Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

Oh, I know, Jeanne, we had realised in the interview that the salary offered was well below what I would consider accepting, so I didn't think I was going to get the job I actually interviewed for. But the interviewer seemed keen to try to find me a better position, and there wasn't even any mention of that in the rejection email - I was hoping for something along the lines of "please accept this even bigger and better position for loads of money cos that's just how awesome you are!". Or the slightly more realistic "while you weren't suitable for that position, we can see you fitting in well in another role. Unfortunately none are available but we'll certainly be in touch when one comes up". But this was just a "thanks for coming but the other guy got it. Good luck for the future". No door left open at all. Sad

We're relocating partly so there would be lots of jobs for me. But there are really only 4 employers in the city, I've been turned down after interview by two and didn't even get a response to my application by the third. I've got an application in with the fourth and final, but if they don't give me a job I'm rather stuck!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/11/2014 23:04

Ah, I see.

It sounds depressing, but you will get there, right? Surely these companies interview and assess people over and over?

YonicScrewdriver · 20/11/2014 23:58

Annie, just because the letter didn't say it, doesn't mean it wasn't true. HR probably wrote the letter...

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 21/11/2014 00:08

Nah, interview guy wrote it.

But enough about me. It occurs to me we haven't fired our cannon lately! So I propose we wheel it out.

"Even though rapists are to blame for attacking women, if the women would only take sensible precautions like... " BOOM!

Plus a celebratory BOOM for the arrival of Junior Feminist Violet.

The rape apology is strong with them. I don't know wether to be sad that they don't realise how stupid they're being or angry that, should the absolute worst happen to their DDs, they won't feel comfortable speaking to them.

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 21/11/2014 00:26

BOOM!

And once more for "People have a responsibility to keep themselves safe"

Thanks to Annie and anyone else feeling in need of some tlc.

Exactly what Buffy said!

yes agree with buffy - HR would probably be wary of that sort of comment so rejection has to be very standard in format

agree that there is a need for a journal of stuff that didn't work. though not sure pharma would play ball there (not the only research area that would benefit from negative results of course)

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/11/2014 07:51

I agree - a journal of "we tried this and it didn't work and we tried that and it didn't work" would be actually really useful. And that would let other people know that life is not as straightforward as they tell you in school. Especially in the mathematical sciences where people always say "but isn't there just a right and wrong answer"...

PetulaGordino · 21/11/2014 07:54

there are methodology journals (or sort-of-journals - they aren't always in standard format), but they tend to publish tweaks and improvements to current methodologies IME

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/11/2014 07:57

In my area I've only ever seen mention of things that didn't work if they actually finally found a way to make things work, and often only the Big Names do that. But for every result that work there must be quite a few that didn't...

PetulaGordino · 21/11/2014 07:59

yy definitely

Zazzles007 · 21/11/2014 08:24

Hello all, its early evening where I am, so I have gotten stuck into the sparkling moscato here (Wine, oh how I've missed you! Wink).

Is there any company out there in which it isn't a shit fight to work in? This week, the fucking incompetent men that I work with have pushed and pushed to get a certain job that they want me to do, done. And I have realised that my manager, who I thought was lovely, is in reality, a sexist pig. I complained to him that the job these incompetent men wanted me to do was worth about $130-150K/year, when the biggest products in my portfolio are worth between $1-10m per year. That lead to me coining the rather memorable phrase "I don't get out of bed for less than $1m a year in sales."

The worst thing was when I was explaining how worthless the proposed 'job' was, I got the head-tilty, waffly, man-splainy bullshit that men use to back each other up. FML (fuck my life) Angry

PuffinsAreFicticious · 21/11/2014 09:26

Have you seen this thread about whether MNHQ should support BPAS in calling for buffer zones around abortion/women's health clinics?

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/11/2014 09:57

Zazzles I love my job and where I work, but even with all these nice people (mostly men) around me I've just realised (how thick can one be!) that I can almost tick all the boxes in the list of how professional women are treated. It makes me so angry. I haven't had it out with some people yet because I'm scared I'll cry with anger. Angry

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/11/2014 09:58

Thanks puffin for the link.

trevortrevorslattery · 21/11/2014 10:10

Upto I hope my doors would open somewhere sunny. I am sick of the flipping DARKNESS. Still, only a month till the shortest day Grin.

Thanks for that link about BPAS. I hope MN do support the campaign.

WRT work Flowers Zazzles and upto..I also love my job and the 2 people I work for, and all the people I work with.

However all the other women apart from one are admin staff. There are only 2 female professional staff and the other will be retiring soon. That kind of tells a tale on its own.

I'm not looking forward to my direct bosses retiring/leaving - one of the directors who'd be likely to become my boss is great and supportive on an individual level, but then comes out with comments like "here come the Witches of Eastwick" when, for ONCE, an all-female team from one of our suppliers comes in for a meeting. AARRRAAGGHHHHHHH.

Oh and Annie I meant Sad not Hmm about your interview- I was on my phone and pressed the wrong icon!

hoppy DS2 bought this book last year at the grand old age of 8 and was greatly amused.

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/11/2014 10:18

I want to shake all these so-called nice men and tell them that they are all shit underneath and they don't even know it. Angry
