
I do wholeheartedly believe men can be feminists in the form that 80% of feminists are. ie working for the equality of women in all area's of life.

I think men can be feminists.
I also think that, sadly, feminist men have far more influence over other men than women do. And it's men that need to change.

Can men be feminists?

Depends on what you mean by the word feminism.

Reading the preceding pages it seems as if people have as many definitions of the word"Feminism" as economists have predictions of the future direction of the economy.

YonicScrewdriver · 09/12/2014 18:20

Welcome to MN, kell.

It's true there are various opinions on the thread, which is good, as we are all individuals. What is your opinion?

FloraFox · 09/12/2014 19:26

I wonder if kell thinks he's being very clever negating all of feminism with his razor sharp observation that feminists are not Borg.
